Jimryan Posted January 16, 2016 Share Posted January 16, 2016 Afternoon all, A friend of mine seems to keep finding old basses she bought years ago and forgot about. The last one was a Westone Thunder and asked me to tidy it up and give it a set-up and she was very pleased with it. She found another yesterday and has asked if I'd give it a once over but has asked if it is worth it. Along with the text she sent me a picture of the bass and I haven't a clue what it is, apparently there's no markings hinting towards a maker, but does anyone recognise this... BottomE Posted January 18, 2016 Share Posted January 18, 2016 Hi James. Good place to have a look would be at the general state of the neck - does the Truss rod work, for example. If yes, you still have to source a pickup and do a re-wire.The A string, when using the fret dots as a guide, doesn't seem to be straight and zooming in on the picture it looks like someone has replaced the original bridge (which may explain the A String issue). My gut feeling says its probably not worth it. The thing is you never really know until you do the work and plug it in, though i'd be surprised if the outcome were worth the effort in this case. Or even MIJ (although I think this one is). There were various different versions of this design seemingly from several different factories sold through the 70s & early 80s, later ones being Korean-made. If it has "Steel Adjustable Neck" on the neckplate, that would confirm it as a Matsumoku, otherwise there's no real way of IDing or dating it, apart from in the broadest terms.
