My Top Ten Most Played Songs by Pub & Function 'Covers' Bands.

If a band at a pub I was at played limp bizkit, disturbed or korn, me and my narrow mind would leave. I just have this theory that middle class yanks espousing directionless rage and anger to fellow 1st world woe mongers or spouting out such class as "I did it all for the nookie" a tad distressing, unfocused aggression and unjustifiable self loathing don't do it for me. But then I'm a dik.

Hmm. That's quite a specialised list. Do you do many pub gigs?
Tis specialised, we do pick our pubs wisely and have played a few wrong ones. We did used to do standard stuff but didnt really enjoy it. We have a good amount of gigs and some very loyal fans, but we do have a gig on black friday (dec 21st) at a middle of the road pub and are a little nervous about it kicking off ;-)

I was in a band with a drummer who had a similar outlook to you. Only listened to a narrow range of music and practically vetoed every song because he had never heard of it (and therefore no one else would have.)

It was a real shame and an effort to get him to play anything, including songs that didn't have the same line up as us in the original recording.

I struggle to see how anyone can call themselves a musician if they don't listen to practically anything and everything.
Country to prog and many ports in between, just not mainstream and I fear that for 90% of those songs we shall just look like a bunch of old farts (which is what we are). I am also not the one that vetoes the songs, but the one who suggests stuff to have everyone else make a half arsed attempt at it so that it'll never gel and gets dropped. But never mind

Not really. Some of the public wants X Factor...but only some of the time.

At other times, The Public might want to just relax and read a book, or go for a nice meal with someone special...or maybe go and see a live band doing songs that remind them of their younger days, or just songs that they know and like to dance to.

Shocking, I know...
That wasn't my point at all...

My point was that people on here can call shows like X factor and the like as 'pap' and trivial and contrived and because of that they think that is a curse on
music as a whole. Well, that is one point of view...which, IMO, has a degree of truth...
But those same people will then say that they will play anything that the paying public wants when it comes to their own shows... so can be accused of...if you reallty wish to do that..
..of pandering to the public and lowest common denominator in exactly the same way as the dreaded Cowell does.

It just kind of struck me as ironic and funny...

Personally I think the xfactor is a legitimate way to success. However, it does come with massive risks as the media frenzy is brutal and some people can't handle the immediate rise to fame. I suspect there is more than a hint of jealosy (and there is nothing wrong with a bit of jealosy in my book) that these people have become without "earning their strypes".

Still we are bringing metal to Bordon in Hampshire on Saturday which makes me happy. Would I swap it for fame and money......YEs ;-)

Here's the official top 50 cover songs based on the set lists of bands on North West Bands website.

There's an extremely easy drinking game in there... I'm going to print that list out and take it to the pub with me this weekend. One alcoholic beverage for every whoary old cliche played off that list.

No wait, that'll only make the landlord/lady encourage those songs. <_<

The contrived and pap bit is the judges and the way it's fixed. Most of the artists are good, it's not their fault that they're part of the pantomime, other than they volunteered for it and should know that they're being manipulated.

With a covers band no one is being manipulated, other than the audience...

You're right - staying in watching X Factor is almost exactly the same as going to a gig.

I see. That's similar to what I found. He suggested only certain tunes that we would do no matter what, whereas other people suggested tunes and he refused to play them.

I don't think anyone looks like an old fart trying to play tunes like that. As others have said it's all about how you play them. You do need to have a certain 'attitude' to carry off some tunes. There are tunes we avoid because the guitarist doesn't have the chops/attitude.

No, I got it first time around, and your repeating it isn't going to change that.

I happen to disagree with you, which you appear to have an issue with.

Resorting to ad hominem personal attacks just makes you appear pompous and arrogant, so that's probably best.

IMHO this depends on the gig. If the gig consists of lifeless pap that's devoid of any creativity then (musically at least) I'd say it's on a par with staying in and watching the X Factor, although depending on the beer and clientele, the overall experience may be better :)
