1. ohh, forgot to mention I had the pup out and there is still the inspection identification in the pocket...wiring all good too still.
2. Gentlemen, nice bit of nostalgia and a lovely bit of kit in very nice unrestored condition. ....not had this long at all, but as is often the case I have been offered a 1980's BB Yamaha, strangely enough thru a business customer whom bought a Focus from me 4 days after I bought this SB! I can't pass this up old Yamaha as it's a very, very good price, but now have 4 bass's sitting here so it's last in first out... The guy I bought this from has had it 20 years and he purchased it from the original owner, it has a set of Rotosounds on it, that to be honest I don't really like too much, but she plays A1 now it has been set up to my tastes. She has no drama's or unwanted surprises, super low action, no hum, no pot noises and quite a original tone as is the way with old Aria SB's. It now has black Marvel locks but original strap eyes are with it. The 'R' has a slightly wider neck but that is relative for a SB, it has a very racey neck indeed, more like a jazz bass so if you like big necked P basses this may not be for you, ohh isn't at all heavy....but come have a go if you like. It is totally original, not molested in any way and is finished in a lovely Paduak red, with what looks like rosewood fretboard? It doesn't seem to have been used very much over the years, according to the last owner it was used mainly for studio recording, the head hasn't any gigging digs or knocks so sounds plausable, also the frets are in very good used condition (my year old BB414 and VMJ have more wear!) and there are only few small marks on the body, one rear, one bottom...see photos. I paid £280, so asking for money back, no bids please it isn't dear....rather than price it higher and haggle. Any questions, PM me, I'm on Suffolk Norfolk border near Snetterton/Diss/Attleborough.....would rather not post, but willing too if a deal breaker at cost to buyer but will insist on insurance, its not like posting a VMJ that could be replaced tomorrow! I would rather it goes to someone who has a passion for these old SB's, she is a bit special. link to Aria SB site for more info' http://www.prog.rockers.co.uk/aria.htm there is a fair bit on the SB-R60 model.
3. what no A-Ha....bloody 'ell everything I like is 70's 'n '80s...I suddenly feel old...
4. Phil Mitchells son's not in prison he's playing bass!
5. Looks like my BB414, anyone know what the difference is? cheers gentlemen
6. ....I know didn't like these Swing Bass when I bought them just over a year ago, had them on my RBX for a few minutes, hated them and put them back in the box....15 months on I have fitted them to my SB and the G string is as dead as a dead thing can be....I never really understood what people meant by a dead string, I sure do now ....how can it die after a few minutes use, maybe the acids n stuff on my hands have degraded the string or they are just poor strings? Any tips for storing strings? ....I whip my Ernie Ball flatties out every month or so and they have been around every bass I have and they seem like new still. ....new set of Slinky Roundwounds on their way...
7. had a fiddle with the one on loan, has 2 P pups and 1 J....and too many controls for one person to deal with! Out of interest how much are these beautiful basses nowadays to buy?
8.
I'm moving house this week and so have been clearing out all the nooks and crannies. I found a bunch of old photos from 1984ish mostly of an old girlfriend (now suitably binned, got to keep the Mrs on side eh?) but amongst them was a picture of the two instruments I owned at the time, a Washburn Woodstock (a guitar I know, my bad) and my defretted Westone Thunder III. This was my second ever bass and had swapped my first one, a Yamaha BB300, with my flatmate for this one (he still has the BB300). Anyway I thought I'd share this piece of '80s nostalgia with you. As I added another P p/up to one of my P basses not so long ago, this Westone must've left an impression on me somewhere in my brain, I certainly didn't remember it having a P/P config.
wow, I have one these on loan, the StingRay went back and now have a Thunder III fretless, lovely bass got some real loud meow noises too, and sometimes even sounds like a cat yawning .... ....looks very Aria SB too!
9.
Epiphone Thunderbird Gothic or a Black Ibanez SR300 or similar. Yamaha BB414 is a great bass too, and also available in black I think.
+1 on the BB414
10. just needed a bigger tug on my pup, the foam pup buffer had 28 years of sticktion on it!
11. With the aid of the great advice I received earlier I have set up the Aria....neck was spot on, but strings were 3mm too high ....maybe we don't all like a low action? Running a set of 'new old stock' Swing Bass Rotosounds that I simply hate but have done less than 10 mins work on 3 Yamahas and a VMJ and no name thing....I forgot how rough these strings are  Question: I would now like to raise to my pup, I have removed the 4 securing screws and the pup moves around a little up and down but something seems to be holding the pup in...I thought there would only be springs or foam under the pup, maybe the foam has degraded and is sticking to the body and pup? Any ideas gentlemen? PS: I'm actually thinking this bass is too good for me, it's got soooooo much sustain it makes me realise how bad my string muting is ....but lovely fast neck, wonderful low action now and quite an 'individual tone' plus beautifully built.... I find it hard to believe this bass is nearing it's 30th birthday soon. ...I think the pup switch must act as a series/parallel switch, more trebley in one mode and quieter but deeper in other mode....
12.
Nice! Aria's of that period set up nicely. Full job would be to take the strings off, oil the board and polish the frets. General clean up, sqirt of switch cleaner (not WD40) if required - leave alone if pots are quiet. TR cover off and key ready. Next thing is optional but I generally always do it - put a slight "back bend" using a straight piece of box section ( I can explain more fully if required) and back the adjuster off a quarter turn and then, if it is as far out as you say, perhaps pick up the quarter turn and then add 3/4 more. put the old strings on - tune and leave for a while. Sight down the neck and you are looking for a very slight bend. If so, great - if still too much back off the strings and add another 1/4 - tune and check When you are happy with that, you can adjust the bridge to get a base setting. New strings, check the action, then set the intonation with a tuner - too sharp at the 12th saddle back, too flat, saddle forward. My Aria basses are set to around 2.3 to 2.5 at the twelfth and play like a racing snake. Great Basses, I've got one but perhaps a little more "well used" than yours seems to be. Good luck.
wow, what a great site this is! Many thanks for that eric, everything I need
13. My beautiful Aria SB-R60 arrived today, lovely bit of old kit in wonderful condition for an 1982 bass all bar a quick clean but.....the action is higher than a 60's hippy at Woodstock and I like an action lower than a snakes belly in a rut. Allegedly been recently set by a 'professional guitar maker' I'm guessing the trussrod adjustment is under the nameplate on the headstock, FYI gap under E string when 1st and last fret held is about 2mm though if that's important....could be string heights at the bridge...dunno never had to do more than tweak on a trussrod. ....any set up tips and hints on this old Aria most welcome gentlemen, a lady bird guide from 1st stage to last would be great! many thanks
14. VMJ Austin Powers 60's CV v Cool as Shaft '70's funk n groove VMJ styling .......I still have mine, many basses have come and gone but the VMJ still with me. ....I asked the same question some time ago, answers back then, well it seemed the CV is built a little better although my own VMJ is very good (not Yamaha good though, only a Yamaha is that good ) but VMJ has 'better' sound, whatever that means...some said warmer, more 70's funkee'ish'type'thang.... ...VMJ's maybe more consistant nowadays, I know they were selling very quickly at the start of the year, so much so, I struggled to find a one new, my build date was a only a few weeks from when I received it....heck...I'd like and want both! Prices have gone up too, mine was £230 new I think? I don't think you will be dissapointed with either, I have had some very good bassists play my VMJ (well, anyone is better than me!) and they were all amazed at how a budget bass can be so good nowadays, likewise seen no bad press regarding the CV, so it may be down to the look of it at the end of the day....that's how I choose!
15. I'm glad it's not just not me...I would have a jazz necked Ray anyday...very nice indeed what does SLO mean...I would of thought FAST
16. With regret the lovely '86 StingRay 4H I have been lent hasn't been played for well over 5 days now, we had a brief, very passionate love affair but it's ended now... It's not all bad though, it did get me into older guitars, a month ago I wouldn't of touched one, always buying new....now I can see why they have an attraction, sort of like the classic cars that I always have as keepers. ....love the Ray tone and action but it makes my wrist ache, I just can't get on with the neck and found this out when playing some faster bitz, Duran Duran mainly, lots of octaves n quick stuff. Everything else I have have played at length with, has had a sporty neck, my Yamaha's and VMJ...so I'm back fiddling with my BB414 again.....and that quiet G string too wasn't too clever...ducks for cover The guy who has my VMJ on loan has had the same problem but other way around, loves the VMJ tone but can't get on with the racy neck, mentioned missing notes....but he has been playing for some 30 years with a fat necked Fender P bass too. So it almost seems that whatever I started with dictates what I will like later on? I'm fortunate I got to borrow a Ray for a decent time & didn't buy a StingRay or Ray34.... my card was out ready willing and dripping, just goes to show you really do need a good few hours playing to see if you will like something...could be why many bass's are sold on it isn't GAS afterall, and impulse buys should be avoided. So completely forgetting what I have learnt this week.... I have just bought an Aria SB-R60 Paduak Red blind for too much money.....hopefully a racing snake for a neck....well slightly wider being an R? If nothing else it will make a lovely bit of funiture to hang on the wall.
17. lagar cold, bitter warm! Sting was/is the Police for me, and Reggatta' was such a great LP but one of those groups whom for me, the songs were either utterly fantastic or..... .....I'm sure I saw them on the Old Grey Whistle Test...but may have dreamt that, I gota say though some great basslines, and I may have dreamt this also but isn't 'message in a bottle' one of the hardest lead guitar riffs to play.....although anything with cat whiskers for strings must be difficult to play I think I'm gonna be going thru a Police bass week now! He seemed to use quite a variety of basses....Aria SB fretless, Fender Jazz and P bass etc http://www.bassmasta.net/p/police,_the/all-tabs.html
18.
Rio, or anything by Duran Duran!!!
+1

E.g. your videos is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AK9QVN0bpa4 You need the code from "v=". Then you enter: [yootube]AK9QVN0bpa4[/yootube] But with "yootube" spelt correctly. Spelt correctly, it's: Reply to this post, and you'll see all the codes I use.
wow, I forgot this Silly Love choone, thanks! ....this is one of the 1st songs when I can remember thinking "what a great bassline", I was about 13 when this came out...
20.

that Bonfunk Freestyler is a great bassline
21. This is sorta off topic but not.... for me it's bass related! I'm teaching myself bass, in a fashion, by using some great lessons and help available from this excellent site and others but recently I'm having problems downloading stuff, seems to take ages, youtube is also real slow which is pain too and when I tried to have a look at the Incognito thread the Beeb' thru me out as I'm so slow I did some speed tests using BBC and a consumer site test and got around 490 Kbps download and 368 Kbps upload...I'm on BT internet homehub can anyone comment?
22.
I didn't want the cheaper black/red/blue ones, plus I wanted the proper case with it. Highly padded bags are great but I don't use them for storing my basses, just for rehearsals when car space is low. So, I've got what I've always wanted. a Stingray 2EQ in Vintage Sunburst with black plate and rosewood board. EBMM sunbursts and natural finishes are quite expensive but after seeing a sunburst the other day, it HAD to be mine I'll have a comparison video on my to do list now.
same here, I was so close to buying one of the £1,000 ones, great value considering how much s/h ones are, but it's the colours that put me off too and a new bass isn't just for christmas. .....if only they had honeyburst....
