Weather + Amp delivery = MASSIVE DELAYjamesbass116 replied to jamesbass116's topic in General Discussion listen guys, i didn't mean for this to basically develop into a personal attack on me ok? yes i over-exaggerated.....a lot, but COME ON, i was just venting, my amp's gunna arrive just over two weeks late, sure it's only an amp to you guys, but for me this is a serious investment and it's delay by two weeks is an issue for me, an issue thats nothing compared to all the horrible things that happened to people in this weather obviously and yes i'm still young, but that doesnt mean i haven't got permission to get angry at something. its honestly like you guys think i have no experience as a gigging bassist!!! here's the kicker though, here was me thinking all the guys on basschat were nice friendly people, 'sorry to hear about your delay' kind of thing, obviously i didn't get those cos i sounded like a spoiled brat in my original post... which i acknowledge but if i was 20 years older there would be a different kind of atmosphere in this thread. sorry for wasting your time with this rubbish thread, James

hey guys, this is pretty old news now but i need to fume the last bits before i go back to school. last saturday i had just taken order of my brand new hartke hydrive combo, i was expecting wednesday delivery and i was over the moon that i'd have it over two weeks before the musical i'm doing. BUT NO england decided to snow in, practically ruining all of my plans, this left me in a deep pit of anger and depression. i managed to phone up bass centre, which is where i ordered the amp from.. here's how the predicted delivery time went 'sorry mate, cos of the weather you'll be getting your amp at the earliest next friday' ...............so even though getting time off school was fun and all... i'm without my big investment of 2010, the amp that will undoubtedly be my amp for the next.......well a long time lets say. this will leave me with at MOST 4 days, to play through, find my settings and try to find any faults on the amp before the musical dates set in. ARGH ok. that's me done now, i would like to congratulate mother nature for delaying my amp delivery by at the least, a week. i'd also like to say that the bass centre were very supportive on the matter though, and offered ANOTHER free set of strings with the delivery thanks for bearing my rant! James
What Derren said is right. The majority of Electric Upright's don't even come close to being like a 'real' Bass (I'm looking at you NS). Basses like the Stagg and Palatino are ok for a relatively inexpensive instrument, but don't think of them as a substitute for an upright. Even some expensive models, again, like the NS,I feel are more like vertical Fretless' than uprights. However companies like Clifton (like I use), Clevinger,Azola and Eminence make great instruments, but they aren't cheap. Don't just noodle on one of the basses at school-if they give lessons,go for them. The Upright is a more physical instrument than the Bass Guitar,so it's best to get some guidance on correct technique.
thanks for the recommendations i'll definitely try and get lessons, i get free music lessons cos i do a level music so that's handy. btw.. i have a basic understanding of double bass playing so when i was noodling it's not like i was doing anything horribly inappropriate technique-wise! haha
Errrr... that's a good thing, James. The older the better in most cases.
it would be a good thing, yeah! but they're very old and treated very badly haha

thanks for the advice derren! i guess i'll keep 'noodling' on the URB's in school for now then and wait till i have money for a good quality real deal upright. (i suppose if i'm going to start taking upright seriously i should take it seriously on the real deal like you said!) the good thing is, i can still get an hour of practice on those school basses every day, so at least i'll have some rough idea of how to play properly haha thanks, James

right, i've been playing bass guitar for 4 years but want to get a start on some serious double bass playing. there are three double basses in my school which i've messed about on and really enjoyed playing, even though they're veeeeeeeeery old i haven't got any room for an double bass! so are there any good relatively cheap EUB's out there? would be very much appreciated, as i'll be buying one as soon as i raise enough gig money thanks, James

my '04 MIM jazz has had a vicious buzz that goes away whenever i touch the strings.. i thought it was originally a grounding problem but i've sent it into the shop 3 times and the buzz just comes back. i've read about people using copper tape to settle the problem, but would that sort it? seeing as though it's been so consistent after so many trips to the repair shop it could also be the repairman.. if you have any local london repairman you know of that are good that'd be helpful! thanks James

hey guys, sorry if this is in the wrong place!! after recieving some interest in my amp i was wondering.. if i use interparcel premium specifially, how does the transit cover work? and also how is the price affected if i want the cover increased? would the extra insurance get added onto the £41.99+VAT? thanks i really appreciate it. James

exactly the same thing happened to me! i was doing a charity gig with my local soul band and we were the act before the headliner.....the legendary......TONY..........black..burn.. everything had gone to pot thanks to the local emo/indie band that started the show.. they did about 5 encores? so everything was about half an hour out.. our soul band rocks up, we spend half an hour waiting, we politely asked from the organisers for some more time. we then set up at the speed of light, played through 6 songs and we were cut off because we cut 5 minutes into HRH tony blackburn's set..as we packed up our stuff sharpish. but little did we know mr blackburn was waiting by the stage to give us a lovely, congratulatory message, "thanks for cutting into my time you ungrateful, unprofessional jokes" the whole band had a kneejerk reaction to this, and heckled that ghastly man throughout his set... i would've joined in if i hadn't lost my voice however even though it's a different situation to you.....kinda... there's one thing in common. POOR orginisation!! so you're not really in the wrong because you weren't given exact details, a kneejerk reaction is what can be expected when you've been mislead.. main message - you're gunna get screwed about, but you just have to live with it and move on (and thats from a mere 4 years gigging experience) James
Hi James, By "24v" do you mean a Fender Jazz 24 5-string? I don't know what the string spacing is like on those, but if it's anything like the standard Jazz 5 spacing, it should be amongst the widest spcing around. Most 4-stringers are 19mm and the wider spaced 5ers are usually 18mm. Obviously, you're never going to get the same dexterity from a wider neck (I started my current pro panto run on one of my 18mm Status 5-stringers but changed over to my 4-string Status S2 instead pretty much for the same reason - That the four is so much faster to play, due to the narrower fingerboard & I have some pretty fast and involved parts to play on this particular job). So if your 5-string bass is pretty standard spacing, it's going to be a case of either coping or playing the job on a four. Rich.
thanks for the advice rich, yeah i mean the Fender 24 5 string. funnily enough, i can relate to you on the panto bit, i've just finished playing in the pit band for my local panto, did most of the rehearsals on the 5 but then realised that due to the string spacing issues i would've made a fair few mistakes to say the least, so i went to my 4 string. unfortunately, the parts for the upcoming musical do use the low B, and i don't want to ruin the sound by doing the octave above so 4 string is a miss. i'll probably have to cope with the spacing issues and get practicing so i'm used to the width! right, i've been smothering this forum in my three days of being a member.. but i need some serious help on this one. unlike my other posts.. this is something that has been bothering me for a bit and recently this has come to light. Through word of mouth, the local high school has roped me into their musical production of hairspray, this school takes their musicals very seriously, hiring in professional parts, roping in the 'best' of the local musicians and even selling tickets on ticketmaster! but to the point.....the bass part relies heavily on the 5th string for sections, and as i played through i realised i was struggling to play with the same fluidity i usually play with on my 4 strings and i need to obviously KEEP that when playing from a west end part haha i'm playing a 24v and i think the problem might be the string spacing, so i was wondering if anyone had any recommendations of what to get? i could trade my 24v but after seemingly noticing it's been discontinued i'm not that eager to trade.....for sentimental purposes, unless of course the right deal comes along! thanks guys, James
I like it but I find it very tricky to set up. It's too sensitive to the 'hotness' of the bass so you you have to find just the right threshold spot and right attack speed to get the right tone and avoid it enhancing too low frequencies giving it an unpleasant volume boost. When I get it right, it's awesome and makes me forget my wah, but it's a lot of work, also because different amps and EQs in rehearsal rooms make me have to adjust this pedal every time!
ahhh right ok.. i wouldn't mind having to live with that. i always constantly tweak with my other effects, so it'll probably come naturally for me to change it depending on acoustics etc..! haha thanks!

thanks for the info mark! i checked out a vid on youtube of a guy using the bassiq and it is the EXACT sound that i'm after.. guess i'd better start saving up my gig money! haha thanks, James

thanks for all of the input guys. i got up pretty early today so it gave me some thinking time over what amp to get.. unfortunately i couldn't find the suitable secondhand eden/markbass/swr for my budget, and my afternoon trip to london only convinced me further the hartke was the way to go so i'm proud to announce that by next week i will be the proud owner of a hartke 5210 thanks again! James

i've heard great things about this pedal. i was wondering if anyone has had any experiences..good or bad.. so i can judge on whether to get one also whether there are any cheaper or just better alternatives? cheers, James
Crikey! Your band must get well paid! I've been playing for nearly 30 years and don't have a collection like that!!
haha.. thanks i suppose!! only a bit was with my band....frontman hogged all the money from those gigs.... most of the money was from dep work after my teacher recommended me to pretty much anyone local ha James
Not bad for 16 mate! How long you been playing for?
thanks man! i've been playing for 4 years, but thats with at least 2/3 hours practice a day haha. i'm so eager to get better is my problem i paid for the majority from gig money, obviously my main bass (the MIM) and the amp were presents from my ever supportive parents! James
