I'm a terrible bassist so haven't felt able to contribute but, I am looking to get some lessons and learn to play properly... Anybody in East Lothian/Southside of Edinburgh recommend a good teacher? Dave Tipping Posted February 6, 2012 Share Posted February 6, 2012 +1 for pressing on yourself ... you'll pick up some good tips on where to rest your thumb .. and finger positioning etc. from youtube .. the rest is all about playing and playing some more. Start with a few of your fav bands .. keep practising until you can master a couple of tunes you like. If you've got any guitarist and drummer friends .. once you've got a couple of tunes learned try and get a wee jam together. Playing with others was the kick up the backside I needed when learning. I feel like I am just muddling along right now. To keep it interesting I am learning stuff from bands and genre's that I wouldn't normally listen to (which can't be bad) and is actually way more fun than getting beaten by the hard parts of songs that I do know! I'm still awful at playing but I would recommend playing along to a drumbeat or metronome. I never used to bother but that meant everything I played was out of time (and still is).
