1. Why not just add a speaker cab, then you'll be using your amps full power and moving more air? You can slave two together, I've done it in the past and it's been fine - either use fx send or line out, just be careful that the input to th e2nd amp isn't overloaded.
  2.
Hmmm, I can't remember whether the dial that controls the valve section is a mix 0%-100% valve tone or whether it's 0%-50%, i.e. the dial brings it to the same level as the solid state. You can turn the valve stage on and off though, and the amp works in both modes, so I assume the valve isn't totally dead. Eee, and I thought I'd only be worrying about the valves in my guitar amps
The valve dial on your amp controls the amount of gain the valve cct gives. So the further to the right it is, the more gain and the more clipping. It's a "drive" level rather than a "mix" level. I reckon the valve will be fine, it'll just be the sh1tty Sovtek stock job. You could do worse than a Raytheon or Svetlana in there instead (IMHO of course!)
  3.
My band Whitelime are playing at Guilfest this year on the Liveclub stage at 2:15 on the Saturday. View festival lineup here We have discounted festival tickets which we can sell to you for the following prices: Day - £35 Weekend - £80 Weekend Camping - £90 If your interested PM me! All the best Chris (formerly funky_bass_guy)
Cool - enjoy! We're not playing this year coz we're going back to Serbia that weekend (we think.... watch this space)
  4.
However it might be worth replacing the valve it if it's old. Don't pay someone to do that - it take one minute and is dead simple!
Yeah, especially in the TE 12-band amps! I did it one afternoon to play and it was fun (Chris, thanks again ) The stock valve is a Sovtek and I have to say I never liked it that much or thought it did much positive to my sound. Now I have played with some others I changed it for one which is much fuller and grittier and nicer....
  5.
Beautiful, do you have names for them aswell I love the Grooves
Hehe, I don't actually. I used to take the piss out of a friend who named all his basses so it's probably a little hypocritical of me

So, to catch up from where we left off... OBBM is checking out ACM and will keep us in the loop - cheers Dave! I'm checking the Harlequin in Redhill as another option We had about 40-odd people showing interest I think - post here to remind us who you are and keep the ideas coming in!!
  8.
you could use the speaker off your combo to your head and keep the volume at 0.
Good point, well made. I'm stoopid!!!!

    WELCOME!!
Finally came accross this thread ! I think the outlook is superb - all we have to do is make sure everyone gets accross before basschat gets terminated. The future is bright, etc...
Basschat or basstalk? Pedantic? Eye?
  11. Soopoib. I think I'll try it and just keep the volume firmly on zilch. If it goes bang (which by all accounts here shouldn't happen!) then I have plenty of back-up amps for the time it takes to fix it
  12. So, aside from the Vester J copy which was my first bass, all my basses and amps were born in Colchester or the surrounding area. Hurrah for Essex! Retroactive J - the newest and sexiest addition to the family Groove 5 Groove 4 fretless TE amps - a V-Type Combo, AH300-12 head, 2103H cab (and a Retroactive coz it's so nice!) All the basses covered (ahem)
  13. Aye, I see whatcha mean. I think the sound I have in my head for one song is very much one with no speakers colouring the pre-amp sound, if you see what I mean, and I think the TE head will do it perfectly. I'm referencing lots of my favourite bass sounds on albums at the mo and trying to find out how the bass was recorded, one has the perfect sound for me and it was a DI'd 12-band TE preamp!! I can give it a whirl and see where we get to. I may well try the Ampeg SVX software too coz I have heard such good things about it. Cheers :-)
  14. Indeed it does, just worried about frying the power amp if I don't connect a (speaker) load to it. According to Rich and DaN it should be OK if I keep the volume firmly planted on zero :-)
  15. Me at the Clapham Grand earlier this year: Me with someone considerably more attractive in Serbia last year. The girl isn't too bad either:
  16. Merton - someone with not enough money and not enough talent but that doesn't stop me using up both Just got a nice shiney black Status Retroactive J, it's the dog's dangly bits. So, I play Status basses thru TE amplificators in a function band and an original pop/rock band and everyone wishes I didn't.
  17. Here's the thing - can I DI my Trace bass head in the studio, using it as a preamp basically, but not plug any speakers in to load the power amp? Will everything go bang? Got some recording coming up next week and I'm gonna have fun experimenting - gonna be mic'ing up the V-Type combo but for one song I think the 12-band preamp would sound sweet. I know I could just take a cab and not mic it, but there are a few reasons why I'm against this: 1. means carrying 3 basses, a combo, a cab and an amp head about half a mile from carpark to studio 2. the studio is only a little one in a residential area so the minimum noise I create the better (but for the combo it's OK!!) 3. while I love my TE cabs for live work, I think they lack "something" for recording the sound I hear in my head Anyhoo, stooooopid question now asked, please feel free to laugh at me and throw me a dunce hat whilst pointing into the corner. (This is also on basstalk, just thought I'd put it here as well for a stoopid early question to be saved for posterity and to help other people )
