3. I haven't got a bad problem playing (you may well disagree!) but it's this damn GAS I suffer from. ....we have a 09 MIM P bass, Yamaha BB414 p/j (racy P neck!) VM Telebass single mudbucker (racy P neck, super light bass!) VMJ (racing J neck boat anchor heavy) VMJF (racing J neck with tapeworms!) chinky P bass thing on flats...and 5 other basses that have come and gone! .....so I have different necks and positions where my arms/hands/fingers naturally fall, rounds/flats/ tapeworm stings... .....I was thinking this choice can't be good for improving bass playing, as I never seem to play the same bass for more than 30 mins....bit like learning to drive and driving 6 different cars....can't be good? .....I see guys with but the 1 bass, and think I wish I could be like that, simply play the same bass day after day so you know every little thing about it...sort of like just one best mate rather 5 good friends....? .....I reckon my GAS problem isn't so much the different tones, I simply like the differing way of engineering a bass, and the fact I think basses look so good... ...any thoughts? Keep one in the open and lock the others away maybe?
4. There's one in my anorak bass book, it 'looks' like a simple 90/91 MIA Vintage Series P bass re-issue of his colour combination of sunburst/tort pickguard/rosewood with dual pup guards, tug bar, ID'd neckplate and a bit of paper saying what it was, there isn't even a unique headstock sticker on the front as far as I know... and 100 off made by agreement with his family. as an aside, I thought he simply used a regular bass (basses!)....with flats so high you could limbo dance under them, and as both his main basses were stolen it isn't based on anything special?
5. this is a simpler version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GZcX3vkrlA...feature=related
6. I can help, I play this a bit, not a great std though, a truly great bassline....bit tricky though...this may help? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2KuCXCVjS8...feature=related PS can you help with Level 42 43!
7. ....surely this is a job for Sherlock Ohms.....he is afterall, bit of a bright spark! sorry, but all the those electrical jokes you guys are generating, you wore down my resistance to take this seriously, but this really is the best current thread ...I'll get my coat! Hope this does get sorted, and it's a simple misunderstanding afterall

9. isn't this very, very cheap....?
10. what ebay fiasco?...you can't leave it at that we love fleabay stories!
11. I just put Attitude into Fleabay and found that Rick Astley now poses for, well erm a certain kind top shelf mags....
12. 'strange to me' serial number....so after a little digging around AMXN + 6 DIGITS beaks out as California Series bass, '97 and '98 ....they were a mix of US and Mexican parts/assembly (pianted in Mexico!) P/J with mex jazz neck with neck end rod adjustment...looks OK to me, but I ain't no expert!
13.
Ha Ha, me too! I failed to see what the joke was! Truckstop
...me too!
14. If you can't find a BB414...(there was white one n fleabay a short while ago, cracking basses)...be my 1st choice too if money's tight, or.... ....alternatively try a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz...sounds and looks like a funk machine...finger or slap finger: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spYUJDgutkA...feature=related good slap: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=616RZyAwEy0
15. looks lovely, such a simple, clean, classic look, enjoy her. it's only fair you do a youtube video, playing something to match the era.....Sam and Dave Soulman for instance
16. Now, I didn't know that......seems a little sinister
17. PS if you want a not so classic fat as f*$k P bass sound, go telebass
18. +1 for MIM P and the Yamaha BB414...for classic warm typical Pee sounds, I'm biased I have both. haven't played the VMP but if they are up to the VMJ and VMJF I have, they will be good, the CV P I tried was good too.... ...if I had a £200/£300+ it would be the MIM or if you want a little more range then the BB414...that J pup will give you more fun..but hey, you already have a jazz and P's should be basic, no faffing about with batteries 'n stuff, simple, simple, simple, a volume pot and a tone pot that normally is set down. The MIM's I've played do the 'should be' simple, but sometimes 'hard to achieve' job of being a good P bass as intended and does it well..also, any parts are a breeze to get hold of should you need them.
19.
I've had no real complaints about mine - well built, solid and dependable. Sure, I had to tighten a couple of screws, but I've done that with more expensive basses:
wow, that's a good looking bass, mind you so's the one above....if this is turning into a PIMP my MIMP....here's mine!
20. Just lately.... I simply don't understand why I sometimes see some harsh comments regarding the Mexican Fenders....I do see just as many that say they are good bass too, but some seem to think they aren't a proper Fender or worse? Bass snobbery? I have a few decent bassists play my MIMP (I don't include myself!) and all thought she was lush. I'll own up and say straight off I have only played 3 MIMP's, an older Agarve blue P bass, a real beater black n tort (90's) and my MY 2009 Lake Placid (thanks Tom!) and all were/are great tools. My MIMP plays soooo well and she has good solid and sound build quality, a so very comfy body, lovely smooth proportioned neck, hot pups and importantly, there's nothing I feel the need to change on the hardware/sound side, cosmetically I fitted a different scratch guard and pup cover, that's it, don't feel the need to change pups, pots, bridges or anything else, she sounds just dandy. I sometimes see comments like "buy a Squier rather than a MIM" and I simply can't see it, I have Squiers, they are great basses, but they don't cut the precision mustard for me, lack the overall feeling, the simply rightness & niceness of a Fender MIM, I don't know, theres something very 'touchy feely' about my MIM in LP and Maple. My Yamaha BB414 is amazing for the money, but she ain't a MIM and does have a more mass produced aura....silly, absolute crap I know, they are all made by the tens of thousands but so were 50's, 60's and 70's US Fenders and I'll stick my neck out here and say with modern production techniques a MIM is most likely a far better built and more consistant bass than an old US Fender but will never be hyped as much or worth as much? I don't even think MIMPs are that expensive for what they can be had for new at £450, that ain't gonna the bank for a decent playable P bass and with recent price rises for the Squier's and Yamaha's I reckon they are pretty decent value. Also, the US v the MIM posts from Mr Circle of 5ths across the pond and others close to Fender production tell us something of the inconvenient truth about how closely related both the US and Mex Fenders are regarding parts, construction and who build them. I just sold a Jeep to a bass playing US airman (wow, could he play!) and he tells me the MIM snobbery I see here, well, he doesn't see it in the US, a MIM is simply a low priced good very useable Fender with good s/h residuals. I do read that the model year 2009 onwards are supposed to be a big step above previous years, and accept that maybe that the old ones I fiddled with may have been peaches, and I have only been into basses for 2 years now.... ......but why diss the MIMP's?
21. I have never seen pine used before, is that common?
22. guilty as charged m' lord...but in mitigation it's not just me, but my kids too..but we only talk to the smiley players and only after sussing them out from the bar. ... after they have set-up, played and then sit around for the crowd to arrive, if they look bored we I dive in and the youngest comes along too if he is feeling plucky....he still find's a real stage bass player up there with anything that a superhero comic can offer....but then again so do I as a home noodler. ....at the local bar where they have, a fair bit of live music, we always play "guess the bass" on the way there....winner gets...well, the bragging rights and kudos of being the premier bass anorak of South Norfolk for a week or so.....we do try to 'do' the rigs but the kids are real loosers at this game, so ain't worth the time and trouble strangely....we have only seen one Fender in 9 months and that's the lovely '79 P bass of my friend, tis all Stingays, Yamaha's 'n Peaveys 'round 'ere like........ ....I must add, that we have always found that the bass players, whom I chat too, are always real bass enthusiasts (or very polite!) where as the 'castrato' players seem more matter of fact about their guitars, it's a tool to them...but then I have found that bass players seem more into the engineering, looks, tones of an instrument and are a little more experimental....don't know why, may just be me?
23. I can watch this guys for hours, check out his Get on The Floor and his strange tuning...can tell what it is yet?
24. "I've seen several recommendations for Yamaha, either RBX or BB. However, I'm really after an unlined fingerboard and the Yams, AFAICT, are all lined. " ..I think I may have assumed you were new to bass (bass lessons in 1st post)...those 'cheater lines' on the Yamaha's and Squier VMJF's do make the fretless a lot easier to play....well they do for me
25. great thread.... ...gentlemen, don't ever go into selling used cars for a living... I could bore you all day, but some recent highlights, buying and selling stuff on here is a breeze! 1/ calls at midnight, the one time you don't switch the phone off 2/ calls from people wanting to know the colour....MOT....engine size etc....but you are looking at the car as we speak on your PC and would their mother like it...." bit hard to a say, I don't know your mum..." 2/ test drive every Focus of 6 to choose and then say hmm, I'd like that colour, with the lowest miles, with that ones leather trim, with the ST alloys, with the room of the estate but looks of the hatch and at the cheapest price....baring in mind there was a 4k spread 3/ why do I still make this simple mistake..... "help yourself and have a look around, ask any questions".... come back after 5 mins to see how things are going, and customers gone:- .....as was the Jag radio, the spare Mondeo wheel, the service history from a Focus (why?), the gearnob from a Alfa, the cargo cover from a Focus estate, sunvisor from a Jeep...and the strangest ever was one rear headrest from a Jeep....it's like a breakers yard around here! 4/ "there's one down the road cheaper"...well go and buy it then...."ohh, it's a cat C write off, since repaired" that'll be worth putting the wife and kids in then... 5/ this was a classic..."I've seen better cars for more money"....erm I'm sure you have! 6/ "my last radio used to get radio Madrid, this one doesn't, I'm not happy"......."and you've since moved back from Burago in Spain" 7/ people who do actually kick the tyres...I always ask why they do this though, I love the embarrassed look, even offer to do it free of charge...do they really think I'd sell a car that fragile that a wheels would fall off? 8/ often get bids that are 50% below the asking price....or the "what is your best price"...."£4,800"..."but that's £1000 more than the asking price"...yes but it's MY best price!" but sometimes there is a god, ohh yes.....one guy, Mr L who bought a tidy but old 80K 2002 Focus...had it 2 days, rings back proper slagging me off f this c that....this is rare for me, I really don't get calls that often from buyers....honestly!"the clutch pedal's got a squeak, you can hear when the engines off and you turn the fan off....my mate knows all about cars he is kitchen fitter afterall and says it needs a new clutch @ £900 and he can do it"... "I'm sure he can but a new clutch is £98 with £120 labour to me, but a pointless conversation as a new clutch won't fix the sqeak, Mr L its simply a dry pedal bearing, common after a very long drive with the heaters on...a 2 second spray with WD-40 will sort it for ever, better than driving 240 miles for me to do the same"......more f this and c that.... "best you bring the car back I'll refund the money" which he agrees to (!)....I then sell it again for £300 more next weekend to a neighbour (after WD-40 on pedal bearing!)....then Mr L rings me back 2 weeks later to say he has changed him mind and wants the car back again, it's the best he has seen for the money....more f that c this when I say it's sold... ...then the best call of all from Mr L after a month goes by...."hi Rich" note the first name terms now..." I got my self a nice Focus, I bought a 54 Focus 1.6 Zetec with 35,000 miles for only £1,700" "ohh that's nice Mr L...I gota say that's very, very cheap, so cheap you must have stolen it!" "anyway Rich, me old mucker...a guy with a towtruck and the police have turned up and they want to tow the car away saying it's someone else's and they ain't paid the HP and sold it on, but I paid for it and I gota receipt, they don't seem to understand Rich, you know all about cars, you tell them".... " Right Mr L so you bought a £5k car for less than half price....you are married aren't you Mr L" "yes Rich" "best tell the wife she needs to work more overtime at the sandwich factory, cheers" ...I'm sure anyne who deals with the public at large could tell loads more I don't think I would buy anywhere else than BC
