So, I’m thinking of getting one of the following Fender Jazz Bass models but I have no experience of trying either one out and will probably have to buy before I try online if I decide to take the plunge. Has anybody else on here got any experience of these basses and any feedback they can provide?

I like the look of that 75 personally... although I thought the thumb rest had moved to the other side of the strings by 75.... I may well be wrong!

Whatever it is though it looks lovely....

yeah Im going that way too but Im not overkeen on the headstock... Wonder what the play difference is like?

I guess unless you have the chance to try them both out it's impossible to tell what they play like.... Its an interesting looking bass though. I've not seen one like that before, is it MIJ?

Thats an example one I've posted a picture of but its a ltd edition US Reissue (Although there are new MIJ ones around). Like you say you never know for 100% until you try one!

I like the '75 although it fits the profile of a custom colour late 60's/early 70's Jazz a lot more. I'd be interested to know if the bridge pickup was 70's position too, if not it's a really late 60's looking Jazz. Still really nice though!

I think you are right. Its got more in common with a late 60's model then a 70's. Hopefully someone that has one will pop up on here with more info!

Both those pictures in the O.P look like '70's Jazz Basses to me . I'm a little confused as to how a 64 Jazz Bass relic would have block markers.

Anyhow, regarding the difference between the two basses, a lot depends on how faithful Fender have been to the originals. Ostensibly at least, the 75 Jazz would have a slightly chunkier neck profile than the '64, and the positioning if the rear pickup closer to the bridge will give the'75 a significantly tighter and more agressive tone. The pickups on the75 could also be wound a little differently ( that is if Fender have been mindful of how the original model would have been ) with ceramic wire instead of standard copper.

There are a whole host of other differences that there could be , such as the CS 64 is likely to have a nitro finish whereas a '75 Jazz would have a polyester coat, but it is totally hit and miss which details Fender will have been accurate to. If certain things are important to you, I would recommend doing a bit more research before deciding , but the CS'64 is far more likely to be faithful to the original specs , generally speaking.

Yeah I'm not sure about either of the pics.
'64 clay dots as said above.
'75 reissue I think they have 70s pickup spacing, but 4 bolt neck and heel truss-rod adjustment (not bullet) I'm not sure on the neck profile of these. the necks went quite chunky some time ion the late 60s / early 70s, then went thinner again.

Mine is a '74 4-bolt and it is like a baseball bat, but I'd imagine the reissue probably has the more standard, thinner profile.

D'oh, typed a bit slowly ther :)

Your sig says you're in London. Can you really not try before you buy?

The first one is discontinued although I suppose I could have a hunt round in the non Internet shops

Not what I meant, mate. Harness the raw, unfettered power of Basschat!

There must be several hundred Basschatters sitting a tube-ride away from you, maybe thousands.

Someone will have one for you to try. You just need to ask about a bit ...

I see, Good idea! Thanks.

I have a 75RI and it is a great jazz. Very thin neck and the microtilt (3 bolt) works very well.

I have had a few 60s esque jazzes and wanted the 75 as the maple boarded tone is more to my taste.

It is my second one and is very light. My previous one was too heavy and had neck dive. They both sound fantastic though with the stock pickups.

I would buy second hand and try first on the strap to make sure it's comfy.

They are out of production and have been replaced by the 74ri. These have a chunkier neck profile.

Great basses!

I know nothing about the 64RI but I have an American Vintage 75 reissue with ash body and rosewood fretboard, plus 70s position bridge pickup. It also has the 3 bolt neck, which is a nice feature and works perfectly.

The neck is maybe the best neck I've played - slim with a beautiful profile. The pearl block markers and bound neck are lovely to look at and are flawless.

The sound is bright but meaty, honky on the bridge pickup and deep on the neck pickup. Backing off the tone gives an even chunkier sound.

Easily my favourite jazz bass.

Frank.

Hello Clint, sorry to but in but I noticed you had had a look at my profile. I guessed it maight be because I have a FSR 2002 Candy Apple Red, matching headstock , with ashtrays,75 jazz RI for sale on Bass market UK. It may go up on here yet (I am fully paid up for adverts). I am going to attempt to attach a bit from Talkbass, plus some poor photos of mine to help with your research. I am sad to admit that since you put up photos of the 64 in Sea Foam, I am bessoted with the colours of that custom shop jazz, so may put a bit more effort into selling this and my Status.
Good luck with what you decide and hope this helps,
cheers,
Karl.
EDIT, sorry, this is the Factory Special Run, American bass, spec in following link.
