How do you mute your E string?

+1, I actually found my self doing it, it sounded great so I use it when I need it now.

When you mute with your finger each finger sounds different, including the left (thigh bit, if that be such a part) of your thumb. If I mute with my thumb, I pluck with the thumb also, if I mute with my fingers (middle or ring), I use my index and middle finger to play.

It varies with me depending on what I'm playing.
On a 5 string I discovered a while back that my thumb rests on the top of the B-string and little finger rests lightly on the underside of the E-string and they all move out of the way naturally when those strings need plucking.
