JTUK
A friind of mine pretty close to the business said that a lot of policies were actually underwritten by the same few companies and therefore a kind of cartel was effectively in place. And also that you should not assume that one years policy is the same the next year...unless you prudently check. A renewal isn't any sort of garauntee that you get the same policy ..and that is because the terms underneath may have changed and you need to trawl the policy religously. Insuraing and liabilities are getting mroe and more expenisve every year..look at how much the average motor claim now is...and you'll see why the underwriters have to rewrite pretty often. Understandably, the business needs to legislate their costs...AND DO..so you just need to be aware of the goal posts potentially moving ....OFTEN..!! BottomE
I have ditched a lot of insurance recently. Under severe questioning most of these companies will admit that you ain't covered for the stuff that you need to be covered for. I accept that my guitars aren't covered outside of the house and act accordingly.
steve-bbb
My lots insured (other instruments too, around the £8k mark) for IIRC just over £100 a year
thast soundquite good - but the only proof of any insurance company is how well they deal with a claim i once requested a quote from a photography insurance secialist company for a similar amount of cover - they wanted more than my car insurance! spinynorman
It looks like the Endsleigh insurance only covers instruments. I've been insuring a minimal amount of gear with Musicguard mostly because it works out cheaper to get PLI included on that policy than to buy it from them stand-alone. I can't envisage a situation where the MG policy for the instruments would pay out. Has anyone found a cheaper way to get PLI?

Now consider what happens in the event of a crash with all my instruments in the car

MacDaddy
Has anyone got experience of claiming on the Musicians Union instrument insurance?
that's who I'm with. I've never claimed but their small print isn't as small as other companies. eg gear is covered in use, in transit, on stage... erisu
Hey guys, I'm pondering around if I should buy insurance for my bass for a gig that's happening this Saturday in Spain. I'm flying via Ryanair and checking in the bass with a flight case (looks bullet proof to me!) but worried about if the bass will be stolen/damaged: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Spider-Aluminium-Rectangular-Bass-Hard-Flight-Case-/180830874213?pt=UK_Guitar_Accessories&hash=item2a1a5c2a65 I checked out Music Guard and their FAQs say I'm covered from theft/damage during transit providing a rigid/hard body case is used during transportation: https://www.jltonline.co.uk/secure/faq.asp?product=Music&promCode=&visitorSessionID={44FA281E-9C81-4996-B32B-E569D724E31A}&question=14 They quoted me £40 for the year. Anyone have any stories about theft/damage from a checked in instrument??? Thanks!

Bassmekanik
I`m currently trying to get a fresh valuation on my Rickenbacker because, apparently, my home contents insurance will cover me but "it must have been valued within the previous 2 years of any claim being made". Having bought it 2 years ago I guess the purchase price/receipt was sufficient but my 2 years are up. Being in Aberdeen its not really handy to walk in to somewhere in London etc so does anyone here have any idea where would do either an over the phone + pics valuation (hard to do i know) or somewhere that isnt 500+ miles away from my house? Any and all suggestions are welcome. Apparently my household contents insurance covers my bass (and equipment) whilst outside the house too - although having bought a nice MM stingray i doubt the Ric will be leaving my house very often now. I guess i need to read up on the small print to confirm that
musophilr
It's a bit naive expecting to take on a bet with an insurance company that something bad is going to happen without there being weasel words in the contract that will excuse them from paying out if they lose.
