1. I met Paul Jackson once, backstage after a Herbie Hancock & The Headhunters gig at The Barbican in London. He was an excellent and very big chap. I said I am a bass player and that he's been a big inspiration to me for years. He said let's grab some beer and talk back in his dressing room. He plunged his huge paws into a big tub of iced beers, pulled out 2-3 beers between the fingers in each hand and headed off with me following and thinking to myself, that's a few beers and I have to drive later. PJ stopped, turned round and said: "Ain't you gettin' any beer?".....!! Anyway, we had a good chat. I asked him how he got that incredible tone of his. He turned his paws over to show HUGE welts about 3mm deep running through his left-hand fingers and mashed-up finger tips on his right hand and said "Hit those strings as hard as you possibly can; that's where the tone is!"
2. You deserve another bump for a great bass at a great price. If I didn't already have one of these, the cash would be in your hands already. If someone else doesn't see the sense in buying this bass, whether they need it or not, then the world is mad! Once you have one of these, you won't need anything else; they do it all!
3. Ta Chili I know you were impressed with that bit of sensible acquisition going completely off-piste due to GAS; so check this out........ http://basschat.co.u...92#entry2823292
4. Used the Phaser, Autoswell, Chorus and Flanger at gig last night.....fantastic sound!
5. Now I am in the deep end without a clue what to do!
6.
Yeah, the filters will never win that battle!!! Great to hear you're loving it, nothing better than loads of great to sounds to tap into and inspire. Check out The Fretboard forum if you haven't already, Strymon gear comes up on there from time to time, they do some very interesting boxes and The Fretboard has a good fx for sale section. I've got no room left on my purposely small board..... Just too many nice boxes out there to tempt us
Thanks for tip on The Fretboard, not heard of that forum before; will check it out. As it happens I have same problem, I restrict myself to smaller boards deliberately too!
7. No question, it has to be the MuFx TruTron3x, made by Mike Beigel himself and Bootsy is a fan.... You can get them direct from Mu-Fx and while you are at it, I would recommend getting the Octave Divider too. There are some seriously GAS-inducing vids online of both on their own and used together. The TruTron3x is a modern upgrade of the original legendary MuTron, which is exactly what Bootsy used to get those funky sounds. They are not cheap though and you need to get a 12v AC power supply into an unusual connection; but you can pick up UK 240v supplies of this type online for about £8 I think. I bought both pedals and negotiated a $15 discount to leave out the US PSUs to help me buy UK PSUs instead. If you go down this funky path, message me and I'll dig out details of where I got it all. PS. I used to have a mini Q-Tron and found it a bit too uncontrollable with nasty volume spikes. When tame it sounded great; but not a patch on the TruTron, which is actually better than the original MuTron, as confirmed by bassplayer in my band who has both. The Q-Tron was designed by Mike Beigel too, after he lost control of Musitronics; it was based on the MuTron, but made cheaper for EHX to produce.
8. Cheers Chili, I've been doing just that today. Man, the preset tones are SOOOOOO good, I almost don't think I will need to create my own. Some of the Chorus and Flange sounds are about use best I've ever heard. The Rotary and Vibe stuff is v. Good too and there are some crazy fun Destroyed and Quadrant sounds in there from loose connection crackles sounds to playing the our an old analogue phone to some fun ring mod alien sounds and plenty of other goodies. The Tremolo is excellent and the Phase is good too. I am probably least impressed with the Wah and Filter tones so far; but they are competing with MuFx TruTron3x, so it's an unfair comparison. The depth of parameters on tap is astonishing, including how much Headroom you want your effect to have....v.nice. As I've learnt my way around the Möbius it turns out it is v simple and intuitive to use too. Obviously more complex than a simple 1-4 knob single stomp box; but still pretty easy. I think main problem will be choosing from so many good modulation sounds.
9.
On the subject of Paul Jackson, you might want to check out some of these Youtube clips with my old mucker and bandmate Jimmy Copley on drums. Some lovely playing from Paul, Jimmy & Char Paul, Jimmy & Char
that drummer is tight! And great to get a view of what PJ is up to with those nimble fingers that almost never seem to move.
10. My name is Bassnut and I am a music-equipment-aholic. It all started when.....fill in your own lame excuse
11. I have not used a Phase 100; but I have used other one or two knob simple phasers and I have almost always found a problem getting them to sit well in the mix, due to either gain suck or gain addition. Personally I think all phasers and in fact many modulation effects need a gain control on the outside (some have micro gain pots internally). One alternative might be to get a Clean Boost/Cut pedal to put in front or after it.
12. Haven't watched this for a while - it's one of my fave bits of music video and great to hear so much more of the tone and subtlety of these funk gods.
13. I have one....killer bass and looks cool as fook!
14. bought a bigger pedal from Stu. very fair and straight to deal with. Delivery was perfect and quick. Pedal was just as described in A1 condition and working perfectly. He even threw in a sweetener of clever slim patch leads. Excellent chap! Deal with confidence with that happy bunny!
15. Got the Mobius and it is capable of some incredible sounds, including many great ones preset from the factory that would take years to come up with oneself. It seems to have 100 presets, 50 from factory and 50 that you can create yourself. It took at least an hour to get up to speed with the very basics of what it can do. Sound quality seems excellent and it has some clever tricks, like the option to feed it, like this....instrument - mobius - amp....or like this.....instrument - amp - mobius...., if you plug it into the fx loop of amp and into the front. Of course you can place other pedals anywhere you like in this signal and change the order with the press of a footswitch on the mobius. very clever and useful. Size wise it's equivalent to 3 standard MXR boxes stuck together (with no leads in between) and the inputs are all top loading; so not a massive sacrifice of space given that it is equivalent to at least 12 different modulation pedals and endless combnations of the same. It runs of standard 9v DC Boss type jack, but needs isolated minimum of 300Ma current to run at its best. I haven't dared try it on less current or in a daisy chain; but Strymon do not recommend this action. I've only had an hour of playing on top of an hour of learning how the thing works; but so far it's a big thumbs up.
16.
Lol, proper GAS! When it arrives, do tell
Ha, yes indeed....when in doubt, do it with overkill is my motto! yes, will report back on the Mobius, when I've got to know it a bit.
17. Ok, I wanted small and cheap multi-modulator. So this being BC what happens? Yes, GAS! I have splurged on the Strymon Mobius being sold by OneHappyBunny of these parts. Oh well. I am sure it will be a lot of fun with crazy good tone and possibilities.
18.
Sound quality wise, depends if you're a purist and what you expect from a pedal and how they react with your current tone. If you have a guitar and amp tone that you love then I'd put money on these pedals compromising that, making it thin, less pronounced and considerably weaker. But if you just need a job done, a tool for the trick then I guess either would do that for you no problem. I'm the first to admit I'm a tone snob, I notice things others don't seem to mind. Wish that wasn't the case
Hmm....I'm a tone snob too and what you say is what I am afraid of.....Even if this only meant to be a back up, I do like my Phaser and Chorus to be very lush and full sounding with no volume drops or spikes, unless I want them.
19.
Nux Modcore would be ideal
NuX Modcore does look like it would do a lot of useful things. How is it for volume drop or spike against clean signal? I've read that quality of nobs and jack inputs is not always good with these; any problems with those?
20. Hi I am looking for a multi-effect modulator in a small package for small board and as a reserve in case of any problems on my main gigging pedals. Two contenders are: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191607401053?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT http://www.donnerdeal.com/donnerr-alchemy-modulation-effect-guitar-pedal-16-model-true-bypass.html Both the Rowin Wave Revolver and the Donner Alchemy are ridiculously cheap for so many goodies and it appears to come down to a trade off between size vs number of effects. I wonder how good the sound and build quality is though, does anyone know?
21.
No idea..... but this is something similar with more effects built in for ~£30
Wow, that Donner Alchemy pedal is ridiculously cheap for so many goodies. I wonder how good the quality is? Does anyone know? BTW I am looking to use this for guitar more than bass? So will re-post question in Effects forums for guitarists too.
22. Always wanted a phaser, flanger. And chorus in one and this one is small and cheap too. Does anyone know anything about this puppy? http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=191607401053&globalID=EBAY-GB

24. GAS got the better of me; I have to pass on the Orbiter. Good luck with sale of this fine looking phaser.
