The_D
Does anyone have much experience with 4ohm cabs? I am looking for a 2x10 cab but my Ashdown head unit likes to run off 4ohms so that is what I have been looking for. Trouble is most of the 10's I have found are rated at 8ohms and I have only really found the Peavey models that go to 4. Does anyone know of other companies that have 4 ohm 10's? I will be looking for a second hand cab as I find you get better deals going used but if I am relying on finding a Peavey cab alone then I may be waiting for a while Edited September 3, 2007 by The_D

Pretty good performing cabs for the money. Even new, they have a very attractive rrp. As for other cabs out there, there are a few companies who make 4 ohm cabs, EBS for starters, Aguilar, Eden (+Nemesis), SWR, Peavey (as you say) - in fact, a lot of the top end companied manufacture them. If you want to keep costs down though, I would defo recommend the Yammy...
The_D
It looks like the Yammy cabs are discontinued. Definitely will keep an eye out for them though. Does anyone know of a decent online store for used gear other than Epray? I am prepared to travel but it would be nice to have a wider search net if you follow me. alexclaber
You'll probably find a single 2x10" too quiet to handle all of your gigs unless you're in much quieter situations than me! Therefore it's wisest to get an 8 ohm cab to allow you to add another matching cab for louder environments. If you're in quieter situations then there's little point chasing the extra decibel or two that a 4 ohm cab will draw from the amp compared to an 8 ohm cab. Dr.Dave
If you're going down the used route you could buy a 8ohm 2x10 cab and replace the drivers with 2 8ohm 10s then ebay the discarded ones. Work out a lot cheaper than a high end 4ohm cab.
deksawyer
I'll be selling a Yamaha 4ohm 2x10 cab very soon. Never gigged - never even left the house. Lightweight, well built and sounds surprisingly good. Get in touch if you're interested. And I'm in Fife also!!! D. The_D
Think I might need to clarify. I currently use a Marshall 412 400w cab. The 210 will be to help cut through a little better used at the same time. The Ashdown amp I have is the reduced special offer superfly sound control have on sale at the moment. Every review I have read on them say they are much more efficient running through 4ohm cabs so I really am not looking for an 8ohm one. Besides the amp itself suggests 4ohms and I have had two offered for sale since this thread was opened so I dont think it will end up being as hard as I first thought

backwater
I bought two Yamaha BBT210s cabs a few weeks ago from Sound Control in Edinburgh - might be worth giving them a shout to see if they have any more. Sibob
How can an amp be more efficient running through 1 cab at 4 ohms, if you're running 2 cabs at 8ohms, therefore running the amp down to 4ohms, then its exactly the same resistance and power output. It would also sound louder with two cabs as you're pushing more air through more speakers. For example if you were running your amp with one 4ohm 2x10 and the same amp with two 8ohm 2x10's, i would expect the amps efficiency to be exactly the same!! But i would expect the larger rig to 'sound' louder Not that i know ANYTHING about amps really lol Si

bass_ferret
The Ashdown Superfly has a stereo power stage that puts out 2x250watts into 4 ohms. So to get the most out of it with 2 cabs they have to be 4 ohms.
Sibob
So how is one 4ohm 2x10 gonna help? won't that mean he'll just be putting out 250watts, needs another 4ohm cab to get the full 500 Or can u run it bridged? LeftySteve
The Superfly channels cannot be bridged..... frustratingly enough Other than that though I am very pleased with mine... also used a practice/rehearsal amp here. As someone else mentioned I am also considering getting a 2x10 cab and replacing the drivers with 4ohm ones and feeding each from one channel of the Superfly... should be a very compact and useable 500w rig I reckon! D.[/quote] It most certainly is my good man The whole reason I am looking for another cab is to add clarity and get the most from my Superfly. I will still be using the Marshall as well as the 2x10. The whole thing has kinda hit a snag though cause my bank is playing silly buggers at the moment. Hopefully have it sorted by the end of the month though. I have gigged with just the Marshall and it is definitely loud enough. It just seems to get muddy in the mix a bit and no amount of playing with the eq can bring it to exactly what I was after. Its the old story though that I am the only one who notices haha! I am by no means a gear snob but I am a tone snob .
dub
If you get hold of two good 2x10s (like epifani or eden) and stack them vertically, you'll get a more focused powerful sound than other speaker combinations. It's much more efficient that a 410 and easier to carry. If you get a chance, give it a try. Once you've heard the sound. I reckon you might want to sell the Marshall and get two 2x10s. LeftySteve
Hi Dub Interesting! Just to be clear, are you saying to stack the 2x10's in an upright configuration, i.e. the drivers would be 4 high and 1 wide in total? Or to stack them 2x2 as you would normally see?
