Oh the shame!

Recommended Posts

A little while ago I was looking for something online, and found an old video I did with one of my bands. In truth I was hoping that this had disappeared into the ether by now, but it was posted on youTube by the band's second guitarist a few years ago (presumably after a failed blackmail attempt on another member of the band  ). Recorded originally on VHS, and by my calculation around 18 years old. Sync is spectacularly bad at most points in the video, mainly because the original DAT master was used alongside some video footage of us miming it from a cassette machine that was playing back a smidge too fast...

Thankfully I'm mature enough not to be too bothered about it, but I thought I'd share it all the same:

Anybody else feeling (wo)man enough to put up similar material for ridicule?

Yes, there exists some ridiculous post-punk stuff from 1979 which found its way onto YouTube.
So this is how the 19-year-old me played bass. I like to think I've improved since then... ;)

I note (1) an abiding fondness for moody monochrome semi-profiles, and (2) a bit of a Tom Verlaine influence?

I gave it a watch. Has a certain charm. Nothing to be embarrassed about.

I sort of like this. A touch to much strange wailing. Cool all the same.

Thing is, for the last year or so I've been in a band with the drummer, the singer and the guitarist from back then. The singer and drummer I hadn't seen for 25 years, so it's a bit of a weird one to be honest. The strange wailer doesn't do quite so much strange wailing now. ;)

You would have expected us all to have improved a bit over the intervening 36 years, wouldn't you? But we haven't.

Thank you. Nothing overly shameful about this, imho... I've seen a lot worse. ;)

Actually the original recording (done at Far Heath Studios, which will be familiar to many Northants bands) was pretty good - though you wouldn't know it from this version! I seem to recall feeling quite good about the solo; done in a single take with no drop-ins to a chorus of whoops, yells and general raucousness from the other band members, and (more importantly) an approving nod from the engineer.

This got added to YouTube by a former band member - I still quite like this track tbh!

Note - I was a guitard/vocalist in this band!

Another gold Patrick Eggle Berlin if I'm not mistaken... in the same thread... Spooky! :swoon: Mine was a '93 Plus - which I still have; battered & bruised from the years of onstage abuse but still alive. ( Yours looks like a Pro to me...) We seem to be trending towards a 'Patrick Eggles used in vids' thread I think.

Can't see too much wrong with the vid though... sync looks very slightly off here & there, but nowhere near as bad as mine.

Nice!

You know, I have never played in a band that had a decent video.

It's '96 Berlin Pro Elite - http://basschat.co.u...-1386277030.jpg

Mullets ahoy! And the keys player needs shooting, but good song otherwise! ;)
That'll be Benny The Bass then! Mine is just a huge pony tail! I'd always thought the keys were a tad 'busy' too ;)

The track has certainly aged better than the vid - the jury is out on the vocalist!
