Clarky Posted Friday at 11:10 Posted Friday at 11:10 (edited) New Old Joy Division Bass Day. Just received this 1977 (?) Hondo Ricken-faker, the model made famous by Peter Hook in Joy Division days (before he switched to Shergold Marathon 6 string and Yamaha basses). A few screws missing and signs of age but plays/sounds great and, importantly for me, weighs just 8.2 pounds. Sits nicely next to my Shergold Marathon bass, the Joy Division nerd that I am. Shaggy Posted Friday at 12:57 Posted Friday at 12:57 Good score! I was lucky enough to see Joy Division live (Eric's Liverpool Dec '79) and am ashamed to say I can't remember what bass PH was playing...... Quote

Clarky Posted Friday at 13:56 Author Posted Friday at 13:56 If it was August 1979 in Eric's then it was the Hondo (see pics in link) Quote

(a very dark, very sweaty one...) I was right at the front of the stage but don't recognise the back of my head. Amazing gig; the energy of the band and the raw angst coming off Ian Curtis was absolutely electrifying. Nice to see the old members notice too: OMD were pretty much the "house band" at the Uni Students Union back then - Echo & the Bunnymen, Wah Heat! and The Teardrop Explodes were frequently there too. Great days. Funnily enough was clearing out some stuff the other day and found my old membership card. Sorry for going off topic - I've never personally had great experiences with Hondos, but this is clearly a pretty special one to have. 4 Quote
Skybone Posted Friday at 18:45 Posted Friday at 18:45 With Doreen's signature too. Too young for Eric's, but a regular at it's successor, Planet X. 1 Quote
Clarky Posted yesterday at 12:03 Author Posted yesterday at 12:03 To complete the nerd/fanboi collection I bought these two Master Effects pedals - Transmission (apes the EQ of Hooky's early Yamaha basses) and Golden Ratio (chorus based on original Clone Theory circuit; little bit noisier than I would ideally wish but sounds authentic) 2 Quote

It gets close enough to Hooky's sound but just as a chorus pedal I really like the crossover function where you can set the frequency that the effect starts, so have a really hard chorusy top end but leave the low end relatively clean, keeps it from getting too muddy. Good to see you're a fellow JD nerd. I've got all sorts of Hooky related/inspired bass stuff. I got a him to sign my BBPH and Eastwood Hooky Pro a couple of years ago. 1 Quote
