1.
GAS for 2010 would be a Conklin AC50 string, a thing of piezo-only loveliness :brow:
Surely a Carvin, not a Conklin? Personally, I seem quite fixated on an 8 string guitar. Can I play it? Barely. Can I justify it? Absolutely not. Can I afford it? Nope. Do I want one anyway? Totally. Disclaimer- I would get a long scale one so its practically a bass
2.
A somewhat related question. In my (now on a break) covers band everything was 1/2 step down to help the singer hit some of the high bits. All fine, no issues with that. What would you recommend setting up differently on a bass that I would be using tuned this way? Different strings? Action? anything else. I haven't made any changes, and it seems fine, but just wondering.....
Totally depends on how the bass feels to you. I ended up favouring slightly heavier strings, but that was pretty much the only change- as ever though, YMMV.
3. Just had a listen to your band on Myspace mate- cracking stuff- looking forward to seeing you next week in Glasgow with FF! Have a bump on me.
4.
In case it's not clear in the photos, the bridge is straight, perpendicular to the body on the lower side - it doesn't look twisted or bent. Is that what you mean?
To me it looks like the top of the bridge is starting to lean towards the floor more than it should- the pics make it look like the lower side is significantly straighter. I've attached an awesomely Painted version to try and show what I mean. I could be wrong though, and even if it is it's a routine job for a luthier to replace.
5. The bridge looks like it's warping slightly to me- not really an issue yet but be aware it may need replaced if it warps too far.
6. I used to when I played a 4 string in a band with guitars in D. Got a 5 string and never looked back- I don't see the attraction and it makes it a pain in the ass to play with other people.
7. Status advertise half rounds, flats and tape wound double ball end strings on their website, and the metal ones are SS
8. Definitely! All you need to do is think of a way to make it airtight.
9. IME Jennifer's approach is excellent, although you can also adapt it by having both feet up on a rung of the stool, which gives you a bit more flexibility with heights etc. Either is far superior to the traditional one leg up on the stool position IMO, which I found gave me intense back pains after any length of time playing.
10.
Jeez, it was only a little quip, a phrase, people are getting pissed off with me because of it. Not one person has screeched at me because they are offended by my Helmand Province reference. SORRY TO ALL GLASWEGIANS! I'll be up there in a couple of months, I'll take a look. If you look at my profile in May and see "Last seen 14th April", you'll know what's happened.
We'll be waiting...
11.
surely people have better things to do with their time..........good grief.
Because getting a load of folk together to talk bass for a day is otherwise so productive...
12. The Boss website would suggest not. AFAIK the GT-10/10b were the first Boss multis with a basic looper.
13. It's a Conklin Groove Tools Bill Dickens signature model, which is made in the far east but is meant to be of better quality than the ones you see on eBay from Tennessee, Galveston and the like. I haven't been able to compare them personally though.
14. But that's not what the thread is about. Read the OP. I assume the same logic would apply to requests for notated transcriptions- IE, it should be somewhere else. Personally it doesn't bother me either way but its a bit irritating to see the original question devolve into tab vs notation bickering.
15. I use light Elixirs set on my 7 string which I tune BEADGBE- so that's .040-095 or 100 for the standard four, a .032 for the high B and an Elixir guitar string which looks like it must be a .024 for the high E. I thought it was lighter than that but that's the lightest wound single string I can see. Also a .125 for the low B if anyone's interested. Hope that helps. edited to add- that's on a 34" scale BTW. Also, keep some old string handy if you use the guitar string route- I had to thread on a bass ball end to get the top string to stay in the bridge.
16.
Wow,you sound like a complete @rse. Just because some people don't have the time or inclinations to learn songs by ear or read the dots doesn't mean you can think your superior. Oh, and just because you can, its never going to put feeling into you lifeless sterile playing
Wow, talk about the pot calling the kettle black The point being made is, you could argue that tab is neither theory nor technique, so why's it in the theory and technique section? There's absolutely no need to start slagging off other people's playing, especially since he's not said the words you're putting in his mouth. Like the title says, its not a commentary on the relative merits of tab and notation. Chill.
17. To me it looks like you're putting too much pressure on the thumb- try keeping it arched rather than letting it collapse. That should help you ease up the tension it looks like you're putting on it, and allow you to do the "thumb off the back of the neck" trick Doddy was talking about. As he said, you shouldn't be gripping with your thumb. Hope that helps.
18.
Why not? Jimmy Page uses a bow on his Les Paul
Because it sounds like ass? Yes, I have tried it!
19.
Blimey! /thread + lots squared!
Steve DiGiorgio is another excellent metal fretless player, who favours the brighter Jaco-style sound. Sean Malone is The Bomb, however. Video probably not safe for work- some language. Fretless can work in metal- I disagree about it being a radically different instrument from fretted. It will take more practice than fretted but it opens up possibilities for you. What kind of metal bass sound do you go for, clean and punchy or do you prefer the clanky, grinding sound? edit- video doesn't seem to want to embed- link!
20. The only reason I would buy a bass these days is because it can do something my current basses can't- I can't be doing with the constant buying and selling so many folk get up to. Now that I have my extended range needs/wants covered there would have to be something pretty special to tempt me again.
21. My girlfriend knocked a bass over at uni- took the neck off. Fortunately I wasn't there, I'd have probably had a heart attack. If its a clean break it shouldn't be too big a job to get put right.
22. It was posted on the official NIN website- I think it's legit
23. I'd love a 5 string version with a reverse headstock. Metaaal!
24. Try it sitting down, or hold the bass in place with your right hand. It is an exercise, its not terribly practical to play like that all the time but it should be possible.
