Having said that, the finishes in the flesh so to speak, aren't as impressive as they look in the photos. I always make a point of seeing Jen's stand at Frankfurt though... it's always good to see what craziness he has got up to! I love the fact that he handles his basses with white cotton gloves too!

Brave move... Going by what seems to be most popular, you should probably be looking at either an Ampeg SVT clone or a B15 clone. Of course, you then have to convince people that your fixed spec boutique amp is better than an Ampeg (OK, thats going to be a given, but thats a strong brand name to go up against) and better than a Matamp where you can have an amp custom built to your exact requirements. (within reason). How many of these units are you looking to sell and have you got a ballpark figure?

Looks like the love for BGM is vanishing again. Half the fun of getting a new BGM is finding all the errors in it. It's like a high brow "Where's Wally?" On the bright side, we don't have to deal with the whitterings of Jon Herrera at BP mag now (at least his reviews are generally sound though)

Not taken any tools or spares - it was just a last minute call to a wedding party gig and I just grabbed an amp, a cab and a bass. About five minutes before the band kicked off, I discovered that the neck had moved and the first three frets were choking out on all strings. The only saving grace was that it was a fiver and I could play up the neck. Close call.

Nothing serious has happened in the bass world... but in the guitard world... Fender Deville died on me at a gig. Had to plug my amp modeller into the PA and hope for the best. "Fixed" Fender Deville died at a recording session in the studio. Had to borrow a Hughes and Kettner Warp 7 amp to record. I've never sounded so pants on record Brand new Fender Twin (Deville replacement) died on me at it's debut gig. Plugged into my Laney LC15 I had back then, draped mic in front of it and hoped for the best. Replacement brand new Fender Twin died on me at the very next gig. Plugged into my Laney LC15 I had back then, draped mic in front of it and hoped for the best. Replacement Fender Twin (number 3) has never given me any issues... touch wood. Can't beat a Fender though - still on the look out for the right Fender Dual Showman.

All depends upon your ears. The basses I think of when it comes to slap are - The "traditional" Jazz Bass or derivative (probably the most common slap machine) Stingray (for the LJ and Flea fans!) The "modern" (extended top end response and sound greatly influenced by the onboard preamps) GB - my favourite Status Alembic Jaydee Kubicki Fodera and I always find the Nathan East signature has a killer slap sound - Of course, once you've got the bass, you've got to set your EQ appropriately. Typically a scooped mid sound for the more modern slap sound, less so for the traditional slap sound.

Sounds like you haven't done your research and you don't really know what you are buying/want to buy. Don't get fooled by the pricetag. Come back home, research and then be prepared. If you are certain it's the one... as mentioned before, you can always mail order it. If it's already gone, then it wasn't meant to be and move on. If he told you it was a Custom Shop and made by John English, would that mean anything to you? What I'm trying to say is, if the guy was telling you anything, are you be in a position to question it? PS, there isn't a shortage of basses either.
