Profanity filter gone wrong?

I'll butt back into this, as it's in danger of becoming a bitchfest (can we say "bitch"? Seems we can.) and state that really the point is that the filter here is the problem. I regularly use about 5 other boards which have profanity filtering - these either substitute vowels, or replace words with ****s, and work on a carefully & intelligently selected list of words, rather than what looks like random selections of letters within other words, selected by an educationally subnormal American with a predilection for gay porn! :)

Joking aside - it's the nature of the filter in use here, rather than the fact there is one. I never gave it any consideration (and I don't think I swore, either) until it started mangling my PMs! Hopefully it'll be tweaked until it's workable, given time - or better, replaced by a less obtrusive, more language-sympathetic substitute.

You girls can get back to your hair-pulling now.

J.
Do you not see the funny side of this?!
I think it's hysterically funny that someone thinks it's a good idea to filter
the substring 'ass' in a forum called basschat.
Thats interesting, it hadn't occurred to me that if we have a site full of foul language it can be picked up by 'parental control' type software and web surfing URL blacklisters.
There's no doubt that it will get onto the blacklists though. The most obvious reason will be the
'chat' in 'basschat' , which will get flagged as a chat forum. The second reason will be that most
sites which allow messages to be sent and recieved are blocked because they circumvent
corporate email policies. The effect of the odd expletive is neither here nor there.

Like other posters, I'm not in favour of the smartarse replacement strings. As Joe so elegantly pointed
out, this has the potential to give more offence than the offending bon mot. If this filter has to
stay, the censoring mechanism needs to make it absolutely plain that the changes were made by
a filter.

I'm in full accord with you, Pete, and you've provided some very enlightening info on the way that workplace control-freak systems operate. Stone me, I'm so glad I'm a freelance who works from home!

If word filtering has to be implemented (which, in my opinion, it doesn't - but I've made that plain already), asterisks would be the only sensible form of substitution. Then, at least, our posts would stand less chance of turning into gibberish.

Gawdon Bennet! I'm not sure abaaaht da filter thin' - doesn't IPB allow da user ter select whether da filter is applied ter their viewing? I work in a bar fer goodness sake, I only 'ear words ov Roarf le'ers long! (You know.. Pint, wine, shot, nuts - obviously). OK?

Sorry - But yes, I'd say that it needs to either be switchable for each user, or that the replacement terms are understandable to everyone without it being offensive. Maybe just Cockneys understand these terms, or all Londoners, maybe even everyone from England - but I certainly haven't the time or energy to decrypt some of the sentences appearing with a Cockney Rhyming Slang dictionary.

Oh - And the gay thing gets my back up a bit.

Aw shucks.

Some more enlightened places, including the place where I work, is now switching off and unblocking many categories that were
previously filtered. This is being done on the grounds that it's not the job of equipment provided to enforce a security policy to
also enforce various acceptable-use and working policies on behalf of Human Resources or whatever they are called these
days.

There's also a lot of time wasted over false positives. My favourite was the for-sale section of the Mini owners
club website, which got flagged under 'Criminal Skills' . Someone had seen the Italian Job too many times I think.

A serious suggestion for the mods to consider: lots of forums and blogs have a button at the bottom of posts to report
anything that you consider offensive. This to my mind will be a better way of alerting the moderators to real problem
areas or users, though it will probably make more work. Whaddyathink?
I think if the powers that be are trying to stop this site being flagged by website filters, maybe they should change the name of the 'Bass PORN' forum to something else?

Just an idea.
I was just thinking the very same thing.... :)

As far as I knew it was an unwritten rule not to swear. Generally, if I join a forum, I like to make a good impression and try not upset anyone, so I acted by example.

In my opinion, a non-swearing forum is a happier forum and has a much better family atmosphere. Although, like in a PG movie, I think the odd curse in a non-aggressive way is fine. - I think this is the best way to be (and how basstalk was) because it's relaxed, sensible and trusting. There's always someone that acts excessively and unnecessarily though. But I don't think one person's negative actions should change the way the forum works - an edited/deleted thread and a explanatory PM is an amicable way of getting the point across in cases of unnecessary profanity, although this is subjective I know.

I don't mind asterisks, I guess they get the point across. But I personally find the rhyming slang annoying and passively obtrusive. However, it makes for creative comical spoonerisms and replacements ala: "you better pucking feg it" ... or the Home Improvement inspired: "back the truck outta here".

Anyway, it's not up to me. I just hope to see some Admin led polls in the future.

On the old BW forums I got well and truly burnt a couple of times for posting that I had been offended by some stuff. The mods also weighed in and so I accepted that if I was going to participate and gain the benefits of the forum then I had to accept things as they were. I now feel that we just have to accept each other and the way we put things in our posts. If anything got drastically out of hand then obviously a mod would intervene. What I found however is that many people didn't grasp why something would be offensive to an individual. Therefore, it would be too tedious to constantly be wondering what causes offense. So why don't we just see how we all get on and if anything gets too extreme then it will be obvious to all concerned. Just a few rambling thoughts from a former burnee.

By, "didn't grasp" do you mean too unintelligent? Because that's how it comes across.

My reading of those incidents was that you have a very thin skin and managed to find offense where absolutely none was intended. You weren't burnt, you deliberately stuck your hand in a furnace and then complained about the warmth.

I wouldn't have mentioned it if you hadn't resurrected the subject.

I most definitely did not mean that anyone was unintelligent. I also have a very thick skin if you only but knew it. However, it was certainly not my intention to resurrect anything. My post was really trying to be helpful in saying what I had learnt from the past and trying to be more open-minded. Maybe, I'm just not meant to be a member of this forum. Sorry everyone.
