dannybuoy Posted March 15 Posted March 15 You can get the V to sound close to the MkII with the LPF on and the highs/lows boosted. I find the V better at the transparent low gain thing, since you can bypass the LPF and open up the top end more. But I really like the MkII at high gain, and the V doesn’t react in the same way that I find really pleasing with the MkII cranked. Quote

tayste_2000 Posted March 20 Posted March 20 So mine arrived from @fretmeister the other day and I’ve played through it quite a bit. I think it’s very different from the beta. I don’t think I’d easily be able to get one to sound like the other. Overall with all the gigs, studio and buying and selling of gear I’ve done the past few weeks I’m a bit fatigued. Off the bat it’s a very nice pedal, I was able to dial in what I’d consider a very amp like tone very quickly. Running the gain from 9 o clock or lower is really pleasing. At higher gain settings it feels far more like an always on preamp than an on/off overdrive. I got some fabulous sounds running it into a 6x10 ir. So currently, I don’t know where this sits in my setup. It’s doesn’t stack particularly nicely with the mk1, but the cream pie makes either of them sound phenomenal as does the element with the right ir/eq settings but it’s all rauchier than how I’m running my main rig with the punchline. Between the punchline and the element, I don’t know when I’d use it, vs the combo of the cream pie and mk1 just works great slamming either of them as if they were an amp. Its definitely nicer out of the box than the quad cortex though 😅 3 Quote

I'd mentioned this on another thread somewhere that after borrowing yours I was so impressed that I picked one up for myself. I'd dialled yours in for that on the edge of breakup sound and it was exactly what I was looking for. However, the one I bought wouldn't go as low gain even with the gain/drive control backed right off, I couldn't get it clean enough so I ended up moving it on. I recently managed to grab an immaculate mk2 off the forum recently and for my tastes it does exactly what I'm looking for, it adds a real pleasing fattnes to the bass in the mix with the band, not an obviously overdriven sound, just bigger and juicer 💦. Think a B15 kinda vibe. Some people have complained about the lack of high end but to me that's part of its appeal and what helps it slot into the mix where I want the bass to be, sitting under the other instruments and supporting them, not clanking over the top of them like modern drives do. 2 Quote

Firstly stacked with the MK1 into it, it’s awesome but I’m finding the MK1 is the most amp like (in feel and how it reacts) pedal I own. It’s basically a dirty compressor for me currently The MkV will go more or less completely clean so I’ve definitely got the one most suited to what I want to do. The problem is probably more it’s sat on a board with a Punchline, Capo and the MK1. The Mk1 just has some real mojo I’m loving and the Punchline and Capo are easier to dial in the eq than the MkV. So who knows, it’s for sale and trade at the moment but only for the right deal, I could see this happily sitting on a small board/pedal riser ala @Chadu25 😅 The Diamond comp is really tempting for said small board Quote

As far as I understand it (as in what I read online somewhere), the mk1 and mk2 are the same circuit, it's just the mk2 has the switch that supposedly bypasses the drive section - what they call pre-amp mode. On mine at least you can still get a pleasing very low gain drive with the gain cranked when it's in pre-amp mode so I don't think it's completely bypassed. I tried the Ge version alongside the mk2 a couple of years ago and, IMO, it wasn't a patch on the mk2, the Ge was higher gain and pretty harsh sounding and had none of the warmth and character of the mk2. Best to think of it as a Beta in name only. 1 Quote

I have no idea but I always heard the mk2 didn’t have the baked in bass boost of the MK1 I categorically can not get the V to sound identical to the mk1, they’re close, similar ballpark, definitely based on the same topology but can’t get them identical. That said as long as I don’t turn the mk1 on the V is great, just the mk1 is easier to get the sound I love out of it. Got a few more low gain drives to work through anyway. They’ll probably all stay as it’s all far more fun than octaves, filters and other wacky stuff. Quote
