I got the first album, Taking Off, and a Marcus Miller one (can't remember the title, green cover) which did nothing for me.

This is from Takin off.

Love it. The glory days of funk sax players- Tom Scott, Brecker Bros etc before the clones came along.

The Green album- that sounds like the Sanborn album that Run For Cover was off- Voyeur?

I'm all about the 80s Sanborn- Straight From The Heart, Change of Heart, Close Up. My first introduction to Marcus Miller.

I almost got to go see him and his band in Paris a few months back. We opted for Gregory Privat (w/ Hadrien Feraud) instead. Very energetic.

I've never really listened to Sanborn. My Dad hates him. Supposely Sanborn did a soundtrack for a movie and my Dad said all he could hear throughout it was some 'bloody sax wailing crap over the dialogue'... hence the hatred.

The thing with Sanborn - he can play one note and you know who it is straight away. Its his tone. Great R&B player.
I got to see the gig in the mid 80's over at Wembley when his band [Miller, Gadd, Bullock to name a few]
were supporting Al Jarreau and his band [Nate East, Ricky Lawson, Greg Phillinganes, Patches Stewart, to name a few]
Some gig, and very serious talent on show. :)

Yes. The late Bob Berg was like that too, instantly recognisable. God, that was a tragic loss.
Always found Sanborn to be a bit of a lightweight. Great production values and some good players etc but no depth.
I find him a bit naff personally - clearly a good sax player but I find his tunes/playing a bit dull. I do occasional gigs with a quintet led by a sax player that loves Sanborn, so 70% of the set is Sanborn tunes. Pleasant enough to play, but nothing to really get your teeth into.

A massive +1 for Bob Berg, he doesn't get nearly as much exposure as he should. I first heard Berg on 'Snakes' (not to be confused with the Sanborn tune) and immediately got hooked.
