1.
I've seen a guy do perfectly excellent stab at Jamerson's What's Going On bassline and half the comments are morons telling him that "it's nothing like Jamerson" or "you need to get better rhythm" and "what the hell you thinking not recreating every fill EXACTLY how the great man did it (even if Jamerson did it differently every time he played)". What do people get out of this act of belittlement?
what a crap thread, never seen such poor gramma' but there are real funny comments..."great playing! But i was really distracted by your "roast" peeking out from underneath your shirt, so i will give you a 4.5" Yup exactly know what you mean X100.....example: saw a really good vid of a guy doing Everybody Dance clean, no effects, now that is one tough cookie and he gets slated by some guy who has zero vids of himself, what a t*t!
2. ....sure sounds like his touch 'n sound to me, but maybe wrong, I know that Nile Rogers can play bass too?
3. Yamaha RBX series are light and way under budget...maybe worth a look, at the very least it can't hurt? RBX-A2 is only £400-500
4. I know I'm gonna sound like the idiot I am...but what are those doorstop things for that sit below the G string for on these Vibe series....some sort of carrying handle
5. found this by accident trying to tab this song, such a great bassline, played on a P bass....there's me thinking anything that is funky and slapped must be played a jazz bass? ....I can finger play it but slapping, forget it, it's too quick for me on the f#/g# D string bit! "Original bassist/co-composer of the song forget me nots demonstrate the way to play the Unique bass line! Sometimes you don't waste time at soundchecks While waiting for mikes and Keyboards to be plugged in, why waste a good groove ! With a rhythm section like that who could resist. 6.
Study bass is a good site. http://www.studybass.com/
I agree sir, great site
7. I saw a blues band whilst house hunting in East Harling Norfolk...ohh and ferret racing the night before....now I didn't think I liked blues, but I do now, they were great! I think they were the Dave Thomas Blues band with a bassist called Stuart Aitkins and a drummer/acoustic guiter guy called Rusty Floyd..may have the names slight off, appologies if they are....what a talented bunch of guys. ...nothing unusual about this, bar ferret racing, but whilst waiting for the band to set up in the little club I clocked the guys bass and thought "that is a Jazz"...."no it isn't" "yes it is"....bugger this I'll ask the bass player god. well, what a nice guy Stuart is, from Glasgow, very friendly, apparently it's a Fender Jazz bass (mexican I think he said?) but with a fat as f**k rear humbucker pup grafted on.....lovely smooooth sound.....first time I have seen/heard this combo. is this unusual?
8. Slightly different angle....it's all win, win, win for me. I love the bass itself as I'm a funk boy at heart and love my toys, but also I'm an engineer and simply love the strictly functional look of them, the build of them and just how incredibly affordable they are for the amount of time and fun I can extract ...for example, someone gave me a Nevada 4 string last night, I think he paid £80 new for it 1 year ago, it's a P bass cosmetic Fender clone....but it works, sounds fine, it can handle Rio by Duran Duran and all for less than a night at the Indian for 4....it will last years....my other hobbies, my Corvette Stingray, my enduro race bike all cost £1,000's....I last drove the Vet 3 weeks ago for the 1st time in 2 months, the bike hasn't been ridden since November 2009! My Squier and Yam' get played before I go to work, and when I get home , mostly every day....so I love the playing too.... I love the music, but now I have a bass, this bass is now an 'music enjoyment multiplier' in office speak......learning the bass has made feel quite humble as regards the talent of pretty boy musicians from the 70' and 80's et al, and how music is 'built' and now I can't listen to anything without thinking about the bassline....I was at my mechanics yesterday collecting a Jag'.... Upside Down by Diana Ross comes on the radio and I tell the boys it's the Chic player Bernard Edwards on bass, most likely playing a Stingray 4 string, and the bassline is THE song...now I'm a music/bass geek!
9.
'Dogs of Lust' - The The...
top recommendation ...gona give that a go right now!
10. is he playing a stingray with a rear pup..I really don't know? Whatever it just don't sound right....great playing though and effortless, whom ever is?
11. right, well, erm after all that no one has tried this, or wishes to admit to it
12. I notriced Hartke aren't on your list, there maybe a reason for this? But the Kickback 15 is in your budget, Hartke gets a very good rep most of the time. ...I have a B-900 and I'm very, very pleased with it, lovely build, silky controls, good docs, lovely tone ticks all the boxes for me
13.
hi iconic, great bass guitar, wow , im going to music collage to learn bass guitar, in kilburn high rd, perhaps we could teach each other, rod
..................if you are going to music collage.....you WOULD be teaching me!
14. Just a thought....nice deep Chic low tone but a nice bright G string for funky pops? .....there maybe a very obvious reason why this isn't done though
15. sorry, my VMJ is fretted! I only ask as my Yammy RBX blows the doors off with flatties but still has a 'little' brightness on the G string. I will try a set on the VMJ but as it's a jazz and I like to have a little 'twang' on my pops....just wondered if the flatties kills the VMJ tone completely....best I try some I know....am I making sense?
16.
I always wonder about the bassline in Dancing Queen- last chorus over "See that girl, watch that scene diggin' the Dancing Queen" bit. Its always played with a C♯ passing note between the D and B- last chorus he plays a C♮and try as I might I have to play it whenever I do it otherwise the 'right' way sounds wrong!
this guy agrees too about the bum note on Dancing Queen
17. just had a 2 hour session at home with the PC loaded 70's and 80's songs, the newish VMJ, the new amp and little limoncello on the side, then plugged in my old (10 months!) RBX-374 with Ernie flatties and ohh, my god, I really miss that hard deep bass hit, that my VMJ lacks....I love it all over again! ...funny thing is last year I said to my mate who has 3 leads and 2 basses....why would you want more than 1 guitar....
18. There are number of Squier Vintage Modified Jazz owners here ...anyone fitted some flatties....how do they play...dull as dishwater , or nice and fat but loss of the octave funky pop? cheers guys
19. wow, I never knew what basslines were in those ABBA tracks, good fun too
20. wow, cheers guys for the speedy replies and info'
21. My mate who is a banjo player has bought one of these...a Charvel in black, 3 picks ups, passive, it's made in Japan, seems very old, heavy and has a great fat tone, bolt on neck...looks as this one in the pic'...he gave £50 for it ...he simply wants to know something about them?
22. that's quite humbling, so much talent it hurts, thanks for sharing that...I can't even slap my bass without all sorts of noises coming out the speaker that makes my cats ears pick up in pain...and you can pat your's and make it sound wonderful!
23. I took a chance on an mail order Squier VMJ...and it's perfect outa the box...was only slightly out of tune.....all more by luck I should add, I have read horror stories, but does sound more like your's was damaged in transit. ...I simply can't put it down, even the kids say it looks cool and sounds great....only thing was there was no user manual, a set of allen keys but no user manual...unless they don't have them, but I'm used to spoil me Yamaha stuff. ...strangely as a newbie I find the neck easier to 'read' in the lighter colour, than my all black RBX...but picking the yammy up I still think it's a work of puka craftsmanship
