having used these pointy things since 1985, I have become (reluctantly) somewhat of font of information on them and find rare stuff for people from time to time.

B.C.Rich doubleneck Bich basses are VERY rare, only 7 are known to have been built.

I have known for about 6 years, that the Spinal Tap Doubleneck Bich bass was in the vaults at the Chicago Music exchange.I spoke to them a few years ago, asking for the serial # and pictures, they wouldn't give them to me, but wanted $50,000 for it

So, doing a search for the Archive today, I found Chicago Music exchange selling the Bich, for $20,000, sh*t, I even offered to do a straight swap for my Lynott Mock

I then offered it to a friend of mine, and he said "What, This one" and sent me THIS Picture

WTF???? Please take some time to study the Grain Pattern of the bass and notice the Kahler made Brass Bridge on the 4 string neck

THAT is NOT the bass Chicago Music Exchange is selling, this IS

To be fair, nowhere in their advert, does it actually say, this IS the bass from the film, although on the emails I had years ago, they believed it to be the Spinal Tap Bich

So, it got me wondering, Chicago's bass has a 1986 serial #, I checked, the Film came out in 1984, the grain pattern and bridge is wrong

BUT

please study this bass?

"Yuck, WTF" etc etc was said about it back when it was for sale, I found a buyer for it, he was desperate for a doubleneck, study the grain patterns on the bass, and the bridge, This Gentlemen, and ladies IS the Spinal Tap Bich bass.

Here it is in the 1985 B.C.Rich catalogue

Here is the VERY same bass in the 1982 catalogue

It has often puzzled the owner and myself, as to why the hell B.C.Rich would spray the necks on this bass and change the pick ups, I thought it was because they didn't sell it the first time round, so they thought they would change it a bit to see if they could get a punter for it.
I now firmly believe, BCR lent them the basses, when it returned, they KNEW people would know it was a used bass, so thought that if the sprayed the necks a different colour, changed the hardware and pick up colour, nobody would recognise it as the Spinal Tap Bich

It is virtually impossible to get 2 guitars, in this case basses, with Identical Grain patterns in the wood

My friend is Stoked, so am I, for him

We now know EXACTLY where the Spinal Tap Bich is

Good detective work!

Stuff like this is funny, I wonder if it would devalue the bass because the re-finish and electrics change usually would (and because it's not the same colour it was in the film), or if - because of it's history and it being sent back to BCR and them doing the work before being sold as "new" - it wouldn't affect it. I guess there's nothing you could really compare it to. Just musing to myself really. :)

Very good point, I told my friend, Who I had to phone in the USA, lazy sod, that, If it were mine, I would change it back to what it was in the film, it really couldn't hurt the value, and might even increase it.He would have a hard job getting the 8 string bridge in chrome though, unless he wanted to pay me a bloody fortune for mine :)

Cool story bro. Like really.

Derek Smalls is a legend.

We're very lucky in the band in that we have two visionaries, David and Nigel, they're like poets, like Shelley and Byron. They're two distinct types of visionaries, it's like fire and ice, basically. I feel my role in the band is to be somewhere in the middle of that, kind of like lukewarm water

My friend is currently too shell shocked to even think straight, It will take a lot of thought on his part.

If it were mine, it would already be heading off to have it done and I would be searching for 4 Dimarzio's in Creme :)
ok, will have to settle for pics of him gigging it. If you'd be so kind as to keep us informed... :)
He usually gigs either his own make of basses, or, funnily enough, gigs a Fernandes B.C.Rich Eagle copy. He doesn't like to risk his B.C.Riches out live, especially after having a Mockingbird stolen from him from a load out in New York in 1987, I found it for him in 2007, so he now has it back :)

I hate this, some great history going on with this thread for a very interesting and symbolic bass, then it's gonna get hidden away in someone's personal collection where only a few people can enjoy it.

It's his money and his bass, so his choice, but it's a crying shame.
