We all talk about comfortable weight, but what weight is acceptable for a 5 string without giving back ache? All my 4 s are a very nice lowish weight. Using it for tonight's gig above my other (bigger budget) basses for no other reason than I really like it! Should be relatively easy to find one to try out too. I had a Ray5 at 10.5lb that balanced great so didn't feel too bad for a little un like me. On the other hand I had a DJ5 at the same weight that sempt neck heavy and I couldn't get on with it. Also we are all different with weight tolerance, I sold my Sandberg basic 5 (which was about 9.5-10lb and felt quite light to me) to 'Beneath it all' who subsequently found it too heavy and sold it on. Looking at what you play (Rays 9 to 9.5lb?) I'd have thought you should be ok to that weight just make sure they don't neck dive which 5er's can be more prone to due to more tuners/wood. Might be worth talking to Shuker/Overwater who could take your weight requirements into account (for info my Overwater 4 is only just over 7lbs so it can be done on a standard sized bass - as opposed to my girly Streamline) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Musicman20 Posted November 13, 2009 Author Share Posted November 13, 2009 Its not so much a worry if its around 10lbs....but I did own a USA Fender Deluxe a while back, the weight let it down, (for me anyway). I got back ache playing it for more than an hour....which i've never had with other basses. My SUB clocks in at around 11lbs and you can really feel it when you pick it up, but on the strap it just sits perfectly. Conversely both my P basses are super light, but have neck dive which makes them uncomfortable on my shoulder after a while. Also a nice wide strap padded strap will help with heavier basses.
