I'm struggling in my new band to get the sound I need with a 15" .
Just out of interest, what do you feel is lacking in your sound with the Compact? And what makes you think you will get it from a 212? This is quite relevant to me as I did the same thing, buying a Genz Benz 212, but quickly realised that it didn't give me what I wanted... In fact I lost a lot of what I already had!! If you like the size and tone of your Compact, but maybe crave more top end - have a look at the TKS H115, I was very impressed when I tried one. There is one in the north east that you might even be able to trial.... just drop WaterofTyne a PM!
You can get the best of both worlds by getting, as Luke says, an ACG. I'm sure that Alan would be happy to build a more conservative bass.
Good point. A lot of bass/guitar makers (as we don't seem to be calling them 'luthiers' these days...) like a challenge. If there are things you like about Wals, Overwaters and Laklands (among others) then a quality maker like ACG (or Shuker, who others rave about) should be able to combine the features you want to get a bass that is "you". Buy a Wal "off the peg" (as it were) and you may be several thousand pounds lighter in the wallet but still be frustrated by what you see as its shortcomings...
Email Fender with the serial number. They'll probably be able to help you out.
I did and they did! Just in case anyone was losing sleep over this.... It was apparently made in 2006.
I should be using a chorus, can anyone recommend any reasonably priced ones?
I've got an old Ibanez one that I don't use... PM me if you are interested

These are fine pickups! http://www.seymourdu...1104405_06_149/ But I had a set of Wizard Hammers that I wanted to put in my Marcus Miller J bass, so out came the SDs and in went the Wizards. The SDs were already installed when I recently got the bass in a trade, and probably a bit too good to put in my fretless J copy... So here they are for sale at £80. Trades are possible, but I would prefer a straight sale. Pics to follow, but they look just as you would expect! After all, they are pickups - not a guitar! Here is a stock pic in the meantime, but it only shows a single pickup, not the pair. They do not come with the SD box either.

Fender Ashtray and Neck pickup covers on a jazz bass
Tried them for about 5 minutes but they seemed to everywhere I wanted to be. Thumb rest came off too, so now they're in a safe place to go back on if I sell the basses.
This. -
Great stuff! Thanks for posting that. Not got time to listen to it all now but will do later on In fact, just ordered it from Amazon!

There are some very cheap bass strings available - do a bit of a search on here, there was someone posted a link a few days ago to someone on Ebay selling strings at a FIVER a set! At that price, you can afford to experiment. There are also some people (me included) selling used strings at very good prices!
You need another Jazz.... possibly one with an active circuit to boost all them lovely mids... natural finish... possibly named after a well-known American jazz-funk-soul sessionman and songwriter... maybe even made in Japan for a change?
Can't think where you might find such a bass..... Or I have a couple of very nice TKS cabs I could trade?
I'm quite open, to be honest. Or maybe... GASP... a PJ. I dunno, but that's half the fun, isn't it?
You need another Jazz.... possibly one with an active circuit to boost all them lovely mids... natural finish... possibly named after a well-known American jazz-funk-soul sessionman and songwriter... maybe even made in Japan for a change?
The whole thing is dull. People who defend get called fanbois, people who don't like them feel they're attacked when they put across their (sometimes ill informed) view. Boring. Let's talk about something else.
Agreed. I think this thread (and the other BF ones currently running) have reached conclusions. I should stop reading them. I should. I really should...
An amp and cab comfortably managing the volume I need is the best rig for me.
Yeah, that's what I thought...
Perhaps I just read too many of the 'HiFi' opinions in a row!
I think some people (myself included at times) have been guilty of using the word "Hi-Fi" to mean slightly different things...
Maybe you can explain what you mean by that?
Well, there is clearly some "history" between you and Alex Claber. You have alluded to that in other posts (like when you said you put a cloth cover on the front of your Compact and he didn't want you to, for example). You questioned his attitude when, as a dispassionate outsider, I could see no evidence of "attitude" in his post above. Maybe you were expecting some? You say that you like BF cabs, but you have some clear ideas about what you see as their short-comings. That's cool - but you do kind of bang on about them. Again, that's cool - we know you are not a fan of the build quality!
BF cabs... are probably overkill in many situations! Most common amps people are using won't push them to the limits, and the popularity of the 212s suggests people underestimate how loud a single-driver cab would go, clean, driven by the right amp (or I guess they don't have the right amp).
Is it a Good Thing to push any cab to its limits? Some people prefer the twin and multi-speakered cabs because they are taller. OK, dispersion may or may not be better - but sometimes, having your amp higher off the ground is a priority as it makes it more accessible without having to put the cab on top of something and lose low end... Just an observation.
-
I see your attitude hasn't changed...
The only "attitude" I'm seeing here is yours.
I don't see why a cab needs to be THAT light.
Because it can be? You could turn that viewpoint round and say "why do other cabs need to be THAT heavy?".
-
You can sound as "old school" as you like with Barefaced cabs, the 69'er and S15 for instance.
Yes. My Vintage was very "old school"!!
Look how much BF gear comes up in amps for sale... we are almost to a man (and woman) a right fickle bunch of gits.
Indeed. I can't believe that I nearly sold my Compact to fund the purchase of a Genz cab! Fortunately the buyer was very understanding when I changed my mind... Why is it that we can be sublimely happy with our gear, but still look at the ads section and be tempted by stuff that is less good than what we already have?? I need to play more gigs so I have less time to spend in Basschat's marketplace!!
And are these block inlay decals any good? as I wasn't sure whether they would rub of and look really shabby with playing. Thanks in advance
To me, they looked and felt almost like the real thing. And for a fiver you can't go wrong if you like the look of blocks (which I do!).
Yes thats it!!! They feel like slow worm / Millipedes..
More millipede than slow-worm IME... and I used to have pet slow-worms too! Call me a masochist if you like (I can take it... ) but I like the rough feel of Roto 66s... keeps my finger-ends tough. They can be a bit hard on the frets though.
