Hey guys.

Just spent my hard won moolah.

Heres a teaser.

What could this be?

Heres the giveaway shot. Answers on a postcard please

Damage porn :)

It's not the nicest example i have ever seen, but it was damn cheap and had the maple fingerboard i liked. Plus it has Bartolini electronics. I am not a huge fan of Red personally. What pickguard would go well with red?

More pics when the bass has been guessed and when i get the bass.

Rob.

Not sure, I have had a suggestion of black from kev. And white from you.
I have no idea :)

It was hard deciding to be honest, First i wanted a Deluxe P, Then a Deluxe J, A Custom warmoth inbetween that. And then decided to go with the sound i allways wanted (but not neccesarily the look) And get a Ray.

I am not a fan of the MM aesthetic, But the sound cant be beat!
I knew what it was from the first pic of the neck . Looks like early/mid 90's Birdseye/Flamed maple to me.
Hehe, :)

I actually dated it as a March 2001 made bass from the serial number.

Though from the look i would say 90's.

hmm, black might look good, try getting a load of similar pictures of the same bass in different colours and with different pickguards, (like the photos on musicians friend, they're all the same size and roughly the same angle) and shop a black/white guard onto a red body and see how it looks. I've done it before to see how my SUB would look with a maple neck :)
Also if i were you i'd try and find an SR5 pickup, might take a while but won't cost you much when one does come up, it will make it sound so much better.
I'd go for the reddest tort or pearl guard I could find to match the body colour. I dunno, I just like the matching thing.
How does the Bart sound?
Good question, Its only just been shipped!

I am leaning towards white pearliod.

I wonder what barts sound like. I'll probably end up trying to get an original replacement, or something thats as similar to the original pickup as possible. Suggestions?

Rob.

Been trying to get away from it recently. I need more substance over style!

Plus my backs been killing me recently and neck dive really sucks.

I think Sterling Ball once said in an interview that putting aftermarket pickups in a EBMM instrument is like "putting a Toyota engine in a Ferrari" or something along those lines. :)

Red+Black could look cool.

I had a Bartolini MMC in a Stingray about 10 years ago. It sounded nice and warm and fat but it was too polite and didnt sound like a Stingray should (to my ears). It was replaced with one of the Ducan basslines replacement ones..cant remember whether it was alnico or ceramic - they do both.... anyway it sounded much more like a Ray again

I'd go white pearloid or black with red/maple. it looks great as it is now imo

sounds like a good idea, but rather than just searching on the ernie ball ste you can use the build a bass section, and change the pickguard colours.

EDIT: just been on the ernie ball site, it looks as though the build a bass bits gone. i liked that :) it was good fun.
