Not really comparable but I knew virtually nothing about my Father for 50 years until my wife tracked him down. Turns out he’d played the tea chest bass in a skiffle band.

You say that, but that sounds like another beguiling true life story. Feel free to share more if you would like to - did you get to meet and spend time with your old man in the end?

It really is, isn't it! I found myself needing to get to the end to find out what happened and the bass player angle just added to it! 

I was concerned it might be a Fred Lennon scenario but actually it's worked out well.  He lives in Australia but we go on holiday together every year and Skype every weekend.  My Mum used to go to The Cavern regularly and I always joked that my Dad could be McCartney.  Subsequently, I've found out that my Dad's band played on the opening night of The Cavern.

Incredible story, although I can't  help thinking that a jazz bass player would have sorted it all out long ago.
