No, I'm from Polane, I make spelling mistakes
Yes, I noticed that & I assure you no insult was intended. I have a highly prized bass (to me anyway) but sometimes price gets in to cloud the issue too.
I have three basses I use, .................. This gear brings delight to my otherwise bitter soul and they are my priced possessions.
One of the best Freudian slips I've ever seen on this forum!
Reality check people; anyone who doesn't like the "muffled" sound of their music through ear plugs will find out that everything will sound just like that in less time that they imagine. And that "mud" will be permanent.
^this! I could give a fairly long list as to how gig induced hearing loss & tinnitus affects your every day life; & it isn't funny like they make out in comics & TV shows - not for 99% of the time it isn't anyway. It was good at the time mind - but not worth it now.
we bought the image of the girl rfom istockphoto.com for a couple of quid
A very good, valid and important point! You think Mr Hall is a tad tenacious with his copyright? He's a pussycat compared to how some image holders can be..... cross some of them & you'll be selling your gear to pay their invoice & they don't let go.
nobody needs a bespoke bass built to their own specification unless they have a disability and require a uniquely accessible instrument, or God forbid actually have a personal taste for an instrument which isn't available off the shelf, has a combination of woods which isn't available off the shelf, or wants a sound and facility which no other bass can reproduce but can actually sound like other basses, got fed up of run-of-the-mill basses with either/or quality issues, availability, not what they thought it would be, over-priced and lastly but not least has a mind of their own.
Fixed it for you

Where to look for my (first) second-hand drum kit?
Big_Stu replied to Jellyfish's topic in Other Instruments
Hi everyone, I've been trying to look around for a nice second-hand drum kit, but am trying to find place where people are selling them. My budget is about £450 and I've looked on ebay and Gumtree, but there isn't much choice really. I'm either getting something pretty awful or something way above my budget. There is one kit on Gumtree in the West Midlands at the moment, a Pearl Export EXR for £470, which is pretty much perfect, but I've not heard amazing things about them so I'm hoping to find an alternative. So where should I be looking? Local classifieds? Or are there any drum forums with UK sellers? Thanks!
Dunno about the "EXR" bit but my son's been using (& still does) a Pearl Export for 9 years - reckoned it was the floor pedal that was the weak spot & switched it for a Yamaha one. FWIW it was Slade's Don Powell's preferred kit on their spec list for years. No idea if that's a good price though. He's just switched to "Natal" via Marshall who TBH I'd never heard of until then. -
you're very likely to regret selling! There is 'seller's remorse' as well as 'buyer's remorse', I've discovered!
This dammit! THIS! .......... and it's not a seller's market just now - and probably won't be for a long time.

Future reviews on music and musical equipment.
my pet hate of reviews are people slapping and noodling on basses pretending to review them.
Brothers in Arms was the first CD. Or is that just one of those urban legends or whatever they're called?
Yeah, it has that reputation; whether it was the actual first commercial CD I dunno, it may have been the "Money For Nothing" video, MTV & the CD all in one go that pushed it. They had been made for two or three years previously; I remember my Dad (who worked for Phillips/Mullards) in the late 70's/v. early 80s, telling me the whole site had been called into a demo room. "You should have seen it ar Stuart, records the size of your hand with all the colours of the rainbow in 'em, no needle and a laser beam instead. It's the future lad". Yeah yeah Dad, keep taking the tablets. I only listened to it properly when Claudia Winkleman was on, not that I have a thing about her you understand & I think it was their choice of track from an audience nominated album. -
Yeh, whatever would Arthur Brown do?
I think he went on to smokeless coal . Saw him once - I didn't know any of his songs apart from the hit - which was his encore. A bit like a Dr & The Medics show I saw (x3 times), most of their act was B52s songs - no idea why, unless that's where the female backing vox had come from.
e-cigs
Modern technology recreating a 17Century pirates' gimmick? Excellent!

Strangely enough my "Brothers In Arms" CD has gone MiA; what makes me even more uncomfortably a typical radio 2 listener is that it was my fist bought CD . Second was a Slade US import. I'm also missing a Georgia Satellites CD which an ex bought me Haven't heard "Battleship Chains" in years come to think of it. -
Cons: * I have to have the bass routed out for the size of the circuit boards - from initial fiddling the pots will fit in the right holes, but the electronics won't fit without extra routing (i'd ignore the option of the passive tone control) Have all of the routing done to the control cavity with a new cover made for it. * Mini switch needs a new hole Buy - or have made - a new scratchplate & put the switch into that. * battery compartment has to be put somewhere (I'm thinking underneath the pick-guard?) Have the battery in a flip-up holder cut into your new control cavity cover. The shorter the wiring the better the signal & less battery drain. * re-sale value is pretty much destroyed as the bass can't be returned to it's former 'glory'. This way it won't be that big a change as to drastically affect a comparatively non-classic instrument. * it seems like... sacrileg Which isn't as bad as that itch of "would I like it?" that you'll always be scratching until you do.
Status Quo in a pub would be fun and appeals to my Anglocentric side.
They did a pub tour a few years ago; in pubs nominated by their fans IIRC. A mate of mine got his local included on it & said it was excellent - though I doubt any would have said it was otherwise.

At the middle/lower end of a techs rate that works out at about 10 hours work. The black stripes look like they're masks rather than sprayed so I think you'll do well to find an established pro that would do it for less. There was a guy on here a few months ago who was setting up as a custom guitar artist & looking for test-bed jobs to demo his work on; maybe someone will remember his name?

I once read that Blackbeard the pirate used to put long twists of brown paper fuses under the crown of his hat & light them just before he went into battle - brown paper smokes rather than burn. Nor did "Jack Sparrow" invent having little red ribbons at the end of tiny plaits under his ears, when my hair was long enough. ................ and that's all I have to say about that.
So Macca gets in three times?
Presumably; in the bits I heard there was a Beatles song & a Wings song - I assume the third is a solo effort? I suppose Lennon could have done the same if he'd been good enough Hence the common feeling about surveys & polls. -
If you were being cynical then, you may argue it's a bit of a stitch up? To be fair it was from a pre-selected list of popular albums they regularly played; only one appearance by any artist allowed - and no greatest hits types. -
It would appear the two top screws also the ones showing aren't actually doing anything as the neck came off with just unscrewing the bottom two slightly so I might need to fill the original holes with matchsticks and rescrew
You could well be right - definitely worth a try, shouldn't do any harm & you could save yourself a bill. Though as has been said many times on various threads; use cocktail sticks rather than matches. The wood is much harder & there'll be a hell of a lot of tension on those screws.

THIS is what I consider Musical Bass Playing
Big_Stu replied to Lowender's topic in General Discussion
I've heard this a few times........
Made a mistake? Make it again so it looks like you did it on purpose - More approval.
........ and this.......
Definition of jazz - they all play together and it sounds so bad they each do a solo to prove it's not their fault!
........ and always had them down as jokes rather than any kind of actual fact or anything near it; same as drummer jokes - it must be a pi**er being a jazz drummer then. My own fave is "definition of a jazz band? Five blokes playing five different tunes in a race to see who can finish first". I'm in the "bass isn't really a solo instrument camp, but I do appreciate demonstrations of playing ability on any instrument if it is actually entertaining & enjoyable, not overlong & if on a bass - sounds like a bass - & not an accident in a piano wire factory (ie slap). I was reliably informed by the drummer on this track that it was done in one take - personally I like overdriven bass sounds........ -

Big_Stu replied to Lowender's topic in General Discussion
It doesn't sound good to me. It sounds more like a bassist showing off just how good they are at playing bass rather than showing off how good they are at music.
That's what I thought when I watched this........ but being from a music show I was maybe put off by the bloke next to him trying out a drum kit & playing a different tune.
Well, Feraud, according to the Mr. Jeff Berlin, is, at the moment, the cleanest & fastest player around, to which I certainly agree:
-
it has a pre active amp, so when i pull the knob out, i get sound...............
