2. sounds nice to me, can you buy a Ray 4 next and report back how much was the aero'

4.
LMAO.........go for it mate.
good stuff isn't it...I have enjoy playing these ones too...
5. it's been just over a year since I started messing with bass now....so as you do, I have been going thru my record collection to pa-pom-along-pa-playalong with. dug out the Midnight Oils or the 'The Oils'...one of my favorite bands, but I really wouldn't want to be the bass player for them, I'd like his talent though )....real Butlins ba dump ba dump basslines...I acutally struggle to keep in time tough ....the basslines seems to work fine though!
6. wow, thanks guys for the help ...E string was way out on the 12th fret octave, too flat, I had to pull my saddle some 4 mm forward to compensate....the A string off too, again it was flat. ...checked my Yamaha BB414, spot on that's Yamaha for you though
7. it could be me....but I'm sure my VMJ is off tune, no isn't me...my ears are getting better now! All my Yamaha's have sounded spot on...but the VMJ is sort of slightly off tone...sometimes...more noticeable after playing the BB. ...I have tuned it with my digital tuner, using the open strings and 5th frets too, ohh, and harmonics sound fine too....but I'm sure there is something not right, more noticeable on the 4th and 6th frets on all strings. any ideas?
8.
I had a black Lakland DJ for a while with a red tort guard & I really liked the look. Something like this:
wow, that is very sweet indeed
9. I voted other....can you get an orange pickguard...no really, the combination really works well...KTM's?
10. we can't let this pointless uberpost die tonight...200 and something replies anyway...I'm lost....one thread mentioned apples and oranges...so is flea the orange and mark an apple ....my orange phones singal is sometimes poor...Mr King is apple of my eye, the core of the thing really is who is the better bassist, has pipped Mark Flea to the post, for those with thin skin...I have run out!
11. well....I never heard this song before until I search for SX SGB bass's earlier....what a cracker and great fun to play too....... then I find it's by Louis Johnson..and then I find that Off The Wall passed me by too...there's me thinking it was only liked by pony luvin, Bay City Rollers fans...there some good sh*te on that LP ...hang on why the ref' to James Jamerson on this vid?...I like this guy he looks like he is enjoying himself?
12. ......that's odd I found this site this morning too... ......the Retrovibe Ray 4 'ThingRay' looks cool too....but at £299 it ain't stinkin cheap! I think it's a rebadged SX SBG2...weren't they banned in the US due to a lawsuit? Specification Model: Retrovibe RAY4 Body: Basswood, White Scratchplate: Black Controls: 2 x Volume, 2 x Tone Bridge: 4-string MM-style, chrome, top-load Pickups: 2 x MM-style humbuckers Neck: Maple, set construction, White Fretboard: Rosewood Frets: 21 Overall length: 1110mm Overall width: 343mm Body thickness:36mm Scale length:845mm (33.27 inches) Width at nut: 39mm Width at 12th fret: 55mm Markers: Mother-of-pearl block markers Tuners: Chromed open-gear type
13. ..£160/£199 new and when a few years old they seem to fetch the same or a bit more!....they have a bit of a following going by Fleabay....so I thought I would have take a look for myself, they look soooo very inviting for a tight wad like me ....well I picked up my first one yesterday....couple of years old, but 'as new' as you could ever get, been played for around an hour, maybe less then placed back in the bag and left in the corner of bedroom....I can understand why now ...I really, really wanted it to be a great bass bargain, aching even, but what a disapointment....this one had nothing in common a StingRay bar the looks...I wasn't expecting a champagne bass for my lemonade money. ...I'm sorry to say, this must be the cheapest and nastiest bass I have ever seen, no wonder Ernie pulled the plug....I mean, the tuners acutally rattled! The fretboard had two high frets so that the action had to be set high to avoid fret buzz, one of these frets I could of shaved with it, the pots had a nasty feel, gravelly yet loose, the nut was a terrible fit, pissed both sideways and sloping and the sound was very....how can I say....thin in very limp way? This bass simply couldn't be played out the bag, it didn't work....a very pretty ornament though. ...I really do love a cheap bass and I had no name £80 Cash Converter P bass loaner that did the job fine, but this OLP is first time I had thought "this really isn't money the money, any money" I didn't even bid the guy. So, come on OLP MM2 owners of the world, was I looking at a real lemon, I hope so and that most are good examples, or is the mere fact that something looks like a Stingray enough for most people to buy one, a triumph of marketing over function?
14. Couldn't find a tab for this....Ok I had a go at trying to tab this by my poor ear... it needs TLC & some 'sexing up' (lots of pops missing) by someone who can play actually this tune! Tab Key h - hammer on p - pull off b - bend string up r - release bend / - slide up \ - slide down v - vibrato (sometimes written as ~) t - right hand tap x - play 'note' with heavy damping G |------------------------------------------------------ D |-------57--------5------75----5----------------------------- A |------------------------------------------------------ E |-----\7--- 3 4 5---35-------5 35-\ 32335-----------------
15.
If you've been playing for any amount of time or are any kind of decent musician you will know the Level 42's records are musically and technically superior to RHCH just by listening.
I sense some bias with a name like rett®oglide1 ...could be a Harley though?
16.
Precisely! The rest of this sentence is all your opinion.....that's t'internet for you.
I did think too.... this is like comparing apples and oranges...but hey, it's sure got a lot of replies
17. crikey, what a thread! Well, I'm totally biased and for me Mark King is still Mr Bass King but then he had a big influence on me, it's I had ever had on my car tapedecks....I still love the older L42/Mark King stuff. L42 were for me my favorite group up to the 'Family' album. Memories coming back now... I first saw L42 at Gillingham Central in Kent, ohh must of been, hang on what car did I have..Ford Corsair.... so must of been 80/81 and then Margate Winter Gardens when the only songs that were generally known were those played by Robbie Vincent and OGWT...ohh and they had just been had just been played on that radio 2 live thing they did every week I think....saw Haircut 100 later same year I think in Gillingham....they had a great bass player too! Up till when I first saw Level 42 live I'm embarrassed to say I didn't really know what a bass guitar was.... coming from trying to play piano very poorly...but I do remember thinking, wow, what a talented guy playing that Alfa red oversize banjo type thing with 2 strings missing and only with his thumb....I also thought the poor guy must of removed 2 strings due to some nasty finger accident to make it easier to play...no really, I did! ...I knew really wanted to play bass after seeing them live....but waited nearly 30 years to pick one up, typical! After a years twanging around with my bass I can learn and 'recognisably in a rough and ready way' play a lot of the funky stuff I liked back then, the Bernard Edwards, Louis Johnson Stomp, Slave, Shalamar ohh and Duran Duran choons etc but I gota say I still really struggle with most anything Level 42...which is why I wanted a bass in the 1st place! .....it's been a quiet week workwise and thought bugger this I will play some Level 42 if it kills me, so have been playing for hours and now can 'do' Are You Hearing What I Hear', The Chinese Way' 'Children Say' and now Love Games.....but I still find it so difficult....but don't know why...can only think it's because my bloody fingers are all over the shop and most of it is so fast for a newbie! ...not quite up to this std yet though.....is this a fretless?...if it is then bash my balls... I'm even more in awe of this guy....he must like his bass enough to have a bass clef tatoo too...I quite like that!
18. ....can someone, in laymans terms explain why you would want/need to use a compressor....and what it is/does? many thanks guys
19. what recent thread...what did I miss
20.
The Yammys keep getting mentioned I've heard very good things about them. Will the 614 (being active vs the passive of the 414) sound more modern? As I say I've heard nothing but good things about their sound, however I find it hard to get over the 'Tellytubby' looks.
'Tellytubby' looks ....I always thought they looked large too....they look bigger in pic's than in the flesh....don't know why? .....I have had a RBX-374, BB-614 and currently play to death my BB-414, they are all very, very good, with a punch far above their weight pricewise and are consistant in build too, you don't hear of bum examples. ....the RBX-374 has twin humbuckers (loud!) and 2 band EQ and I wish I hadn't sold it but that's another storey... ....all the Yam RBX's and BB's I have owned had 'sporty' necks too. ....the 614....I really liked but in the end, for me, had too many controls....I like simple things.... ....the 414 is passive is strangely wamer, has far more gain for a given amp setting setting...ohh, and I can switch from front to rear pups 'on the fly' which is nice..the BB's are PJ's which gives you a good choice of tone. ....but for me, the BB's in Raspberry red or the 'die for' Orange are simply peachy...they ooze 'look at me' quality ...ohh, that's Squier Vintage Modified Jazz next to the BB-414 to compare the size with if this helps? ....those new Vintage and Classic Vibe etc Squier's get a good rep' too and seem very good value for money, I like my VMJ and still have it, which speaks volumes being a Yamaha guy!
21. that's strange....weeks ago when I went on the site too purchase tickets they had all sold out
22. spooky...I have been playing Stomp and Light Up the Night all week...tis good...the tune...not my playing...
23. Thank god for that, I was getting nervy!
24. or is that musicians live fast and die early...or are bassists a different breed? Strange but a professional keyboard musician I met in Spain last year alluded to this as well... for example: Bernard Edwards Tubbs Williams Jaco Pastorius Phil Lynott John Entwhistle Sidney Vicious ....etc
25. ....strange, and I thought I was a real 'soul boy' in my youth but these guys passed me by, some really good tracks and great bass, not technical but solid...if that makes sense? .....anyone know who played bass for them?
