  1. Just to add to the discussion - Last week i bought a bucket list bass for me, the most expensive bass purchase thus far in my bass playing career, in a 1998 Rickenbacker 4003 from bass Bros. Answered my queries regarding neck dimensions quickly, delivered quickly and expertly packed. Ive bought a few things over the years from them both in person (Ashdown fliptop valve amp) and online (p basses mainly) and never had an issue.
  2. Another thing I have had with eBay recently, having sold quite a bit of gear these past few months with a rig rebuild, is they now want my National Insurance details as I've hit their threshold. Apparently if you sell more than £1,700 annually they will now ask for this
  3. Is it your old pedal or one you were watching? So far with the ric at house volume it does definitely fatten up the sound and the Drive option does a bit of breakup when digging it. Look forward to trying it at rehearsal volume with both the P and the Ric
  4. So recently I've discovered a guitar repairers very close to where i live that i never knew about!?! Paul Gatley - PSG Guitars - in Radcliffe, Greater Manchester. He has just done a very quick turnaround set up on my Rickenbacker and as i picked it up i left my P bass with him. Great knowledgeable guy, quick turnarounds and great work. I can definitely recommend
  5. Being a P bass there isnt too much that can go wrong. A full new harness would be about £30 and other than that the only thing it could be is a loose/broken pickup wire?
  6. Having been a user of the Cali76 compact bass pedal i always fancied a try of the bigger TX version but prices are astronomical! This popped up on Richtones secondhand section the other day and a bit of research suggests it may be in the same ballpark. Look forward to giving it a blast, particularly with the Drive setting!
  7. I'm not a million miles away from Chorley. If there's anything I can do to help....
  8. So this is my current wiring. Looks like the cap is already removed? Just the two caps in there
  9. Ill have to check mine tonight. Mine is a 1998 4003 model
  10. Todays light reading threw up this old post which has peaked my interes:- Check and see if you have a .0047 capacitor in-line with the bridge pickup. Most 4001/4003 Rickenbacker basses do. To fatten the sound of (pre-2011) 4003s this capacitor needs to be removed or bypassed I'm led to believe. It acts as a hi-pass filter on the bridge pickup cutting off the lower frequencies. Apparently the latest 4003s have a push-pull setup on one of the knobs to engage and disengage this capacitor, giving what they call "Classic" (ie. trebly) and "Modern" (ie. full) sounds. This capacitor is missing from my own 4001 (it was gone when I bought it second hand 20 years ago) and it sounds awesome! Somewhat "fuller" than my Fender in fact.
  11. Thanks all for the advices. Im toying with the idea of a programmable sansamp so i can have one setting for the p bass and another for the ric with a higher gain and tad more bass. The ric is off to the setter upperers tomorrow for a set of Elites Groundwounds on (hoping the high tension doesn't affect the small amount of tail lift but that's another story). Early days yet but ill persevere
  12. So first rehearsal tonight with the ric and to be honest i was a bit underwhelmed. I ditched my pedals years ago and go straight into an Ashdown Spyder head into a Barefaced 1x15. The P gets a lovely plumby bottom with a slight breakup, the mids are throaty and growly and the top is open but beefy. The ric was thin, hollow sounding and got lost easily in the mix. Now granted it does need a set up so ill hold judgement but a quick play with pickup heights didnt really help, the neck pup is maxed height wise and i just wasnt getting enough beef. Ill try again after the set up but im wondering if ill maybe need a pre amp pedal for the ric to get a similar beef that the p gives? Im also aware that ric v p is apples v oranges. I just expected a bit more body and timbre
  13. Thanks all. Still tinkering until i get get it to my tech. Currently im easily getting the nasally snarl but struggling to get much low end. Ill need to have a play with pup heights etc but feels lovely to play. Maybe the lack of lows is coming from being a habitual P bass/flats player
  14. No, no push pull pot on this one
  15. Not sure if the toaster is original or not? Serial dates from 1998?
  16. So I've been pretty much a full time P bass/flats player since i started in bands. Ive had a few flirts with Jazzes and once upon a time a burns bison bass but always come back to the P. Over the years I've had a few basses I've always loved the look of a few others (i still think a Spector Euro in Gloss Black and gold hardware is one of the best looking basses) and had mixed reactions when finally getting hold of them. Now, my main 'always wanted' bass is an original Ric 4005 but finances just cant justify even the reissues but i developed a ric itch. Fast forward to last week and my daily trawl of the usual sites took me to Bass Bros where the had a few ricks in. I love fireglo but to me the newer ones have a sort of 'washed out' or 'bleached' look. Then i saw it - a 1998 Ric 4003 with just the right mojo and for what i thought was a reasonable price - i had to have it! Today, after being ordered late Friday evening she showed up in her rickenbacker hard case and she looks absolutely glorious. After years of P's ill need time to adjust and ill need to get her off to the fixers for a set up with my usual strings when they are in stock but here's a few teaser pics in the meantime.
  17. So....i ordered the Ric from Bass Bros....

Ah, noice! Hope you enjoy it! I keep hanging my nose over them, but never have a use-case for one. I'd be interested to hear how you go on with it.

Same year as my mapleglo. Should sound like a dream and play really well if it's half as good. Do enjoy.

  18. i have one and its stupendous, totally changed my mind regarding Barefaced cabs
  19. Recently bought this to stick behind my amp as backup to my P bass at gigs. However, the wife has finally signed off a dream purchase to scratch my rickenbacker itch so this goes towards the funds. Really nice bass this with excellent tuners, Bassline PJ Pickups and what looks like a slab rosewood fingerboard. Ive strung it with my favourite Elites Groundwounds which give a great growl but also a nice fundamental. Ive also swapped out the cheaper looking dome knobs for more traditional flat top ones. There are no major dings or dongs and everything works as it should. The one caveat i will add is this is not a particularly lightweight bass. Ill dig the luggage scales out but id envisage it is around 9lbs+ I currently have no means of packing this but that may change in the near future. As such at the moment it would be collection from Bolton or usual basschat meetup. I use a dual gigbag so dont have a case/bag for this though i could try and source a cheapo one if needed. Any questions please just fire away. Pics will follow asap

  21. This has been my daily drool recently https://www.vintagebassroom.co.uk/basses-1/p/1972-fender-precision-sunburst seems a bit overpriced compared to a neater looking 72 on Andy Baxters site but still has me looking longingly daily 😍
  22. If im looking at an old 70's valve amp and it doesnt have a DI Out im sure ive read somewhere you can get a stand alone DI that goes in between the speaker out lead and the cab or am i completely making that up?

Yup, not in series with the cabinet, but can be connected in parallel or daisy chained with the cabinet. There's several on the market and, even Darkglass' Element pedal can be used as one (up to 100W) - meaning that you can even install a cabinet emulation (along with EQ and a whole host of other parameters) post amp to then feed off to your recording device or PA system. It's not a dummy load though, so this one will still need a cabinet attached. Dummy loads do exist too, I reviewed the Sequis Element: https://www.bassgearmag.com/bassic-review-sequis-motherload-elemental/   and Darkglass Element a while back:

I've used a Palmer "The Junction" PDI 09 for years for this and have had good results. Really does sound like a mic'd amp IMO and one gets the power tube character in addition the the preamp tone. Solid piece and I like that it's passive. It does have several attenuation settings and ground lift, if needed. As with the Darkglass (have not used it but would like to try it) it's limited to 100w (I've used with '64 Dynacord Bass-King and Ashdown Little Stubby). As Dood says, it still has to be used with a cab as it does not have power soak/dummy load function (Palmer and many others make those).

      I've used one of these:

      https://www.canford.co.uk/Products/21250/20-031_EMO-E520-DI-BOX-Passive-1-channel-with-earth-lift

Rock solid construction, but absolutely no frills, amp sims or anything

  23. The staining is on the front tho. It kind of seeps through and leaves a darken patch on the front of the strap seemingly staining it
  24. Really random one here but..... A few years ago my wife treated me to a rather expensive custom made strap from Bear straps. It a lovely thick piece of dark brown leather (smells amazing too). On the underside it is a smooth suede finish that seems to absorb sweat and leaves a darken patch on the strap. Ive tried various leather cleaners and waxes etc but the suede just soaks up sweat and has left me searching for alternative solutions before ditching the strap. One thought it to buy some waterproof fabric stick tape to apply to the underside which may or may not work but wondering if anyone else had had similar issues?

    Cab covers

Definitely Hot Covers for me, cheaper than Roqsolid and for me better. The 'basic' hot covers ones are the same as the 'padded option' roqsolid but much cheaper
