Markbass NY122 vs Bergantino CN212 & Vanderkley 212MNT - any experience?

Hey folks, just wondered if anyone has had any experience of the Markbass cab, and also either the Berg or Vanderkley? Just interested to know how the Markbass cab compares soundwise to these "boutique" cabs. It's a bit smaller and cheaper which is good, but not if it's at the expense of a decent sound! I guess one of my main concerns is that it's rear ported rather than front ported like the other two, so I don't know if it'll be a bit more variable in different rooms (although I suppose you should be able to sort it out with the eq).

You will find the Vanderkley cabs have quite a flat response and cope well with eq, they sound brighter to my ears than the Cn 212 which is quite big down low(but controlled) and quite present through the mids. The Markbass cabs never sounded that clear to my ears, certainly not as good as their heads!
As with any cab it depends on what source you are powering it with and what your tone goals are.

Got chance to try out some Vanderkley cabs the other week and I thought they were awesome. Really wide-open, flat and fast response.

Depends on what money you'd be prepared to spend. The Berg cabs are more refined, and Jim has golden ears in designing a bass cab sound. However, you may well prefer the NX2 or the NY212 in terms of sound/form factor/price.

I don't know much about the Vanderkley...so I can't comment.

In order:

CN212
NX212
NY212

I'd also try the HD cabs from Berg.

I would own a CN212 if I didn't pay the bargain price for a new MIA Genz NX2.

I've had a Berg CN212 for the last 6 months and I've gotta say it's spectacular. I've owned and played through an awful lot of cabs in the past and this is easily the best cab I've used.

As with the other alternatives, I've not compared them so maybe a trip to Bass Direct to see for yourself. In that price bracket, there's not really a "best", more a "best for you".

Agreed with Musicman20 though, the NX2 is a fantastic deal for the price.

I think the Berg would be my choice. It really is an outstanding cab and can cope with almost any situation.

I've used the other MB212 (called the Club I think) and I thought it was nice and surprisingly loud. Pretty big and heavy though. The NY has the compression horn which moves it up a notch from the piezo equipped 1x12 NY.

I've not played through a Vanderkley but I heard one live and it sounded a bit 'harsh' to me. Could have been anything though, amp, PA, player technique etc.

I use the front ported version of that Markbass. The club600f32. Have you considered one of these? Not sure how readily available they are, as they have just been discontinued. I love it, it's clean and clear with my LMIII, handles EQ well and is very transparent with a good tweeter. Not to mention, it is beautifully built, absolutely perfect fit and finish.
Edit: the one Molan, above, is referring to is this one. It is pretty chunky due to the ports, 26kg on my scales too. And is a bit awkward getting through a tight doorway. The reassessed handles on either end are very good though. All in all, I can live with it being a bit chunkier than certain other cabs as in every other way it is perfect for what I want. There are pics towards the end of the 'show us your rig' and 'Markbass porn' threads, if you want to see it with my amp and P bass in context.

It will, just, fit on the front seat of a BMW 3 Series Coupe - I agreed to deliver one once and managed to squeeze it in :)

I've had chance to try the Bergantino and 2x vanderkley 112s, and to my ears the vanderkleys just pipped it. Flat and wide open, with a very fast response. The Berg was awesome too though (and I think it's a little more compact than the vanderkley 212mnt)!

I have already ordered a Barefaced BB2 a little while ago, so we'll see how they compares when it arrives! :D

Bloody good effort! Got mine in the boot of a MK1 Focus seats up - and now in the back of a new KA with the seats down.
