Ain't Nobody

Afternoon all,

My band have been covering Chaka Khan's "Ain't Nobody" for a while now. All's been going well, the crowds love it, but the band are thinking it sounds off without the little "bubbly" at the very, very beginning. The keys player hasn't been able to figure it out and I thought I'd have a crack at it.

So, does anyone know how it's played? The whole track is fine, it's just that one little bit right at the very start.

Cheers,

James

This might help...although it is a bit of a handfull, best done on keys - two hands needed,
unless you sequence it.

Synth intro

Main Bass Synth line.

If you are having trouble opening the file[s] - replace .ipb with .pdf at the end

Even down to C sharp?

I've yet to require a low C Sharp. I drop it to get the E Flat and that's about it I'm afraid. Sorry to disappoint.

I downloaded the version from here http://cocosbassment.com/ but it goes down lower than D, the trouble with that song is the fact there isn't actually any bass on it so you just have to do what you can IMO, I cant recall seeing anyone try any do the funny bit at the start though, surely a keys players job if at all?

Nice to play a song containing an E# though ;)

I think the song sounds crap played on anything other than a five string bass, what are you using?

Agreed. (And I'm mostly a 4 string player). Even if you lower the key ,which many singers would need to do, it still has to be in that lower register otherwise it just sounds weeny.

The run up through the C# D E octaves sounds tasty imo, glad its not just me, maybe if we had a synth player who was handling the lower register it would be ok without the erb but as we don't it wouldn't be in our set on a standard tuned 4, the version in my link plays across and up and down the neck too so not really an option for a B bass either.

We have just learnt this tune and our keys player nailed the intro and it sounds great so I would tell him to get his act together rather than try and emulate it on bass!

Agree with the comments on using 5 string, we play in the key it was recorded in so you are looking at Eb and on a 4 string it does sound a bit pap. I have come up with a bassline somewhere near to the original but also adding in a bit of my own stuff to make it more our sound. It is hard because as said before it is all synth and no real bass so really hard to copy even with the Deep Impact on!

I use a 5-string and a Synth voice on the V-Bass. Think the original part was a synth, Greg Phillinganes played it with one hand!

I did a cover (well two variants) of this four years ago and the original, as Gunsfreddy has said is Eb. The bubble bit's just octave jumping Eb-Oct-Eb-Oct on a synth - I used a Roland Jupiter 6 and a Yamaha DX7 on this one:

I cocked up a bit on the timing as I played each bit 'live' and multitracked, so I recorded it with guitar, organ, electric piano and my home-made p-bass and transposed it to standard E:

It's the bit before this , notes seem to be roughly Bb Db Eb repeated but with a bunch of swirly effects.
