Perhaps you could enquire as to why he hasn't replied to me since 26th May 2014 regarding a job I paid a deposit for on 21st October 2013?! Si

That's none of my business. He's a mate, I'm not his business manager.

However, I do have his mobile number if that would be helpful. PM me if you would like it.

it was my understanding that he was having respiratory issues and working with basses and accessories was not helpful to that. Several times in 2013 my build was delayed to ill health and his advice that this was so, did coincide with him going very quiet on the forum. He still delivered pretty much as promised, without even taking that ill-health into account so he always seemed pretty honourable to me. He must be really quite unwell.

It was more of a rhetorical question to make a point, I have his address, email address and number and ignores them all (so far anyway)
But thank-you anyway :)

I've had many dealings with Howard over the years and he certainly isn't the sort of guy who'd rip you off. He often did work for virtually cost price, and the level of expertise, as well as support in terms of advice and experience that came along with every repair or build made each even better value. In short I strongly suspect that the current situation is serious and/or unavoidable, and that perhaps it's not really appropriate to keep this type of thread open if it's simply an opportunity for folks to moan and speculate (other threads relating to bass builders have been closed for less after all, mentioning no names). If people are posting here to wish Howard well and a speedy recovery, I'm of course all for it staying open.

Look forward to seeing you back on BC soon Doc

Chris

I've had nothing but greatness from Uncle Horrid, great comms and great work. Unerringly helpful too. But I've only had custom designed pickguards from him, not a whole bass or big work. I just hope he's ok and in good health.

I've had both and he was awesome

Why shouldn't people be allowed to moan and speculate if Howard's taken money from them over a year ago & ignored all communication since? He can't be so ill if he's out & about can he, certainly not so ill that he can't respond to the many people he owes money to.
I know many here hold him in high regard but he's also upset a few & they should have a voice too.

The OP has asked a question as to the whereabouts of The Bass Doc. What is clear is that at this present moment his whereabouts on this forum are unknown. I'm not going to enter into speculation as to the reasons for his absence. However I think that at this present time it would seem to me that The Doc is not taking new commissions (although this could change).

There is work going on behind the scenes to move things forward with members who have outstanding work. To the best of my knowledge all members who have sent items, or are waiting for items are involved in this conversation. If you are not involved, please contact me.

The Doc may or may not be in a position to defend his situation, but with respect to his long standing excellent reputation I'm going to close this thread and I'd appreciate it if other similar threads were not started.

Once we know, we'll know, then we'll all know.

  • 4 weeks later...

The purpose of this thread is to raise awareness on Basschat that Bassdoc has orders outstanding with our members, and is no longer responding to contact from the people involved, or friends of his who have tried to help.

If you're affected, or you've been able to make contact with him, by all means post your experience here. However, please stick to facts, and refrain from posting speculation etc. We will remove posts that, in our opinion, don't add to the discussion.

Bassdoc has previously been a very well-respected and well-liked member of the Basschat community, and we all want this to be resolved as quickly as possible.

Well said Shaun & if Howard sees this - all the best to him - I'm sure he's had a rough time, hope he's recovering.

I'm not affected but looking forward to his return, it's good to know where to go for a 1st class job when you need it B)

Remember that Precision loom you made for me John and sent directly to Howard, probably Nov/Dec last year?
Still haven't seen that project completed, nor seen any of the parts or deposit returned to me.
No contact from Howard since 26th May 2014, despite gigging as recently as November (according to his bands Facebook page).

I think we need to be careful with that one. To be fair, the Stax Brothers (Howard's band) have never been what you might call regular performers. Playing the odd gig because you feel commited to a band and don't want to let them down (yes, I am aware of the irony in that statement!) is not quite the same as being out three nights a week with a big-paying function band.

The socialising thing seems to be mostly anecdotal and based on posts on Facebook.

The whole thing has me feeling deeply uncomfortable and while I sympathise with those members who are owed money and/or services, the lack of communication with Howard means that none of us know what kind of a place he is in currently.

Still, a couple of PMs or posts from him and a lot of this speculation would go away.

I've amended my wording.
I think we're all aware Howard has had a rough time recently, I'm simply interested in him making contact so we can sort this all out, which will hopefully help him as well.

Soon hopefully

Cheers
Si
