Been a few posts on these Tele basses but has anyone seen one in the flesh yet, even, better had a noodle on one, and for a bonus point bought one?

My Squier Tele is my favorite bass so far and having a rear pup would seem to be my ideal bass....'for the foreseeable future'

cheers guys

No offence and dont want to be picky but I hate the squier '51: nothing in comparison other than the shape and finish. Alternatively, Squier does offer better quality to the beginner and budget end player, so not all bad :)

I think for the price of the new MP Pbass, you could pretty much pick up a MIJ/CIJ '51 2nd hand.
The pick up configuration on the MP is one I'd like to try out after seeing a custom shop in USA sporting it, sort of "pawn shop" look and feel to it but the overall look is quite cheap looking that I don't see why they haven't added this to that series!

I wish you all the best trying to find this bass or what you need to know of it (no harm in calling up guitar stores ;] )

Interesting.....

I think I'd rather go for the beast that Chris Squire put together in the very early 70's

.....so two 50's pickups, with some interesting control cavity action going on (!) and an old style bridge.

Would be kinda cool to put something together like that !

I meant the squier 51, like the one in my pic. TBH I've never tried the mudbucker ver but I had picked one up and had some weight to it! <3 gotta love a heavy bass :)

My problem is, I've tried so many sh*t quality basses, mostly ibanez and Indonesian and once I felt the American and Japanese made basses I've not put one down or bought any budget basses since. Some say I'm spoilt :) lol

Never to say these budget basses won't take over though, I think squier and the fender MIM's are getting better with time.
The bass in question, I can see this going far and possibly Fender making it into a standard model with the demand for modded/reproduced, vintage basses from Squier and Fender.
Interesting. The one posted looks like a stripped-down version of the Fender Lotto Bass that had two mudbuckers. The Lotto cost over $ 6 000 if I recall correctly, hence the name. http://bassoutpost.com/index.php?topic=2112.0
Your my hero, been looking for that for aaaaaages!
Did see it origionally on musicians friend but never seen it since. Looks great though, you would have to win the Lotto to purchase it though ^_^ lol bad pun I know

Actually, I stumbled upon it while doing research for my latest project, a '68 Tele bass. Then, just to add to the envy I found this video, where Will I Am's bass player gets one given to her at the Fender Custom Shop. Bad sound quality, but since these things are so rare, I'll share.

Are we hijacking a thread?

That's a fantastic bass, he used it for a few songs on Time and a Word I believe, and Lucky Seven on Fish Out of Water. As far as I know it was wired stereo, with each pickup having it's own control plate, the extra one from a Telecaster.
You can see him play the bass in the 'No Opportunity Necessary' video, although it sure sounds like he used a Rick on record.

Cosmo Valdemar, I must thank you for posting that video, you know I was 13 back when the "Time and a Word" almbun was released, never saw that video, to this day I didn't know there was a video, still... that record was on my turntable on repeat for hours and it was a wonderful time of my life, we were very happy and carefree, and just listening to that song has cheered me up no end.

I have to admit that bassline was an inspiration and one of the deciding factors that made me want to learn to play bass instead of a 6 strings, specially since everyone else wanted to be Jimi Page, Eric Clapton or even Hendrix back then, I wanted to be a Chris Squier, a Jack Bruce or a Greg Lake.

I think a lot of us from that generation might well agree that sadly they don't do music like that anymore.

Cheers for that.

Thanks for that Cosmo.

I think there may be more footage of it on the DVD that came with the Fish Out of Water remaster - will have a rummage

Would be a great little project wouldn't it - has definitely got me thinking now !

I tried one in a shop a few months ago. Nicely finished and put together, but the sound was way too old school for me. Very bassy, even on the bridge pickup. Too much mud for me. I thought I had stuffed cotton wool in my ears. I really had thought the bridge pickup might have lifted the sound a bit but no. No amount of amp tweaking could bring it out.

A shame, I wanted to like it. Someone must have liked it, it's not hanging in the shop any more ;)

I had mine (butterscotch) for two months before selling recently. I posted in the other 'Modern Player' thread about my first impressions two weeks after buying it. I ended up selling as I've trimmed myself down to one bass (a Yamaha BB424x in Vintage White). Here are some quick good points/bad points for anyone interested:

Good:

- well built, feels good and I couldn't fault the finish
- plenty of bass, even with the bridge pickup solo'd
- a little more note definition with both pickups on full
- great for anything requiring the mudbucker sound

Bad:

- the bridge pickup, despite having a little more definition than the neck pickup, is still muddy-sounding.
- bad for anything requiring something other than the mudbucker sound
- might feel heavy for some (weight didn't bother me)

Here's a quick demo of it with a new set of Rotosound nickel roundwounds direct into my Zoom R16 recorder with no EQ. You'll hear (in order) - both pickups, neck pickup, bridge pickup (tone at maximum) and then both pickups, neck pickup and bridge pickup (tone at minimum):
