The Bassmute is here! I put it on earlier and have set it up just right now to give subtle to full muting. It sounds superb, I think I might be using it more than I thought. It is well made, I will post a review of it later. probably a bit expensive for what it is to be honest (~80 euros) but it does its job extremely well...

The Bass Mute looks intersting. In my last band we used to do several songs where I did a "sequencer bass" effect with filters and timed delays. To get the best out of the delay sound I had to palm-mute everything which meant I couldn't play as hard as I'd have liked to still get the percussion to the start of the notes. A device like that would have been invaluable. Of course none of my main fretted basses have sufficient room between the bridge and the pup to fit one, so it would end up being an excuse to buy yet another instrument...

Yeah I think you would have to buy something high end for it to be worth it, too. Apparently they work best on basses over a grand. Ah well, needs must, eh?!

Funnily enough I was thinking the same regarding synths - some of the patches I have used on Hip-hop samples have required muting to bring out the individual notes, so this will no doubt help tighten those up no end. I will do some samples of the various bits and bobs tomorrow for your delectation. If you mute in the most hard setting you cannot hear my crappy playing, which is even better!!

BTW i put the Marleaux steel strings back on the fretless yesterday, with the john east it is like a whole new bass. Simply superb MWAH!! again, samples on the way!!!

Cheers!

According to the BassMute website I need a flat-fronted bass with at least 10.5 string clearance and gap between the bridge and the pup. Of the 3 fretted basses I have that I'd consider fitting this to none of them meet the requirements. The Traben Phoenix 5 has 12mm gap between the pup and the G saddle. One the Overwater Original 2 if the pup was any closer to the bridge it would be touching it. The Gus G3 has sufficient gap, but the body is contoured and the actual amount of body available before the recess for the bridge is only 10mm... Still it'll give me an excuse to look at fretted basses again.

Thats a shame. I souldn't worry TOO much about the height issue because the saddles clamp on to the central bar and you could easily point them upwards a little to reach. If the bass is not massively curved you could substitute the thin tape for thicker tape to counteract the bend a little.. but I think it might be a bit of a gamble yes. Buy another bass, defo.

Ok here are some quick clips, i just did these this morning so they are not fantastic, and a little bit quiet, but stick some headphones on and you should be ok...

These are some other sounds I have at my disposoal - These were recorded 'properly' so the volume is a little better.

As usual, excuse the sh*te playing etc. I hope these give you some idea! All were done through the bass pod XT pro - the Bacchus with the Alembic pre and Eden 4x10, the Fretless with an SM500 and EA 1x12, the Vigier with an Eden WT300 direct and the SVT setting is an SVT into a bassman cabinet. All these settings took literally ages to get just right. The pod is just amazing, you can get anything you want from it if you spend the time, which I really enjoy doing!

Thanks Bob! I loved the look of that P but it didn't 'feel' quite right. I can't quite put my finger on it, but the tension seemed quite high and I could never get the action perfect. If its pink basses you want, keep an eye on this: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=335459

Hi Sibob,

Actually I found ordering from Ishibashi the most pleasant and trouble free experience I have ever had over the internet. I literally emailed them saying which model I was after and rceived back a lovely reply with some info on the bass and a secure link over which to pay. They managed to get it from the store in japan to the UK in under 24 hours. I was given a tracking number and the link to the tracking page which let me know every step of the process. I fully reccomend them and will definitely buy from them again.

The Bacchus stuff in particular is fantastic. It oozes quality and has the exact sound I like in a jazz, a carbon copy of the bass sound in Dr. John's New Orleans soul music. :)

 • 4 weeks later...

Hi Stewart,

Cheers for the message. It seems 'bass histories' are the flavour of the month at the moment!

The bassmuts is on my Jazz now, and I really like it. You can see it on the last page, but since then I have made some modifications. Firstly, the tape holding it on was not strong enough as it kind of peeled off during the hot weather spell we had a couple of weeks ago. Since then I have used my usual plack plastic double tape and it is solid. I have also trimmed the foam saddles slightly as they were snagging on my gigbag. As you can see in the pic below, they are now much shorter but sound exactly the same.

The mute is great, i use it a lot on the middle setting - it really cops that Steely Dan bass vibe from Two against nature or Donald Fagen's Kamiriad album.

Here is another pic - final one, I promise:

In other news, I think I have finally tracked down my next purchase. here is a sneaky pic, not a very good one at that - you can just about make out the wood covered pickups and some details of the bass. More info to follow!

Cheers
