Not only does he have 4 hipshot D-tuners he also has a bridge that slams into any tune too...Takes him a good 30 mins to tune but... He's untouchable! And for a fretless there's a LOT of zing in those notes! I don't know where to start with him he's...untouchable...I mean, imagine a bass that can go into any tuning at any time! Most of us have a hard time constructing a solo masterpiece in ONE tuning! Imagine the headache here! My mind would blow...but his doesn't. I wonder, what a bassists with HUGE MM influence sounds like...can anyone get close to his playing? Wooten can't touch this...end of! Would have loved to have seen him with Michael Hedges if they had been able to continue working together. Must search youtube for them, hadn't thought of that before. Oscar South Posted June 20, 2009 Share Posted June 20, 2009 I consider Michael the spiritual successor to Jaco, not literally from a stylistic perspective or even because he was taught by and toured with him but simply because of how he approaches and expands the potential of modern bass playing. He brought three basses, as he had to use all of themmanring's music for "my three moons", and he eventually told us that it took 2 hours to put a new set of strings on the three of them. this said, he's the man. I've said it before but I'll say it again, how many of us have seen guys (or ourselves) mangin to rip Wooten's technical slappity poppity double thumping at least to a certian degree? I know I've seen tonnes. I have never seen anyone even attempt a Manring thing, not with the detuning too, that is just above and beyond what normal people can achieve, even with a lot of work. The closest I've ever got is Girl With... on my myspace page, and its not even close (standard tuning and no harmonics for a start ) in fact its super lame compared to MM, and it took me years to get close to right! It was very much inspired by listening to Drastic Measures, but is clearly not in the same league. Plus his fretless tone is the absolute definition of perfection for what he does, its so ethereal. I agree about the Jaco tip, he was taught by Jaco, and in interview said they mainly spent time looking at how music works, solos work, compositions work etc, not strictly bass related all, its brilliant to watch how far this genius can take our instrument. Also interesting to hear the Zon VB. Just had a look at the Zon website and yes they are expensive, but a lot less than a hyperbass. Also note he is from the UK - is he on BC? Obviously its not always the case but whenever I see stuff like 'technical, no feeling, elavator music' etc. with no justification thats how it comes across to me, and it kind of irks me when every single thread related to solo bass goes down the exact same road with these 'one shot' "I don't like solo bass." posts. Personally I think that Manrings feel and emotion in his playing is incredible, I get more feeling out of his melodies than I do from 95/100 'professional' vocalists. Everyones entitled to their opinion, but a little elaboration would make it a lot more interresting. I find this sort of playing mildly entertaining, even interesting, I even have a Stu Hamm CD somewhere! As far as feeling and emotion goes that all sits with being in the 'groove' within a structured piece of music. I love the bass but the fact that it is partially percussive I dont think some of the stuff these guys play is relevant to the instrument. Check out Equilibre by David Cullen for some beautiful 'supportive' fretless playing and 'The idiot king' by Attention defict for some mad band playing.
