1. My Peavey T-40. It would probably also survive better than me on a desert island
2. Nice! You can get switches here - that's if yours doesn't use the baseball bat type.
3. So one wonders what the price will end up being once they're released over here. Probably 299 quid...?
4.
Sounds good to me....mind a lined fretless helps me to get closer then it's listening
I had the opposite happen - with a lined fretless, I was crap. It wasn't until I got an unlined one that I actually got the hang of it.
5. It's good to learn bass lines that use a fretless, as long as they're not some mad jazzy free-form thing. That's what I did anyway.
6. Looking at the tuner will screw things up. You have to train your ears and fingers to get things just right - the latter being especially important. After some practice your brain will get into the right gear for playing a fretless. Trying to get things right by staring at a tuner will just cramp all of that, IMHO.
7. Have you tried here...?
8. Looks like there's a toaster pup/rosewood fingerboard version for sale in Manchester at Ebay.
9. Aha! Any ideas what it's there for?
10. A natural wood finish T-40, or an unlined fretless '70s P bass.
11. Seems a bit of an odd shim, especially as the bass has it's own neck tilt functionality. As for pots, mine turn fine. I like the fact that they turn quickly and easily.
12. Lined or unlined?
13. I'm taking my T-40 apart today to give it a bit of a clean and an overhaul. This is the first time I've done this and I've found a feature which I'm not sure about. Do the pics show evidence of bodging, or are these details standard? The brownish-red strip seems to be made of fine sandpaper.
14. You could always try what I did many moons ago - get two normal straps and attach them together. You'd need a sewing machine, but it does the job. The one I made is just shy of 72".
15. If anyone's going near Croydon on their way to the bash, and doesn't mind giving me a lift, I can bring more than one bass.
16. Rather nice!
17. I've got an unlined fretless MIJ 1989 Jazz which is a great bit of kit. I rescued it from a grubby student's flat last year for 150 quid. I tend not to like Jazz sound (but I love how they look), but this is an exception.
18. I think it's actually a rather pleasing way to play. It also works well with fretless playing. Different parts of the thumb can be used to change the sound also.
19.
I'm with you buddy, I'm trying to play Lovecats on mine.
That's a good one to start with, as it has a similar sound to a fretless (double bass, I think). If anything, it's harder to train the ear to play songs on a fretless when the originals are played on a fretted bass. I started with some of the easier Bauhaus and Tones On Tail bass lines before moving onto their more advanced stuff.
20. Practice practice practice, I say Playing a fretless can be tricky to start with, but it pays to persevere. And then one day it just 'works' And this bass is too nice to shut away in a cupboard.
21. Aha - so going by that you and I have pretty much the same measurement, and I think we have roughly the same gauge strings. The reason I asked is that sometimes I've heard differing accounts of what is meant by the action's height.
22. Maybe it's more to do with the sorts of bands people are in? It seems sometimes that in certain types of bands (i.e., ones playing certain genres of music), certain instruments take precedence. I've only ever been in punk/alternative bands and there was never any snootiness at all about the bass - if anything, it was bought more to the fore. But I've heard horror stories from bass players in metal bands (and going by the above posts, some other genres) and it makes me wonder if it's not due to some imagined pecking order within certain genres...
23. Perhaps proof instead that the guys you play with are a bit dim Perhaps it's a genre thing? Perhaps different musical styles have a different approach to the bass player's role, and the perception of that?
24.
Mine are all set up to around 2.5mm at the 12th. Takes some care but it will be worth it.
Can you expand upon that please? I'm assuming this is the clearance you get when depressing the string at both the first and last fret? Or am I barking up the wrong tree...?
25.
Has anybody replaced their scratchplates? The one on mine is very buckled (common ailment!) and i wonder if it's worth getting a new one here... Not sure if you can class the pickguard being like this character or mojo though!!! I love black/black/maple but i'm considering a white scratch and truss-rod cover (I know mister coolandclassic guitars has trussrod covers available) just to be really different!
I think you can get new ones on Ebay for not too much money - less than 30-odd bucks, IIRC.
