dave74200 Posted June 5 Posted June 5 (edited) I hate changing my strings and have consequently had the same ones on both my basses for about two years. I dislike the zingy bright sound new strings give and am wondering if I should just go to flatwounds? Any advice? Edited June 5 by dave74200 Typo Quote
Hellzero Posted June 5 Posted June 5 Buy some Rotosound RS66, they will be bright for a few days and will have the same tone for at least a decade afterwards. 2 Quote
Lozz196 Posted June 5 Posted June 5 Try Elixirs, due to the coating brand new their rounds sound like other brands do after a couple of weeks use, and they stay like that for about a year. Quote

I don't exactly hate changing my strings but can seldom be arsed (or want to spend the money) to - I think two of mine have eight year old strings on at the moment, although I did put d'addario NYXL's for this reason last time I did change them... 1 Quote
Jamieboy Posted June 6 Posted June 6 I regrettably have an aversion to the feel of old strings, to me they don't have that responsiveness against the fingers. I'm aware this is a bit OCD as I don't actually mind the duller tone. The frequency of little parcels of bass strings arriving through the post has become a "talking point" with my other half! 2 Quote

I like DR Sunbeams because they seem to lose the initial zing quickly and then stay in that 'ideal place' for a long time. I like flats, various types, but none feel like a substitute for older rounds, they just do their own thing. Having said that, Ernie Ball Cobalt flats are probably the most round-like flatwound string I've tried. Quote

chris_b Posted Monday at 09:38 Posted Monday at 09:38 I also prefer not to have the new string sound. A set of D'Addario NYXL's have been on my Jazz bass for the last 6 years. Still sound pretty good to me, nice and mellow. I tried flats and that wasn't the right sound. 1 Quote
brickers Posted Tuesday at 19:20 Posted Tuesday at 19:20 I love Ernie Ball cobalt flats. They tend to be more like a roundwound in sound that many other flats, but they don't have that zing to start and mellow nicely. i'm told they stay at that point for a long time. only issue people complain about is rusting, though it's purely cosmetic, and if you use something fastfret it'll prevent it. 1 Quote
miles'tone Posted Tuesday at 19:33 Posted Tuesday at 19:33 Rub some moisturiser on your hands and before the cream is fully absorbed, rub your hands over your strings. That'll get you there. Quote
