1.
Nice G&L L1000, though.
Is that a G&L? why was I thinking it was a musicman sabre......... Oh and that's my grandad. I've decided.
2. Jazzy Toxic Just for you happy jack It's actually half decent at times in all fairness
3. Played toxic with my soul band. the MD arranged a soprano sax and trumpets with harmen mutes to do as happy jack said, the "wee-wah-wee-wah synth" Such a fun song to play, simply because almost everything is really dirty synth. Playing something with that much over-production really makes you appreciate the effort put in to the original song! I used to hate this song, but when we did it I found myself desperately trying to recreate the bass synth sound (which was done on a nord keyboard I believe) on my £40 korg multi-effects pedal...surprisingly fun, probably the reason I can half-bear the song now
4. Thanks for all the comments guys! I suppose in my Warwick naivety I thought of the vette and streamer as the jazz and p-bass of Warwick!! Never thought of the HUGE selection of other top quality basses Warwick have! I've played a Thumb NT 5 before, family friend has one. He brought it over to let me have a play on it once, got some sweet sounds out of it. I'll take advice from some of the posters and try as many different makes and models as possible though. I might need a warwick session in the Bass Cellar some time soon.
5. Welcome. Loving the banjo and the Tokai!
6. I'll say Flea because his style has somewhat influenced the way i play. But in the whole slap debate I say neither are my favourite. Larry Graham is my favourite slapper...old school slap, oohhhh yes.
7.
Go for a Corvette. I'm selling one here if you are interested?
That's a gorgeous corvette! But seeing as a trade doesn't look like an option for it anymore it'll be difficult for me to find the money in the next week or so for it..
8. Thoughts have been going through my head recently... about warwick basses in particular. I had a previous thread which asked for advice on a good, narrow necked 5 string bass. I've been thinking of selling two of my basses Fender 24V and Fernandes Gravity to possibly fund a Warwick 5 string. Owning a Warwick Corvette (even though it's 4 string and fretless), I know that I find it especially comfortable. But I've not got much experience with Streamers Being more of a fender person, I can't really compare which is more suited to me, even though I own a bloody warwick!! So any advice on which of the Streamer and Corvette 5 strings would perhaps suit me better? Thanks for the help James P.S. I know I've posted a lot of pointless "should I buy this" topics even though I haven't followed through with any of them, but I am deadly serious about this one.....I swear!!
9. Hey guys, Long time since I posted on here! Feels slightly strange... This is probably a long shot, but I was just interested in knowing if any other bassists who are members of this magnificent forum have been accepted to this improv workshop Berklee college of music are hosting in Dublin next week? I was accepted and as I said, am interested in knowing if anyone on this site got accepted or even applied... James
10. I once had a very drunk man come up to me halfway through a bass breakdown in my soul bands version of car wash, going "PLAY CAN'T TOUCH THIS" I did it and the whole audience cheered. But then again that was just drums and bass in the breakdown so it was more obvious. As long as I'm having fun I don't really mind if noone notices I'm playing the original basslines to the majority of the songs the soul band does.
11. Seriously nice collection, what basses have been moved on and what do you still have?
12.
Looking good, can you remove the head and use it separately?
Thanks, yeah it can be removed but it looks a hassle! has about 20 bolts securing it.
13. My Corvette Nowhere near as good looking as spacecowboy's streamers but I like it
14. Here's my NEW official gigging rig!!!!! All paid for by myself of course
15. In my opinion... Worst: Bass Center - Advertising Hartke Amps even though according to a rep from Hartke UK, they have no stocking deals with them.. that might have changed now though... Best: Bass Merchant in Essex - Swift, friendly and professional service.
16.
I'm interested in finding our more about this combo. Let me know how you get on!
Sure thing! Once I manage to acquire the funds for the amp, which should hopefully be in the next week, I'll post a Review! Pics and all.
17. Has anyone mentioned walking on the moon by The Police? I love playing that song..
18. Ha sorry for the misunderstanding then! I suppose i should've been more specific with the whole dark thing anyway. Playing in the dark is more of an ear training thing i suppose, (Similar to just not looking at the fretboard when playing), Getting the right intonation incase there's ever a lack of light at gigs and what-not.. then again my bass teacher's crazy (in a good way) so that's probably why he thought of the idea!! But yeah.. good practice schedules are the way to becoming a better bassist.
19.
And the playing in the dark thing? He's having you on.
I was given the tips from my bass teacher, who played fretless exclusively for about 10 years of his gigging life.. I'm not posting to make fun of or offend anyone.. just to pass on whatever small bits of knowledge i have. Sorry for the mini rant, but i just want to help people James
20.
It's not Pino... That's actually a good mate of mine called Andy Coughlan playing a Wal Fretless Pro 1.. He also has a couple of other very nice Wals in his kit bag as well, including one he calls 'Old Bluey' because it's a special one off light-blue colour. A fantastic player, these days Andy does a lot of double-bass work, but he still does a lot of gigs with his Wals, including Cerys Matthews amongst others.
didn't Pino play on the album that song's from though? Surely Numan would make sure the Welsh master of the low end could get on his live tour if he featured on the album they're touring just a thought! James
21.
Geddy Lee on the R30 and Rush in Rio dvds... now that's growl!!
+100000000000 oh how i love rush
22.
i can scan and post on here if you want?
Actually, i could just type the stuff down on here... Fretless Tips -Practice in pitch-black/blindfold whatever takes your fancy, as long as you can't see the fretboard -Practice Scales, use open strings to get an idea of an in-tune scale, then move on to full neck scales once the ear has developed. (.....i was rubbish with scales on fretless ) -Practice intervals - 8ves, 7ths, 6ths, 5ths, 4ths, 3rds, -Play it like a fretted bass. i.e - don't go sliding up and down to the notes because it's possible to do so. -Mess about/experiment with sound envelope by plucking with different intensity and in different positions. -It might say to play the fretless like a fretted, but mess about by taking full advantage of the lack of frets! Reccomended Listening Japan (Mick Carn on bass) - Oil on Canvas Paul Young - no parle Joni Mitchell (w/ Jaco pastorius): Hejira Mingus Shadows and Light - 'Dry cleaner from Des Moines' <- Stand out track Just a reminder, it's all stuff recommended by my bass teacher so i'm not to blame if any of it sounds a bit silly Hope this helps!! James
23. i have the perfect sheet that might help you.. it's one that my bass teacher gave me when he gave me a lesson on fretless. It basically just gives tips on how to practice with it, and some recommended listening. i can scan and post on here if you want? James
24. I've gone a completely different route now guys! Decided to go for a Hartke hm5410 combo... thanks to a handy loan of £300 to pay off the rest of the oncoming amp debts from the parents. I managed to raise the other £600 myself and i'm expected to pay off the £300 too so i'm more fortunate than spoilt if anything! Reviews and pics whenever i decide to place my order with bass merchant, which should hopefully be in the next week!! James
