What music did you or your wife walk down the ailse to?
Conan replied to FuNkShUi's topic in General Discussion
The intro to "Heart of Lothian" by Marillion! Mrs C (mk II) was born in Edinburgh... "At church" by Novak during the ceremony - which is ironic as we weren't married "at church" but in my in-laws garden in Fife overlooking the Firth of Forth and Bass Rock The bit from 1.55 on here... Trading and selling on Basschat seems to have dramatically declined
So whereas Basschat would have been my first port of call previously, now I am put off by the fees in view of my comparatively cheap items!!
I admit that I hadn't really thought of that. I guess one decent sale of, say, £500 more than covers the £20 but if all you have to sell is small or inexpensive items (I don't like the word "cheap" as it implies poor quality ) then the fees do seem disproportionately high. I'm still sticking to my view that £20 a year as a membership fee represents good value for all the fun and information available on here. If you see it that way, then the selling becomes free! £20 a year is less than 0.5p per day. How many of us are on here every day? Would you balk at a charge of 0.5p to log on? -
John Entwistle at the Bass Weekend in 1982 (Recording)
Conan replied to reds42's topic in General Discussion
I was at the '87 one, and recall travelling down to London on the bus and seeing the devastation of the "Michael Fish" storm... but that's another story! In fact, I have a cassette recording of it somewhere I think! Entwistle was there in 87, as were Rob Burns, Tim Landers, Joe Hubbard, Paul Westwood... all the usual suspects. As it was at the height of Level 42's popularity, everyone was plaing bass like a typist but I do recall some very tasty Goodfellow basses... It's all a bit hazy though -
Glen Hughes' advice was "If you ever make a cock up just make sure the audience doesn't notice."
I heard a better version of that one, which I believe is attributed to Wilko Johnson: "If you make a mistake, just look brash and the audience will think they heard it wrong!"
Perhaps a membership fee of say £1.00 per year would help BC survive? Just a thought, shoot me down in flames if you must.........
No flames here! If that generated enough income to keep the site going, and led to more traffic through the for sale sections - then I'd be all for that. But surely we would then have complaints from people who have no desire to sell anything and regard this platform as something that exists for their benefit? It's an awkward one and I don't think you can please all of the people all of the time. -
I have not seen anyone being impolite, (apart from in Conan's post above)
On reflection, you may have a point there I am not as erudite as Messrs Del Var and Fumps when it comes to getting my point across. I believe it is a Taurean characteristic, so blame my mam. I didn't ask to be born you know... And I think it is fair to say that nobody actually wants the fees. I'm sure we would all rather that the service is free. But that didn't work and I can't see it working in the future. But yes - the word "twats" was probably a bit strong, and I apologise for that. Although it was more an expression of exasperation than an attempt at name-calling. -
This is one of the stupidest things I've seen written on BC for some time and I won't be apologising for holding that opinion.
Suit yerself mate! I'm reading some rather silly comments in this thread too. But I suspect we're not talking about the same things... Also, it wasn't suggested as an entirely serious strategy Nobody is forced to be a member of this site. Nobody is forced to sell items on this site. So why anyone would complain about a fairly nominal fee to allow that selling is beyond me. Seven quid to sell one item? And then you keep the entire selling price rather than having to "share" some of it with the site that allowed you to sell that item? -
Plus the lower horn of the SR really digs into my leg... most annoying.
Does this mean that you do most of your playing in a sitting position? Could that be a factor? I know that I find it much more awkward when I play sitting down...
Worth remembering that the fee was introduced because only 4% of sales generated a donation. If more of us had slipped a few quid in the kitty, then the fees wouldn't have been needed.

I was genuinely surprised when i saw how few sellers actually made a donation. It was inevitable that a fee would have to come in with so few making a donation.
Yes. I find it sad and annoying that so many "members" were happy to join up, sell some stuff, then piss off into the ether again with their bulging wallets. From the stats above, it is very clear that a lot of the regular membership saw no problem with using this site as a platform to sell their stuff and not paying for that service in any way Maybe the list of donors should be published? Name and shame? But sadly that is the nature of modern society. Get what you can and screw the rest. "Survival of the fittest" Gits. -
Yes don't sell it, ever. I've had all from new, 2 compacts, midget and a super twelve T and stupidity made me move them on. And now I'm on my 5 th barefaced and hope I don't get stupid again.
Never mind - your altruism means that many bass players have been able to try Barefaced products at a lower price and without the waiting times! You should be rewarded!
It's certainly good for what it is, but what it is isn't particularly interesting.
Well, it is to me! I think your comment would have benefitted from an "IMO"... That said, I do think that this live "extended" version doesn't actually improve on the studio version of Runnin'. Maybe he used up all his good ideas in that 1:27 or whatever is was?

I have bought and sold a moderate but significant amount on here in the last few years. When I sell something I make a donation. When I buy something I trust that the seller does this too. In the last few weeks I have bought a bass, sold a bass, traded a cabinet and an effects unit. Not bad for the middle of a recession! I think the amount of trading has increased as it involves less cash changing hands and means people can try other gear when they get bored of their own or fancy a change. I would have paid the £20 just for the privilege of having access to BC! It is a brilliant resource even if you never buy of sell anything IMO. As a paid-up member I can buy, sell or trade to my heart's content. But then I'm a glass-half-full kind of guy... -
Dave margen had a top sound with santana.
Good call! Great P tone - just the right side of "farty"!
Jonas Reingold. This whole track is just... basstastic. I think I want to eat his tone.
I almost never sell gear on, so the resale value difference doesn't bother me.

Another thing to consider is resale value.

Yip - I'm hangin' on to mine.
I spotted that! Just as well - there have been a few times when I have seriously considered that bass! Still, it will look and sound great the next time you are jamming with your mate Knopfler!

At the time, I was looking for a new cabinet and spotted someone selling a Markbass 610 on eBay. I spoke to him and he recommended this place! His name is Shep (onbass), so you can blame him!!

Not so sure about the new PG... but that is one stunningly gorgeous bass. And I am not normally a big fan of Precisions! Howard is a very clever chappie, and you have excellent taste Mr D!
She must surely have had, er... surgical assistance? I don't remember her tumblers being that hefty.
I think that top would give me a cleavage to be proud of!
I think the used market will become oversaturated with signature models over the next five years (especially high-end stuff; Will Lee, Bob Glaub, Roscoe Beck etc) they'll be discontinued; and then wait another 5 years and that's when you start thinking about selling! Truckstop
I think the Roscoe Becks may be worth a risk... They get excellent reviews, there aren't too many around and they are no longer made, they can be bought very reasonably now. In twenty years time? Hmmmmm...
I get a lot of questions about the avatar picture . It's this maths genius and personal finance expert :
Wow! I thought it looked like her facially, but had no idea she was so, er.... endowed! Anyway - thanks for the info, and sorry for the thread hijack!
