1. I simply love the way my BB614 active plays, super thin neck, super low action and just so nice to play but...it's simply too quiet unless I have the EQ's wound up....new battery, pups at correct height....I wondering now If I should have gone for the 414 passive afterall? It's almost as if the EQ's act as independant volume control? If I go from Squier VMJ to the BB the volume difference is amazing....yes, one is going thru the active channel and the other thru the passive channel on my Hartke but the active RBX-374 never had this issue? Anyone else come across this? I'm assuming everything else is the same on the 414 bar the electronics.....neck and action etc? ...maybe I'm just had enough of active controls, my VMJ is so simple to tweak...?
2. wow, I'm so very greatful guys...many thanks and Mr OTPJ gets a freebie
3. Being new to bass I can read tab (who can't) but thought I will have a go at reading 'proper like music init'...and this sounds wrong to me... I have: E-F-G-B-G-E.....E-F-G-B-G-E....D natural-D-C-C-A-C and so on but there are sharps at the very start of the 1st bar..what do these denote.... too sharp everything on that line (stave)?
4.
There are disco funk bands round here...still stuck in that 80's timewarp but then you can say the same about the Bon Jon Jovi/Queen bands. They used to be very popular and are still presumably viable now. The 50's something set still get out and about for the latter. If blues bands can keep going them so can others Having said that..and I am not a great blues fan.. blues bands aqround here are as good now as I can remember.. Lots of nice players around, IME.
....so if I like classical music I must be sub-timewarp
5.
'Theoretically' you can get done for attempting to defraud HMC&E and lose the bass! Not trying to scaremonger or be a wet blanket but these days the C&E are far more on the ball and they are well within their rights to check the contents of any imported package and if they even 'consider' that you are trying to pull a swift one they are within their rights to confiscate the item and investigate the declaration; if you are found to be defrauding them then you are scr3wed... just saying! With regard to the £ v $ conversion, don't use PayPal!
...had packages checked by Customs, this can delay the item for some time and they aren't wrapped up too well afterwards too...also if you declare/insure for a s/h and they check you will be upset ....customs have experts who know the value of any given US car, no doubt there will be a guy who knows bass.....and with the internet it really is so easy to check. I even had some golfballs opened up
6. For whats it's worth....transpose Fender bass for Corvette or in fact any US car as I have been running them for over 20 years now.... I run a Corvette Stingray and I'm also into Moto X/enduro bikes.....I can buy slightly 'cheaper' across the pond on both counts but, the cost is usually the same in £ as it is in $ once the part is in your hand with post/import charges/incidentals like insurance....and beware customs charges can catch up as long as 6 months later as carriers clear paperwork....been there! ...and, and this is such a big and, you only need some bored/hungover/angry/just for a laugh idiot to post the wrong colour boot carpet liner for a Corvette to/wrong colour bass/left handed/scratched/shop demo one to realise it really isn't worth the hassle, and it's better in the long run to buy from your local supplier...and warranty...forget it! also.....when you need a '79 wheelnut for a L-82 spec alloy/single TI E string on a Saturday afternoon you know where you can get one.

8. Am I alone in this...just been down the pub reading the Essex Cronicle...turned to the live music and over the weekend there are oodles of punk bands, grunge, garage indie, indie/garage/punk/grunge and everything else between and of course folk...but not funk, disco or jazz even... ...strange thing is a funk thread on here gets a great response, turn on most any radio on a car and it's tuned to a pop channel, lots of people I know love Chic, funk or anything dancy...so why no funk pub bands?
9. woh, thanks for that, just up the road from me!
10. I bought an ex-demo amp from GAK....has a knob in-fill missing, no docs or proper box, was a bit dusty and saved £170....I love ex-demo!
11. Anyone know what this bass is?....looks like something made from left over space shuttle bits .....but I like it maybe a little difficult to play seated though....
12.
i've been really interested in flats for a while aswell, heard theres nothing compares to the feel on the left hand, but if you can slap on them they sound ideal but im not a fan of ernie ball strings the rounds i had on my 5 felt rough are the flats smoother? any other flats that are good for slapping?
the feel is amazing, they have a silky feeling and not at all sticky....they can encourage you to do too many slides though!
13. whoops, yes I forgot to add...yes totally agree you can really slap those Ernie Ball flatties too, you get a very bright pop from the G string...I just sold my RBX-374 with the EB's onboard...so my BB614 slap monster is gonna get a set of those Group III's too.....
14. hmmmm, very nice..... puzzled:- ....do they have a thick neck?....I'm no expert but I thought they would be more a slim J type neck....I haven't come across any Yamaha with a thicker P bass type neck?
15. Look into my eyes, look into my eyes, the eyes, the eyes, not around the eyes, don't look around my eyes, look into my eyes, you're under...
16.
Also, if you don't want to be Jaco or Pino... a solo'd P pickup on a fretless is a beautiful thing, IMO. Here's a recording of mine. (folk music warning)
wow, very fat tone...nice thanks for posting that
17.
Thats about right - he might have a tiny tiny hint of a chorus on there (tricky to tell with it being an mp3), he's eq'ed it and maybe even compressed it too. The core tone on there is all about the VMJ, they a re just superb for the money IMO... Here's a snip of mine (having gone through a wide variety of wonderful boxes to make it sound as spanky as poss!):- Tall Trees
sweet....oooh no I think I fancy one...must resist...must resist...must resist.....no need for 4 basses...seem great value at £223.99 new...be rude not too, but I only just got my BB last week! http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product.asp?id=5402 just how much is kidney worth on Fleabay in this credit crunch climate???
18. fretless have my attention now...do they all sound like this VMJ fretless, or this going thru oodles of witchcraft boxes? ....obviously a great player but it's the spanky tone that I find wonderful....
19. this is going to sound like a real newbie light bulb moment but I never knew you could slap with a fretless bass.....I'm sure some guy told me that in Wales last year..... "it's the action of the strings on the frets that makes for that slap sound"...or I dreamt it  Note To Self...don't listen to drunk bass playing Welshmen who use picks I'll get my coat.....
20. thanks again gentlemen.....I left this song for a day or so, and then came back to it and now I can't see why I had a problem...strange?
21. I've had a test drive of both passive and active and bought the BB614 active, I simply like active basses as they are so very versatile...you can make a 614 as warm, thuddy grunty or bright and jazzy as you want to. Ohh, and the bass EQ is simply amazing, also the 614 had a nicer slap tone if that's your monkey. Light bass, very quick neck, and super low action, as you can tell I love mine! ...small world No. 3 I had a guy turn to look at car on Sunday and he has played bass for some 25 years, nowadays in a Thin Lizzy Tribute band....he had fngers like eels. After kicking tyres he had a blast on both my BB...turns out he had one years ago and sold it for an old MIJ Fender P bass, always regreted selling the BB as it was his first 'real bass' but couldn't afford both....his words not mine [i]The Bass That Started it All For more than 20 years, the Yamaha BB Series basses have been the workhorse for great bass players like Nathan East, tony Kanal, Michael Anthony, and Lee Sklar. Through the years, these players have relied on Yamaha's BB Basses to deliver that deep, warm thump that has become the hallmark Yamaha bass sound. Now Yamaha has reinvented the bass that started it all. The new BB Series basses boast all the classic characteristics of the original BBs, from the distinctive big body design and bolt-on neck to the vintage-style hardware and soapbar and split-coil pickups. With the addition of state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques, the new BB Series is destined to become an instant classic. The BB414 and BB415 feature a beefy alder body with a bolt-on maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. Electronics include a ceramic soapbar-style bridge pickup, a split coil neck pickup, a toggle selector switch and speed knobs for master volume and master tone. The BB614 and BB615 upgrades to an active 3-band EQ, a pickup balancer, and chrome controls.
