baseline9 Posted August 1, 2012 Share Posted August 1, 2012 To be honest the best sound coming through on the alien ears is the drums (Andre the owner of alien ears is a drummer), they sound absolutely fantastic, however I'm more than satisfied with the bass sound. I got an audiologist to do my impressions (I messed up the kit they send, its not easy) therefore they are a perfect fit and after a while I forget they are even in. I did speak with some other companies when ordering mine (still being made) and that was the concensus. Though even if a shell did wear out, they can be reshelled for a relatively small fee. Long story but I heard about them a few years back through various musicians in christian music circles, they had great prices and a really clear website. I pre-paid about a year ago cos the prices were so good then, and only recently managed to get the molds sorted via Hidden Hearing (new job, issues with ear wax, etc caused ridiculous and embarrasing delays). Customer service is professional but personable, something I really value. Their website is also very clear, and every customer is massively satisfied. Hope I'm about to be added to their number! It isn't just decieding which ones to go for it is then working out how you integrate them into your band setup which can be a nightmare for the amateurs among us! It was for me. Their website seems alot better than Alien Ears, and heard nothing but good things about their customer service. Freddy, I see from your sig you're using an Audio Technica system, is that wireless? If so, how good is it? Not really sure what to do about wireless for IEM... Kinda hoping Line6 will unveil a digital wireless IEM system at NAMM 2013! It is very good, great sound and easy to use which suits me . I did look at Shure PSM range and the cheap ones from Thomann and this seemed to sit nicely in the middle. Wireless is very handy though. I noticed that as an optional accessory you can have a lavalier mic so you can hear whats going on around you, so your band mates don't need to scream at you to no avail on stage to get your attention Ever tried using it? Also, one thing I'm a little aprehensive about with all these IEM Wireless systems is that the receiver packs all share the same flimsy antennas! Used to have a Sennheiser instrument wireless and the antenna has a big kink in it where it got bent. Not sure if there are any brands without that or whether it's just something I'll have to deal with =/ Yeah figured if I'm gonna spend that much on customs I may as well go the whole 9 yards Quads ftw! I was planning on getting a set of Alien Ears when i could afford it, though i think i'll go have a look at 1964ears as well. The ACS T1 Live has built in ambient mics on the outside and I understand that they are launching a belt pack that also enables you to mix in the sound around you - so I may look at that in due course. My T1's are so good that at rehearsal we now have to mic the drum kit up as I could not hear anything of it with the mix in my ears which I guess is the point! The antenna is ok on the AT system - never had any cause for complaint on it yet. I did like the look for the Shure systems but could not find the money for one. mcgraham Posted August 15, 2012 Share Posted August 15, 2012 To be honest, anything capable of providing a signal from your bass and from a mix to headphones can make a rudimentary IEM system. I did it for years with some cheap buds and a signal splitter/cheap mixing desk. There are many problems with this though: - poor quality earbuds/headphones can leave you not enjoying the experience - inconsistent mixes from venue to venue - dangerous incoming levels of the mix if someone else is in control of the level (need a limiter really, but this starts to become pretty specialist). - etc If you can sort out your own mix and can reduce the magnitude of the above issues then it's totally workable on a shoestring budget.
