If you are investing in a tool to do all & do it well + last for years, an investment, if you are going to get the use out of it, then get a Weller temperature controlled iron with interchangeable tips for different jobs.
I've owned one of those myself for many years and agree they are excellent. You can get a wide variety of tips and spare parts are easily available. They're not exactly cheap for once-in-a-blue-moon use though.
2. Anything under 40 watts and you will not have enough heat on some jobs. As for solder, some of the generic brands can be horrible and it's probably worth going for a well known brand. I can't advise on the composition, as I'm still using up my stocks of leaded.
3. The big difference in the carriers is 1. who smashes stuff up and who doesn't and 2. who sorts it out when things get damaged. I've had good experience with UPS (via Interparcel) but whenever I send anything valuable I always overpack it and take photos of the packing. It doesn't take long, but that way, when the carrier rejects your insurance claim for inadequate packaging (which is their first port of call), you have evidence to the contrary. Oh, and warn the recipient to check for external damage before signing. That's another good way to wave goodbye to your insurance claim.
4. These are GREAT pickups. They are high output yet retain the tone of the Jazz Bass - something that passive hot pickups cannot do. Although the battery lasts for several years, the pickups can be used passively in an emergency; they are then a bit quieter than a normal Jazz pickup. If I had a Jazz I'd snap them up at this price, which is an amazing bargain.
5. Forgive my ignorance, but how does a valve produce 'growly mids'?
6. Or alternatively, Haven't Met You Yet by Michael Buble. I'm just learning this for the hell of it, and it's quite interesting harmonically with some neat walking bass and some nice twiddly bits. It's not difficult to play. The midi file is here: http://www.cool-midi.com/download/michael_...met_you_yet.htm. And the (excellent) video is available on YouTube.
7. Major, I have an accurate midi for God Only Knows. Full arrangement but no chord names. If it would help.
8. I really enjoyed that. You've got a lot of competition on YouTube with that tune, but your version was really excellent.
9. That's an endorsement and a half, I have to say. Makes me wish I was back in Granadaland again - well almost.
10. I really can't stand this stuff. They are all mediocre would-be classical guitarists. They are trying to be John Williams and failing. IMO, of course.
11. Any idea how much they are - and if it's really better than a piece of foam?
12. Three Blind Mice is good.
13.
My favourite was the squier
It's just the perfect P-Bass sound. But it didn't sound as wonderfully fat and growly when I owned it
14.
Really can't understand why people won't ship abroad. I cut out dangerous places like Russia and Africa, but I've shipped basses to Spain, Italy and Australia without any problems.
Absolutely! The more people you have bidding on your auction, the more money you're going to get for your item. In my experience, including other countries in your auction can sometimes double the final selling price.
15. Of course - I should have read the first post properly. Still, the kind of HF units they fit in bass cabs don't cost £70. Somebody's having a laugh!
16.
Thanks guys, I haven't heard it with it so couldn't really miss it..to get a replacement would cost around £70 - so says Alex from the Bass Gallery.
Can't you get a replacement diaphragm? You really need to find out who actually makes the tweeter. Can you post a picture?
17. Beer, if the budget is limited, try for one of these on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CELESTION-TRUVOX-152...=item41530ab450 The chap is selling two and one of them doesn't have any bids yet, with the auction ending today. They are better than the ones you are considering.
18.
Cheers for the suggestions. The price of the Beta is definitely attractive compared to the 3015. So higher Qts is a desirable property in this situation? Is the Delta also worth looking at, or does the bigger Xmax of the Beta make it a better option?
A high Qts is not desirable at all. On the contrary; it's what you get when you reduce the size of the magnet in an attempt to build a speaker as cheaply as possible. In your cabinet, the Beta will give you one-note bass centred on 100Hz with nothing below that. To see what I'm talking about, go and have a look at the cabinet suggestions for this driver on the Eminence site. The optimum cabinet size for this speaker is around 800 litres, which should tell you something. When you try to get a little fatness out of your sound by boosting the fundamental, you will have very little power left to do anything else. Trace Elliot get away with that approach (the Trace Elliot contour), but their amps are more powerful than yours. At the moment, the best specification 15" driver on the UK market is the Fane Sovereign Pro 15-500, which costs about £80. There is also the Fane 15-500, which is cheaper (£68) but doesn't have a cast chassis - which is worth the extra IMO. I know that you don't need the power handling, but high power handling is a characteristic of a good quality driver nowadays. Any of these drivers will be considerably heavier than your Celestion, by the way. AFIAK, if you pay less than £70 for a new 15" driver it will have been built down to a price. If you're not in a rush, you could keep your eyes open in the For Sale section here. Used 15" cabinets don't seem to retain their second-hand value as well as others, and there have been some real bargains on here lately for £100 and under.
19. Our own major-minor has generously produced the very thing you need. You'll find it here on the site: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=74284. You won't find anything of this quality anywhere else.
20.
Have you heard one? I just want to add a little sharpness to the sound.
No, I haven't heard one but I'm not very keen on the sound of piezos and fifty quid strikes me as a bit excessive. You may well be happy with it, but if you can't hear one first, make sure you can return it for a refund if you don't like it.
21.
I'd use a midrange driver, just as Alex does in the Big One.
So would I, but that would need some form of crossover.
22. It's a piezo - it shouldn't damage anything. You might like to listen to it first though.
23. Yes, that Beta is great for recreating the vintage sound of your grandad's radiogram.
24. Really excellent review! Thanks for that. I will now wait for the used ones to start appearing.
