1. Looks like powering the TruTron or Octave Divider from Mu-Fx could be a drag, unless you have a fancy pedal power unit like Voodoo Labs and I am not even sure how easy it is to power more than one Mu-Fx pedal off a pedal power supply. Bo0tsy, how are you powering yours?
 2.
Stop it!!! I'm feeling bad enough for not grabbing that GR2...
I've got a GR1 too and despite the blend mix I think I heard that the GR2 is not as good as the GR1, possibly 3 Leaf Spencer was already trying to go more in Mutron direction with GR2 and it seems like maybe nobody can really capture the Mutron sound except Mike Beigel himself and he's started making them again as http://www.mu-fx.com/store
 3.
...... keen to take a look one day at the MuFX Tru Tron, looks very interesting.
Me too. Our bass player has just ordered one and the new Mu-Fx Octave Divider too. Can't wait to hear it!
 4.
If you can make it over to Notts http://www.xperienceguitars.co.uk are amazing. I've used some top luthiers before and they are genuinely up there with the best.
I've been using Xperience for about 5 years now and they have always done good work for me. Also it turns out I was at school with Jenna down South in the mid-late 70s! PS. They've only worked on guitars for me though; I've never tried them on bass.
 5. We're doing it in our set already. Our bass player has got some great and very workable sounds for it from a Mutron with an Aguilar Octamizer. Not sure if that's what was used on original, but it works. I reckon a lot of the sound is in the fingers too tho.
 6.
It's an early '66 (late '65 neck and pots, Jan 66 pickups), all original including LPB finish. Yours looks like a pre-CBS in pretty awesome shape. Is it a '63 or '64? Btw I read you're into disco and funk so you're probably aware of that local story: in 1975 a couple of American session musicians who’ve known each other for year finish a gig at local chicken-in-a-basket venue The Heart Of The Midlands after backing up an unknown soul singer, and wind up chatting in the Bentinck Hotel (next to the train station in Nottingham}, after one of them’s had his wallet nicked. On the spot, they decide to form their own band. Their names? Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards. The band? Chic. True story.
Wow I didn't know that story about Nile and Bernard and they are two of my biggest musical heroes. Thanks for that. I bought my Stingray in early 80s cos it was exactly same as the one Bernard plays. Now I play guitar too and chose an MIJ 54 Strat because Nile uses a 50s Strat with maple neck too. Also I immediately loved the feel and sound of both instruments. In fact my current band is pretty much modeled on Chic and my band call me The White Nile!! Back to the original thread. My P is a 63 and all original in every respect apart from the finish which is a very nice and very old refin, probably done in 70s or maybe 80s. I bet yours sounds great and so nice to have original paint.
 7.
Didn't MusicMan make their combo's with a SS pre and valve power section?
That's true. They sound absolutely great too. nothing touches them for super clean and warm Fender-like valve tone. Most of the tone in a valve amp comes from the power stage. SS is more efficient and less prone to distortion, which means you get all the juicy tone of valves and all the cleanness of SS.....Leo was a smart guy! Valve pre and SS power just doesn't work in my book....
 8.
Mine is also old, blue and in Nottingham!
How spooky! And you've kept ashtrays on too! What year is yours?
 9. Get a nice old valve amp. None of the numerous older amps I've had have ever had fans. Never needed a fan, always sounded great. I've even used my Fender Blues Jnr guitar amp for bass and it works v well indeed as a quiet bass amp....and no fan.
 10. Pleased to say we went down a storm and NYE was a great party for all with plenty of non-stop boogie action! Happy New Year one and all.
 11.
We're considering this...what effect you using on the bass...if any ?
bass is using MuTron and Octave....sounds spot on. I guess any envolope filter combined with a smooth octaver would sound pretty close
 12.
Assuming so.... Let us know how Uptown funk goes - its on our setlist for next gig. Still having fun trying to get a perfect sound for the bass.
Well we tried it all together for first time and it sounded good enough to play with only the one rehearsal. I am actually playing guitar in this band; though I am a bass player first. Our bass player got some great sounds for it, using MuTron filter and Aquilar Octave....hope that helps! And there are plenty of cheaper filters out there that do a passable imitation of a MuTron, e.g. EHX Qtron
 13.
Pitcher and piano ?
that's the place - very smart and pleasant surroundings for a NYE gig!
 14.
I have been in there I think on a stag doo, glass partitions and mood lighting etc all in an old church, raised up wooden areas? Have a good un
that's the one Pete - thanks, will do our best to enjoy! Hope yours in centre of town is a blast too.
 15.
I Dj'd in clubs in the 90's, wouldn't know one end of a booth from the other now though with all this technology. Would you believe the young'ns don't even carry vinyl these day's, they don't know what they're missing carrying 160 records up three flights of stairs and across a dance floor full of sweaty armpits.
Ha! I could have written that myself!!....So true. Re OP's Q....I have 3 big playlists on iPod: chilled, grooving and dancing for different grades of mood and dance. We also have a DJ we bring in when budget allows.
 16. The Disco Prophets will be performing Disco and Funk classics from late 70s to present day at The Pitcher & Piano in Lace Market, Nottingham. Entry is free, the venue is a beautiful converted church and it is expected to be very busy with 650 capacity. Doors open at 19.00. We will be on at 22.30 and 00.05 and the club closes at 3.05. Photo of gig added now...
 17. My band The Disco Prophets have best ever gig we've had for NYE at the best bar/club/venue in Nottingham; it's a v high quality conversion of a beautiful old church. Capacity 650 and manager has made it free entry, as give back to punters (or clever marketing). We are getting extremely well paid; but above all it should be a great party and we're all looking forward to it. The two 1 hour sets will have people dancing all night too. It's disco and funk classics from late 70s to present day. Last song of night is Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars! Edit: Pitcher & Piano on High Pavement in Lace Market, Nottingham if anyone wants to come along.
 18.
Apparently my accountant already likes you :-)
Ha! I guess you must mean Melvin....he's an avid music fan and supporter of local bands, and spent years volunteering for local City Farm...a thoroughly decent bloke is Melvin!
 19. I'm three years into having set up my own function band and only now feel I have gathered good enough musicians, who genuinely feel and understand the groove, to be serious contenders for function work. We're starting to break through and get the gigs we want...at last! I nearly gave it up before Summer 2014 after much hard work and frustration; but thought give it one more go and some great people appeared from nowhere!! Along the way we had some individual great musicians who had the feel right; but never a whole band's worth at same time.
 20. I'm in! Will do likes in a mo https://www.facebook.com/discoprophets Live disco band looking for functions and weddings in 2015 in E Mids and S Yorks If you want to check us out live and come to a great party, we're doing free party for New Years Eve at Pitcher & Piano, High Pavement in Lace Market, Nottingham
 21. Bad drummer with no potential = walk away. Bad drummer with potential, but doesn't work at it = walk away. Good drummer, who won't do enough work on songs = walk away. Ok drummer with potential, who works hard at it = stick around to see he/she can cut the mustard Good drummer, who works hard at it and plays kit musically for the song = definitely staying with that band Same goes for rest of band and singers. If any of them have unbearable attitude = get rid of offending individual or walk away
 22.
Back to the OP - had a weird turn of fate the other week. Fairly well oiled in a tiny pub in Ramsgate, people dancing away to an extended version of The Message. Got talking to the DJ and turned out it was Skip McDonald ! He lives in the area and hosts a night there once a month. Naturally we then had a drunk (well I was drunk) conversation about Doug Wimbish. Pub is Queen Charlotte, Ramsgate. Any BC'ers ever in the area PM me and I'll join you for a pint.
My old mate Jeff is largely responsible for the rise of quality funky nights in Ramsgate. He moved there some years ago after much DJing in London and created a scene!!
 23. Gumtree is good for selling gear too; but best to trade locally face to face for cash. I guess that would be a popular amp though; so unless you are in especially remote area you should be able to sell it on there.
 24.
Nile Rodgers makes it sound simple, but it's actually an incredibly hard style to master. Very underrated and innovative player, and a very clever and decent chap to boot. Lesson from Justin here : http://www.justingui...007-LeFreak.php
here, here....and Le Freak is remarkably hard to get right...most players murder it, including me!
