1.
Little bit nervous about potentially breaking my cabs...
If you run a 500W head through them, with every control on full, then this is a genuine risk... but when would you ever need to do that?!? Presumably you get enough volume with your current set up? As you talk about only needing one cab on some gigs, I would assume this to be the case. 500W seems to be kind of the "industry standard" at the moment. However, some manufacturer's ratings are pretty unreliable and, added to that, the power rating is not necessarily a good indication of volume! It gets really complicated - which is why the best advice is to use your ears! If you have a taste for technical stuff, have a read of this: http://barefacedbass...er-handling.htm and this: http://barefacedbass.com/technical-information/mythbusters1.htm At the £400-500 price point (second hand) you have loads of choice. If it was me, I would look at a Hartke LH500 or even LH1000. Loads of clean, clear power. More volume than you will ever need. If you need some dirt/grit/drive you can always add a decent processor (SansAmp type of thing) with the rest of your budget. A used LH500 will usually be around £200. Good luck!
 2.
the 'loop' on the rubber bit splits at the end and then when the strap gets extended to its full range, gets caught on the metal cap and doesn't sit flat.
And that, in some people's eyes, equates to a "failed cabinet"?!?
 3.
Some speaker systems are designed for use in swimming pools. That's not a reason for storing cabs in a pond.
Quote of the year!
 4.
A good rule of thumb is to go to a well attended bass bash and check out how many players are better than you are.
Up to a point, yes. Some people are very good at showing off their chops in front of others. I personally am not. When I warm up at a band rehearsal or play/practise at home I am pretty happy with what I can play. But for some reason, put me in a room with other bass players (even just one of them!) and I am suddenly bereft of ideas and can't think what to play!! I feel very self-conscious. If those other players were to judge my playing on that basis, then they would definitely put me in the "beginner" category!! I'm just not a natural show-off I guess!
 5.
Any less than that and I'll hang on to them as a spare set
Just to prove myself a liar.... I'll take twenty quid!
 6. For me, any of his stuff with Bobby Womack, Anita Baker, Philip Bailey and George Benson.... His CV really is scarey! Is there anyone he hasn't played with?
 7.
You're not intermediate until you know the names and positions of all the notes on the fretboard and the difference between a major and a minor chord.
That seems rather arbitrary! Are you quoting from some published set of standards there, or simply making your own judgement? Not that I'm saying it is wrong, just interested from whence it comes...
 8.
That`s the main thing, irrespective of claimed handling or technical know-how, let your ears decide.
This! So much depends on the amp you use and the settings you dial into it. Turn up the "bass" control and most cabs will struggle to provide you with much useful volume. You will also muddy up the overall sound and have problems hearing yourself. Reduce the bass and add more in the midrange and you will be able to go "louder". You will also be more audible and probably fit in better with your band's mix! That said - Behringer gear is not exactly what you might call "top-end". It can do a job if you don't ask too much of it, but if you want a cabinet (or more than one) that can handle high volume and give you a decent sound - you will almost certainly need to upgrade to something better (and, sadly, more expensive). Such is life.
 9. Why do we always feel the need to pigeonhole and classify everything we do? When I joined this forum I thought I was a pretty decent player. Since then, I have seen and heard people (who are ordinary members on here) whose playing is WAY beyond my ability. Or so I thought. Then I go away and try to play what they just played and, after a few hours of noodling and trying different things, I can usually make a pretty passable attempt at it (apart from double-thumbing ). I think I am at the same level as the OP. No reading ability and only a very basic level of theoretical knowledge. I would like more, but with a full-time job and a family it is not top of my priorities list! I have played in a number of bands in hugely varied genres over the last 30 years, and have never been the weakest musician in any of them. I am respected not only as a player, but as a reliable contributor to every band I have been in. That's not me being smug - it is just the facts. I have a huge amount to learn, and look forward to the journey (if I can be arsed to make it!). I would put myself at the top of the "Intermediate" category, and and possibly just getting into "Good" on my day. But it all depends on with whom you are comparing yourself, doesn't it?
 10.
They take the Fender design and make them better.
Yes. Fender make good basses that are certainly fit for purpose - but there is a lot that can be (and has been) "improved upon". So why is it that so many players that have owned Sadowkys, Lulls, Alleva Coppolos and the like still come back to their old Fender Ps and Js? Another point for discussion...
 11. Just been listening to Selling England by the Pound... the section in Cinema Show featuring the keyboard solo is hairs on the back of the neck stuff. Brilliant!
 12.
Alex - are you alive?!?
Hopefully, he is busy making cabs and not wasting time on the internet like the rest of us!
 13. How much would you be able to get if you sold your Orange gear privately? The EBS cab retails at around £500, but would you get anywhere near that for your guitar stuff? If not, then the trade would be a good deal. But if you could get, say, £400, and could then browse the for sale section on here with that much cash in your pocket - you would have a lot more options. With your lack of transport, I would definitely recommend a used BF Compact. They do actually come up pretty often on here, but usually sell within minutes! There's one here - just to prove me wrong! http://basschat.co.uk/topic/213156-barefaced-midget-t-and-compact-for-sale/page__p__2159846__hl__compact__fromsearch__1#entry2159846 You could easily bring it back from London on the bus and/or train!
 14.
Not very up on all the types of fender jazz basses so I don't really know what makes this bass 'special.' hopefully someone on here would be kind enough to elaborate this point
To quote: "Fender American Special Jazz Bass is one of a new range of bass guitars for 2011. Fender American Special Jazz Bass, offers a host of stunning features coupled with what can only be described as awesome build quality. And the best bit about this particular bass guitar is that the American Special Jazz Bass delivers all of this at price that's just hard to believe! Fender American Special Jazz Bass features a slim neck profile, with a high-gloss finish plus the amazing Fender Greasebucket tone circuit, which rolls off highs while maintaining low-end definition. Other features include an alder body, the classic C-shaped maple neck with rosewood fretboard and medium jumbo frets, two single-coil alnico Jazz Bass pickups, vintage-style black plastic Jazz Bass knobs, 3-Ply Parchment pick-guard, vintage-style bridge and strap buttons. A deluxe gig bag rounds out the package and makes the Fender American Special Jazz Bass an instant classic." Except that this one clearly has a maple fretboard... They currently go for around £775 new, so it is not surprising that you didn't get much interest at £700! This seems a much better price.
 15.
Just been offered an ebs classic line 212 in a trade, what're people thoughts on that as a cab?
Not familiar with that particular cab - but EBS make some very good gear. A trade for what, if you don't mind me asking?
 16. Oh no! Another one of the greats leaves us A damned fine musician with a pretty unique style. Bugger.
 17.
Not sure I can think of a situation where 2 Compacts can be justified
Aaaw, I'm sure you could if you tried a little harder...
 18.
I just noticed this too: http://basschat.co.u...nd-412-s-cover/ Worth consideration... trully awesome cabs. And 4 x 12 plus around your budget...
Definitely! South London to Brighton has to be do-able... if he would only post it I think I would have made an offer myself!
 19.
I'll sell you a bargain 2x15
I hope you're not talking about the Vintage there Si... IMO, amp and cab combinations are extremely variable. Add to that the way that our ears all work differently and you have a real problem with strangers offering advice!! Give 'em a try and trust your own ears. £100 for a cab is a pretty good price on the face of it, but it depends on the cab. You should still give it a blast before buying, even at that price. If the sound (with your amp) doesn't please you, then it is money wasted if you buy it! It is definitely a buyer's market at the moment and there are some real bargains to be had - especially on here. Maybe instead of deciding on the speaker format you want (4x10, 2x15, etc), try looking within a certain budget and see what is around. You may find that a 2x12 (for example) comes up and you like it and can afford it. Try to be very selective when people start telling you that you need "tens for punch" or "fifteens for bottom" etc. Any decent cab with decent speakers in it should be able to give you the sound you require. And yes, if you are careful, £100 may be able to get you something worth owning - but only if you buy second hand. Where in Scotland are you? There are plenty of Basschatters in Scotland and Northern England (myself included) who would be happy to let you have a try of their gear to help you in the process of finding what you like...
 20.
Rotosound Swing Bass that was usually coated in a layer of chip fat , Reliced strings would need to be treated with the right kind of chip fat
Only beef dripping will do. None of your hydrogenated vegetable oils for me thanks.
 21. No. New and zingy for me thank you!
 22. What was it about the "vintage" (how old was it?) J that you liked? By looking at a second-hand one on here you may be able to get closer than you think to your budget price.... Oops - I take that back. I see that you are already exploring that avenue! Good luck!
 23. What if it is a five string tuned E to C? What you mean is that you play a lot of stuff below low E, and you need a bass player who can play that. Which can be done on a down-tuned four string BTW...
