  1. Clean amps allow you to accurately reproduce the sound that your bass is producing, whatever it is. For some people, that sound includes flats as a component. All my Ps (bar my Yamaha BB435) have flats on them of various kinds, from TI Flats (smooth and mellow, on my 84 Squier Medium Scale) to D’Addario Chromes (more “modern” on my Dingwall Super P), to Fender flats (more dead with foam and bridge cover on my rather dark sounding 61) Ernie Ball Cobalts (bright on my 64). They all sound great, and completely different to the zingy Elixirs on my Sadowsky Jazz for example. A Noble preamp makes everything sound terrific, without losing the character of any of them.
  2. I definitely don’t need this, but part of me really wants it... Waterstone Sam Hill 2-String Bass 2018 Gold Sparkle https://reverb.com/item/22394708-waterstone-sam-hill-2-string-bass-2018-gold-sparkle?utm_source=ios-app&utm_medium=share
  3. Argh, this is a tempting upgrade to my 435...
  4. Any photos from the back?
  5. Egilegor Basses on eBay. I specified a custom pickup spacing and they were very helpful. It did arrive flat, and my tech radiused it for me.
  6. The Batt-o-meter just checks the battery voltage, so you can continue using what you have now with the security of knowing you won’t run out.
  7. @TJ Spicer Get yourself a Keith McMillen Batt-o-meter and check before gigs.
  8. Ugh, just look at that slab of gorgeousness.
  9. He’s on Facebook. Regarding holes in guard / bass, you can always use double sided tape.
  10. I had the Bass Doc do mine. The quality is great and the price too. I will be asking him to do more.
  11. Yeah most of them are 10lb and up...
  12. Yeah, just got a package from Zero-Mods. Really nice product, plan to get a couple for my pre-CBS Precisions too.
  13. You did say you wanted a light bass though...
  14. Well yeah, these days there are lots of fantastic basses at all price points. There are loads of PJ basses at a fraction of the cost of a P34...
  15. If I wanted a Japanese-made J style bass, I’d do exactly what I did and opt for a Sadowsky Metro (or one of their new MetroExpress models). There’s one in this photo: Oh, and by BB435 was one of two of my basses to get new pickguards. Really like the tort, so much nicer than the cream IMO, thanks @AndyTravis for the referral.
  16. My medium scale P got a new tort pickguard today and a Zero-Mod thumb rest. For those who have been curious about whether one will fit on a medium scale P, well it fits mine (‘84 MIJ Squier). I got a classic one and also the more aggressive V2 which is on my Dingwall Super P... and I think I prefer the V2 so will be getting a couple of those for my 61 and 64 Precision.
  17. After a long weekend of gigs away and a fairly exhausting period in general, I finally got a chance to screw on my two new tort pickguards and also three Zero-Mod thumb rests onto a few of my basses. The tort guards make such a huge difference to the look of the Yamaha BB435 and my ‘84 medium scale Precision, and the Zero-Mod thumb rests open up new sweet-spot tone options for those who like to anchor their thumb when playing. Of the two P ones, I prefer the more aggressively-shaped V2 version, and may get two more for my 61 and 64. The J version fit my Sadowsky perfectly; my medium scale Jazz is on loan to a friend so I’ll have to wait for that one to come back before I see if it can be added.
  18. I’m with you on the C necks, Ibanez necks etc give my left hand cramps in minutes, but both my C necks are perfect - the 64 in particular plays and sounds unbelievable.
  19. The six string version was my first bass, still have and love it. I don’t need a matching five...
  20. I do lots of function gigs and usually bring a five string. Sometimes I’ll bring a four if I know we won’t be playing any of the modern tunes which suit a low B string. And sometimes I bring a six string, like on Sunday doing a duo gig with acoustic guitar.
  21. I feel like I might be tempted to try it at half the price. As it is, Dingwalls seem much better made and designed for the money... I know they’re not headless, but everything else is spot on (and Sheldon has said that he has tried headless and wasn’t happy with the tone).
  22. Bravewood did the restoration work on my 61 and 64. They’re incredible. This is a beauty.
