Plampers Posted June 11, 2013 Share Posted June 11, 2013 Hi all, Well basically, my bro in law has let me have his old bass guitar (something I have always wanted to try) so I am going to try and learn some stuff. There is no pressure on myself, I'm only doing it so I can jam and bring a smile to my face haha. I am completely new to music, I literally will be starting from scratch, so I am trying to get the basics together. Sadly lessons are out of the question for me as I live on a fairly tough budget so I was hoping someone could recommend some good books to self teach? I have had a look at sme vids on you tube but nothing is comprehensive enough and I want some theory behind it. I have seen Bass Guitar for dummies and read its pretty good, but wondering if there is any gems you guys can suggest? As a recent convert to BC, I'm sure you'll find this crowd friendly, supportive and slightly nuts, just like all bass players Like yourself, I've never had lessons on guitar or bass but I've watched and listened to a lot of very talented players and never been afraid to ask "How do you do that?". You don't say what types of music you are interested in but whatever it is, find some tracks with good bass lines and listen to them carefully and try to understand how they are put together. I use Riffster to slow down or change keys of tracks I am learning. If you are on a tight budget, there is Riffster Lite which has most of the features of the full version and is free. I'm personally not a great fan of "How to .." books. I prefer to watch the fingers moving and hear the sounds they produce. I'm going to check out the suggestions made above to see if any of them match justinguitar.com for the quality of free on-line guitar tutorials. Finally, there is a word for people who sit alone in their bedrooms playing with themselves, and it's not nice. At your embrionic stage, it's good to sit down with anybody who can bash out a few notes on a guitar, piano, nose-flute etc. and learn with and from each other. As to learning your new obsession, my advice would be to get at least a few lessons from a good tutor to give you a head start, that's a BASS tutor, not a guitar teacher who thinks making a few bob extra teaching bass will keep his coke habit running freely. The benefit of even a few lessons will teach you how to hold and operate the instrument correctly to prevent bad habits forming (which might hinder your progress and put you at risk of strain injuries), adjust and set up the bass properly for you, and show you the fundamentals of music theory and playing a tune. A few lessons will give you some confidence and remove doubt about whether you are doing it right.
