1. To the OP: If you don't mind me asking Rich, how old are you mate?
 2.
Don't misunderstand me, I actually like a good Fender (poor QC..but there are good ones out there)...but I refuse to be a sheep.
I don't see how playing a Fender makes you a sheep? I've played and owned lots of basses (though there are still plenty on my "to try" list!). I currently own two Fenders because I like them - not because they are Fenders! For the same reasons that I didn't like my Spector and why I don't like any of the Rickenbackers I have played, or Gibsons. But I love my Status - so maybe I am more like a llama than a sheep...
 3.
'Twas an awesome bass, but the novelty did wear off after a while lol.
I can imagine!
 4. Thanks for the input folks. Most of you are backing up what I was already thinking. BTW, @Yorks5stringer: I have no concerns about the seller at all (except that he drives a hard bargain! ). It is the bass itself that I am unsure about. I love the idea of trying one, but don't want to end up with a "dead-end" instrument that I can't sell or trade on in the future. I've done quite a few trades recently, and although I've enjoyed playing all of those traded basses I'm still to find one that is a "keeper". Until I do, I reckon I'm safer with basses that have a large potential market. Although I though that with my Spector Euro! I'm still in two minds though! My band have talked about doing a couple of "unplugged" or acoustic gigs. The guitarists have acoustics and obvioulsy the drums are acoustic. I though it would be cool if I was acoustic too...
 5.
there's an increasing number of people on the forum who, to my mind, push the limits of what is reasonable behaviour between two private individuals.
Eek! Hundreds of people are now thinking "I hope he doesn't mean me!!". That's a pretty damning statement. Do you have evidence or examples of this type of behaviour? Back OT - one potential problem area is when trading. If there is no money changing hands there may be more of a tendency to skimp on the shipping. After all, it can't be charged to the buyer. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I personally regard myself as responsible for any item until it arrives in the buyer's hands undamaged. Then it's their problem!
 6.
It's all there isn't it?
Yep. He's got the lot. In spades. Seems a really nice guy too. There aren't many bass players that have total mastery of their instrument, but he does. Makes you sick, doesn't it?
 7. I just saw the "bass guitar" bit...
 8.
A bass is either good or it isn't. Only you can decide, and it's got nothing to do with its country of origin.
This. I've played a few Fenders and Squiers, and my favourite three are: 1. My MIM Standard Jazz bass. Even the pickups are great! 2. CIJ Geddy Lee Jazz. Everything was just right - although by the time I owned it the pickups had been replaced with EMGs 3. My CIJ Marcus Miller. Like the Geddy, immaculate build quality, feel and sound. Honourable mentions to a Squier CV 60s P bass that I tried out pending a potential trade (thanks ghostrider!) and my old Squier Affinity P bass that I sold on here a couple of years ago. I haven't played many US Fenders, but they have all been OK. For the extra cost I expected them to be better than the CIJs, MIMs and Squiers - but they just weren't (IMO). But as others have said, you really must try a Fender/Squier before you buy!
 9.
I'm not sure I'd agree with this - I met up with another bassist once and I broke my foot.
Shouldn't have kicked him so hard then, should ya?
 10.
If you've got your Precision set up to Fender specs & it sounds great to you then it'll probably sound great to everyone else.
Good point. It's hard to make a P sound bad really.
 11. Me likey!! Any bass that blends the better qualities of Alembic, Fender, Wal and Warwick (visually anyway) is fine by me. Tonally it is very interesting too. Sadly for me, I'm a larger gentleman and it would look like a toy on me. I'd love to try it though! Quite a conservative design compared to some of his others...
 12. What a cool request! I'm a bit far up the road in Newcastle, but there are quite a few Basschatters in the Teesside and North Yorkshire areas - I'm sure one of them will be able to help you out!
 13. Mickey Rooney was married to Frank Sinatra? Nobody tells me anything! BTW, tattoos aside (which I don't even like on people, let alone basses), I like the look of that bass - especially the matching headstock. It looks classy.
 14.
A sure sign of getting older for me is that 99% of signature models released are made for people I've never heard of.
She used to be married to Frank Sinatra I think...
 15.
in order to dip my toe into this murky and slightly dodgy world of vintage, so called vintage, fake vintage, Chinese vintage and the rest, I figured the safest and most easily verified way would be with a Fender.
Shall I tell him? Be careful. Be very, very careful. There seem to be more shysters and con-artists attracted by vintage Fenders than any othe type of guitar/bass. If you don't know what you are looking at/for, the potential to be ripped off is enormous. There are some very trustworthy people on this site. Might be worth a PM to one or more of them before you start looking seriously. Seriously! If it was me (which it wouldn't be as I have neither the cash nor the nerve to swim in these shark-infested waters!) it would be a 1966 (YOB) Jazz in three tone sunburst/tortoiseshell Classic and classy.
 16.
Nice bass. Aren't these near to £1,000 new?
Thomann are currently doing the fretless version for £880 - without the upgrade that the one on here has. It is certainly a beautiful bass, but as I say, a bit of a gamble for someone who has never even played (never mind owned!) an electro-acoustic!
 17.
Whatever level you buy at..... Legend, ReBop, Euro or US you won't be disappointed.
Well.... I was disappointed! I really wanted to love my Euro but its ergonomics just didn't work for me. Excellent quality basses, with fantastic tone - but the shape was the thing that I just couldn't adapt to. I kept going back to my Status and J basses and they felt like old comfy slippers in comparison. YMMV of course. As cetera says though, you can pick them up for pretty decent prices on here second-hand. In fact someone local to me is selling an NS2000 for £100!!!
 18.
I hate the sound of them with steel/bronze strings,
Pardon my ignorance... but what do you mean by "the sound of them"? Do they have a characteristic sound?
 19.
I'd say a lot depends on how much the bass is as a Furch 61 isn't a cheap instrument.
http://basschat.co.uk/topic/226959-fsft-furch-61-cm-acoustic-electric-bass-pricedrop/page__p__2348595__hl__furch__fromsearch__1#entry2348595
 20.
Now, I didn't even know that brand new Fenders were being made in Japan. And this looks like a different body shape to what I recognise as the classic Fender style, i.e. it has 90 degree angles to the edge of the body and a flat front (like a Ric), as opposed to contoured. Who produces them,
Aerodyne-type slab body shape. Looks great but can feel uncomfortable to some players. Fender Japan still make a lot of instruments, but many of them stay in Japan (they might show up the US ones!). Some are made as export versions. They are generally very good, with excellent fit and finish. Some find the pickups a bit "polite" though... So if it is what it claims to be (you never know with ebay) then it is a genuine Fender. It looks a lovely bass!
 21.
they're rarely loud enough acoustically to be played without an amp,
I did think about that. Particularly for the lowest notes...
 22.
if possible try it out and see what you think
That's the problem - it's in Belgium
 23.
a stack-knob Jazz in blonde, WOW.
Nothing like a well-stacked blonde...
 24. Just after some advice here.... I have been offered an electro-acoustic bass guitar as part of a trade deal. I have never played one before, so I am a bit wary of proceeding! Is there anything that I should be aware of, or that I should watch out for with an acoustic? They seem to form a very niche market, so if I don't get on with it it could be rather difficult to sell on. That worries me a bit. On the other hand, it is a chance to try something different with no financial outlay.... The actual bass is a Furch 61 CM. I am torn. Please help me decide!!
 25.
I have had to consider this one, especially with those fab upgrades. Although it is tempting, I am going to have to pass as I've recently bought a 75 Jazz bass. Cheers anyway
No worries! GLWTS Lovely colour!
