"I'm a better musician. Serious musicians and composers are not commercial I trained at the top music school in the US.. I'm a CREATIVE person. I am a vocalist, composer, multi-instrumentalist. I taught myself how to write music but I had extensive training. I sing advanced music and write advanced music. I can write simple music too. I need donations since the commercial world does not fund serious composers or serious musicians. I need assistance. All serious musicians do. Sorry, I forgot to ask - do you want fries with that?"
Fixed it for him.

It's been discussed - or at least suggested & shot down in flames - on Rick Resource a few times that Rick should do a budget range along the lines of Squier & Epiphone which would destroy the copy market. The response to that is that you can't compromise the legacy & quality of the original - and shouldn't have to make a lesser version for any reason. It's usually around the bit where it's pointed out that there are episodes where Squier or Epiphone are superior to their higher counterpart & that Rick already has QC issues that the thread is locked & deleted. Strange, strange people.
I'm sorry, but I fully support the "Rickenbacker Police". It is a blatant copy making money off the back of someone else's design and reputation. Bass makers of the world ........ make your own designs !!!!!!!
If Rickenbacker would sort out their manufacturing problems & reduce the waiting list I'm sure there'd be a little less demand for copies. When it gets to the point where the copies don't have the QC issues that modern Ricks have then it's an issue. When some copies are superior in all respects than Rick & other copies are a worthwhile trade-off then it's Rick that have the issues to fix. Clinging desperately to law rather than look into them is IMHO a serious mistake leading to potential buyers abandoning their plans which many posts on here acknowledge.

As can be seen from old TOTP videos John Birch made a fair few Rick copies without being stopped. However I believe his surviving business partner has been given a cease & desist notice after he had a modern John Birch (AD) 4001 well reviewed in G&B magazine. In opined that a JB was way in excess of a Rick in terms of build quality, price & function on Rick-Resource. Some guy who looks too much like Jimmy Hill for his own good took me viciously to task and then deleted my post. They don't like t up 'em!

It's the thin stuff, less than 1 mm so no it wouldn't do a cover on it's own, you have to glue it under pressure to something else. I just had a look at it & it's dried into a tight roll (which is about 2 ft long) so I wouldn't want to open it out flat, it would probably split. I'll try soaking it for a while & see what happens, but I would guess it would do an average cover, but not something like an Gibson RD Artist. That Dewars place is a French Polisher & Restorer, they were very helpful with me, maybe they'd advise you?
So if anone knows where I could order smaller amounts wood be great.
I was looking for some veneer last year and was given some medium oak stuff by a cabinet-maker in Brierfield, I forget the name* but they were on a corner on the main street. If you want to try your idea in oak give me a shout I've a fair bit left. It rolls up when dry but should flatten if it gets soaked. Failing that, have a search for a high quality cabinet maker or furniture restorer in your area. edit: * I lied; Dewars - Google Street View is your friend.

There was a JB Rick that lasted for ages on Ebay because it just showed a pickup & "a 70's classic tribute" (as opposed to "copy") in the description. IIRC it didn't sell but that may have been just the price that stopped it. There must be a way around Mr J (A)Hall, could well be that he has Rockinbetter among keywords that searches all ads?

1) If it's a good ebony and black as coal I'd trawl for a decent wood-yard that can get you an ebony off-cut, or if there's such a thing as a piano tuner near you buy an old piano key off them. Saw it to bits with a hacksaw to get fine ebony saw-dust, mix it with PVA wood-glue to make your own filler & fill the holes. When it sets it should smooth down as well as the wood does. 2) Personally I wouldn't, such things are a matter of taste - and if you ever did flog it there's no telling if the buyer would want it as spec. BUT!! .... 3) ... selling it, as you say, at a worthwhile price isn't likely, so if you went down that road you'll struggle to say the least to make an invisible mend on the bowl. I'd be inclined to enlarge the hole to standard size (6mm???) & click in one of those domed screw-head covers that DIY shops have for flat-pack furniture.
Less an allergy, more a desire not to chunder copiously over my fellow travellers.
I've heard of that - that's "Chronic High-Fat Consumption Aversion Syndrome" - looks like you're in!
I have to move to a different carriage on the train if someone gets on with a meal from burger king/mcdonalds...guess that counts me out then?
Possibly not, that's a hell of an allergy to have, and all chavs are prone to allergies and syndromes.
Settle doon, man. It's just internets lingo. The only person that's kicked off is you.
Au contraire! I'm reading some interesting replies, in amongst the guy who started the thread trying to bring "hate" into it.
-
I thought the Beatles thread (everytime) showed ............
What it showed me what that many posters on here can't let folk just have their own opinions or tastes without being denigrated.
I can't agree with very limited variance of tone at all.
Yeah, well, that's what forums are supposed to be about, comparison of tastes and experiences. My taste & experience is why I don't have a Fender bass ATMIT.
-
You think it's inflammatory... I strongly dispute that.
You're the one that implied that someone on this thread "hated" Fender bases, which implies extreme feelings. Why you couldn't use "dislike" or a simple "not like" makes me think it would have ended up kicking off - again.
-
Any dispute over the 'hate' word is irrelevant to the content of the question asked.
The problem is that once a question, that introduces an inflammatory aspect to it, is answered - then it does become part of the discussion. As I said, one recent example is the Beatles thread. I lost count of the number of times that posters "couldn't understand players denying the Beatles influence" & it ran to what? 25 pages? - But yet no-one (so far as I could see) had actually said that they didn't think the Beatles were influential. This thread is chugging along as nicely as a non-Fender bassline so I wouldn't want any escalation into silly territory as that one did.
-
The question is 'How would WoT (or anyone else) improve his or her performance by using a non-Fender bass?'
That would depend on material played and so many other personal preferences that it puts it into the realm of personal taste, which as the Beatles thread (again) showed - having personal taste, unless it agrees with the majority, is barred on this forum & lays the author open to personal attack. My own opinion on them FWIW is that it's an old-fashioned design, copied so much as to make it passe, with a very limited variance of tone. As has been said often by others over threads, they're boring.
-
IMO the bolt-on neck as an ease to repair is a solution to a problem that doesn't really exist.
It could raise another problem though, without the logo; in light of a current thread, if it was a Fender what would the owner do to show it wasn't a copy?
-
You know what I mean...
Actually I don't - I haven't seen anyone get close to use a words such as "hate". If you have another word in mind - such "meh" or any other far less inflammatory then please use it.
-
I'm a little in the dark with this, still. Would a Fender hater care to chip in and let me know in what ways my performance (musical, that is) would be improved if I were to play another brand? Thank you.
Has anyone anywhere, apart from here, used the word "hate"? One thing that is repeatedly frustrating about this forum is users who introduce a loaded word into a thread as though it's already been used & then the discussion goes off on that tangent based on a false assumption. (see under "Beatles" thread)
