I'd be interested to see that Ric. To be honest I think he's had quite a few of them; every time I think I've seen them all someone trots out a picture of a different one. Always nice to see another though.
Not my pic, but it is the same one. Not pink, but not one which I've seen him use either.
Absolutely bob on Stu, although never read about the sanding bit. I think we discussed this before - it must be in another interview because it's not in that one; I've got it around here somewhere and was reading it a while back (unless they did two). I know Chris Squire attributes his unique tone to his bass being sanded smaller but I think we discussed that too and IIRC you said you wouldn't have know about Squire. Other than that Lem's original was "that horrible salmon pink colour" when he got it, so he sanded it off and played it like that, unsealed. He's also said the same elsewhere with a consistent story (I've also spoken to him too on a couple of occasions, FWIW). Lem was my original bass hero when I started, aged 17, in 1980.
You could well be right, I thought it was another forum otherwise I wouldn't have repeated myself. IIRC there's a pink Rick in Madrid HRC attributed to Lemmy which I thought strange. I'll see if I can find a pic, I may be remembering the colour wrongly. Is Lemmy so corporate that he'd do a "signer"?? . There are some 80's copies of Music UK on Ebay just now, unfortunately not that one. I used to like that mag.
-
FWIW, Soon after I bought my first bass I started buying a music mag. "Music UK". Around the time of the Bomber tour they did a long i'view with Lemmy. One of the things he spoke about was his Rick bass. From what I remember, he said he'd tried all the big names of basses & Rick's were the only one with a neck that he liked. Fender's were too thick & Gibson too thin. His main bass was unique because when he was bored he decided to refinish it, sanded all the finish off then got distracted. In the following years it had been "bled on, spat on & soaked in beer & bodily fluids", he then cleaned it up by sanding again, which made the body & neck much smaller than new, the entire process of which he reckoned gave it a unique tone. Course since then I've learnt that a lot of cr*p is made up for young readers of magazines, so it may be BS, though it sounded plausible.
At €1700 you would expect a certain degree of 'seriousity' from seller. Ofcourse I saw pictures, but honestly I reasoned that if one owns a €1700 hand built instrument, one does care/know what it looks like. And certainly what state the truss rod is in.
Sounds reasonable, and as the original owner of a hand-built bass I know exactly what you mean. As was said recently, you could try the Mods, it has worked in the past - and if all else fails do use the Feedback pages, it's what they're for - and you'd be doing other BCers a big favour. FWIW, obviously I agree with the posts about what constitutes "mint" - and at 3 months after the event I wouldn't say it was time to quit yet.

For any item which is costing enough to make me concerned I'd be asking for a shed-load of pics. If they weren't forthcoming I'd walk away. Or (not very practical for yourself) but again - if the price warranted it I'd be collecting only - if it wasn't as described I'd be after a discount or as before; walk away. Only time I've done that was with my Hiwatt cab. It is knackered cosmetically, but I wasn't arguing for £250.
-
Pity you couldn't find a ticket stub from the Shea Stadium inside it; the price might improve a lot then. Nice enough thing to have if you have the space, but as a working bass cab needs far more than it'd be worth.

When I was looking to get something like that done - many years ago - IIRC the complications were that there's few places do it, even less do chrome, mostly nickel due to pollution problems - and in itself it is an expensive process, which meant that you had to wait ages for the plating company to have a batch of items to do altogether so that the cost was worthwhile to them. The place I used was somewhere in Fife, but is long gone, try asking around a few metal engineering companies near you for recommendations. edit: I might be talking cr*p (no change there then) - this MIGHT be the place I used. http://www.yell.com/b/Kingdom+Metal+Finishing+Ltd-Electroplaters+and+Metal+Finishers-cowdenbeath-KY48HJ-2340612/aboutus.html But I think you'll be shocked at the price, unless they can batch it. Depends where you rae of course too.
Good evening, Elijay... Perhaps it's time for someone here to extend a 'Welcome', and 'explain' some of the 'rules'. We have several overseas folks here (I'm not in Britain, myself...), so please don't feel singled out. Posts here are started by the OP (obviously...), but he/she has little/no control from then on. Some posts are echos from previous subjects, or make (sometimes obscure, sometimes mistaken...) references to other participants, with their quirks and foibles, as 'ragging', or jesting. As with all chicken coops, there is a heirarchy, or 'pecking order'; some of our members (there, I said it..!) are well known for their cutting edge and style of 'humour'. Occasionally (but not often...), there will be a clash of opinions, depending on subject, but mostly the back-and-forth here is in good spirit, to be taken as banter, not a personal attack. I think I am safe in affirming that, if you were, for whatever reason, to be 'ganged up on' (heaven forbid..!), you would certainly be aware of the difference. (Please don't try this for a lark...). Yes, we understand that, as a 'noobie' here, you won't pick up all the subtle nuances, but be assured that we are not, from the outset, sniggering at you. You are not being bullied. Take it on the chin, scratch your head, and laugh at the crazy crew here who have mostly a hearty complicity, won over time, and an unfortunate way with words of times. (Of course, being of 'Yankee' culture is not playing in your favour, but we are, in general, a forgiving lot... ). Hope this helps; no malice intended. Meanwhile...
This is probably my favourite post of yours of all time, & should be pinned............ though to be fair all the rest of them have been crap!
Well it's a daft question then isn't it. If you aren't going to put some effort into thinking about under what circumstances, be totally pissed off anyway (which I assume you are given your behaviour in this thread), and not accept different thinking, why should we bother educating you? I don't know what music you play, or what you earn from it, but it sounds like you think it's other musicians' fault you don't earn more.
Careful, you'll start getting bombarded with PMs if you question his viewpoint; I've had a dozen or so in the past three hours... though apparently you're expected to be contrary. IME it's a long hard slog for an originals band to get paid a worthwhile amount to gig; depends as much on location & available venues as it does the bands' ability; and then if you have to travel to get decent £ then it has to be even higher to make worthwhile... though I'm aware I'm stating the obvious there.
originally from N.Ire)
.......... speaking of which, there used to be a cracking Irish bar on Nicolson St just around the corner from the Cellar, got burnt down when the Belle Angelle burnt down. Great live venue, it was where I saw my first ever Ovation Magnum
My Epiphone Texan. Put together by Gibson in 58, it's basically a J-50 with an older long-scale neck they salvaged from the Epiphone factory.
Nice - and presumably something of a rarity?
Hahaha - my thoughts too!!!
I shouldn't have said it - he's now resurrecting the "Warranty" thread via multiple PMs to me. Methinks the lady doth protest too much! It's killing him that I won't say whether I actually "am mates" with Sid Vicious, or whatever tag "Sid" was using. I'm not - to the best of my knowledge, but don't tell him, it'll keep him awake.

Yeah, excellent "how to" all round. If anyone's planning on doing this, wood veneer is getting harder to find now, depending on where you are, with the demise of decent timber merchants. I've got a piece of oak veneer going spare which I can cut into strips. It has the advantage over card in that you can easily sand it into a wedge shape if you want to make a tapered shim. PM me if you want a strip or two. Though in the fairness of open markets, it should be pointed out there's a guy on Ebay who achieves a similar effect by angle-grinding his nuts down to the depth of the fingerboard

Yeah OK, do electro's count? A prezzy off Andy Scott (The Sweet) a couple of years ago. An early Washburn electro, very quiet used as an acoustic, but plugged in it's got a lot of variety.
-
Hope this doesn't end up like another of the OPs previous threads where he stamps his feet & goes on & on for page after page demanding money until someone gives up & pays to shut him up.
It's got a bit of an upmarket, wine-bar thing about it though - I feel a bit out of place there!
Sounds a bit like Madogs used to be on George St. They just had a pianist then. I used to work on the door there donkey's years ago. No out & out jazz bars then? It'd be a shame if Edinburgh of all places lost them completely. Queens Hall used to have a few sessions during the festival, but obv. that's a venue - all be it small - rather than a cosy bar/pub.
-
Could be my memory, or the fact I've never been a jazzer, but wasn't the place on Chambers St more a straight up jazz place rather than a funky place? I seem to remember one on Morrison St (Henry's???) that was funky? There was also a place on Waterloo Place which claimed to be a Jazz Club (huge banner outside on the corner balcony) but I never saw a single jazz band there. The last year I actually lived there the Bongo Club had just re-opened at a new location down the Royal Mile area. The Bongo was always excellent for discovering new bands. Good pint? Got to be Bentleys bar next to the Kings, or Mathers on the end of Q'ferry Rd - raw floorboards & a big old bar.
You need to let that one go
Hmm, a bit dodgy with a new unknown strap, unless you've got straplocks on it.
-
Kiwi stated his interest in jazzy and funky stuff, not perhaps the most represented genres at whistlebinkies
My tongue was very firmly in my cheek, honest Guv; Binkies has been covered a few times on BC. When I used to go it had different genres on different nights - and of course it's only a 5 min walk from Chamber St.

You mean you haven't yet had a strawberry jam toastie soldier dabbed into your pickups yet? It's the whole point of having kids, to rob their cotton-buds for the cleaning of various food-stuffs & excretions from the nooks & crannies of guitars.
-
Shocked and saddened that so far there's no signs of love & appreciation for Whistle-Binkies in this thread. It used to be my first port of call for live bands most nights of the week. I especially used to like watching a band (I forget the name) who's drummer used to talk to each part of his kit as he hit it.

second earth wire on squier vm pups?!
Big_Stu replied to clashcityrocker's topic in Repairs and Technical
Cheers for your help guys, much appreciated
As you were; I may have been talking bollox. Still got the original bridge pickup off the MiM. The looped wire went to the front screw holding it to the bridge, earthing it to the bridge. Possibly same difference though. I may have been remembering the SD Broadcaster pickup I switched it for. -
In the only forum I saw chat used on extensively it did actually take a lot of the heat out of misunderstandings of the typed word. Far easier to clarify what was said, though with a membership the size of BC it may also have a lot of spectators/lurkers.

I used to have a manic obsession with all things "Slade". To the point of having three guitars as near clones of theirs, still got them, though the SG will go back to having a P90 when I find a good one..
