4. damn, if only this thread had popped up a few weeks earlier. my bros drum teacher told me he'll give me £50000 if i got rythm stick nailed by jan 19th lol. obvs he wont give me the money, but i'd still have been happy to be able to play it by then. and i got exams this week so havent really got time to get this nailed by the 19th. anyway, thanks a lot for that transcription! thats gonna be very helpful
 5. its a stingray i think
 6. can we not just do a poll and vote on it? at least thats a quick and easy way to show whether people want one, rather than having to trawl through everyones opions and having to count them. i'm not saying the poll should be a decider, thats the mods or admins or whoevers job, but at least then they know fairly simply whether the vast majority of us want it or not. oh, and i'm a room to room guy, to. i don't use the view new posts tool.
 7.
As I am a beginner (no problem with being referred to as one) and a BC newbie, I thought I'd post to express an opinion. Well actually, I'm going to quote from page 1 as it sums up what I'm worried about. I've seen this happen on other non-bass forums. People with the real knowledge and experience don't learn or find anything interesting in the "beginners" section and so stop visiting, then the only people left to answer questions are other beginners. No disrespect to other beginners, but what we know (or think we know) needs to be balanced with the opinions of the more experienced. I can appreciate its sometimes intimidating for beginners to post in the main forums; and I can also appreciate it might be tiresome for you pros to read the same basic questions over and over. But by being able to ask a question to the whole of BC, it gets a more comprehensive exposure; and the more experienced players who might not actively go looking to impart their wisdom often seem to read these threads and can't help posting. From what I've seen this results in a lot of useful info and discussion. This forum is currently great for beginners; one of the best I've seen in way too many years of being a web forums user.
well said.
 8.
damn that's an ugly guitar!
i dunno, i like it in a wierd way.
 9. i like the natural best of them all
 10.
I have a USA 75 jazz reissue and the pickups are fantastic..(depending on what bass you put them with, the best pickups in the world wont make a bass made from balsa wood sound good).....as for the machine heads, they are as good as any i have come across, bridges not so chunky. A squire Jazz may be a great way to go, i guess trying one out is the best option..The Lakland IMHO, is in a different league compared though..Longer scale length of the Laky, may be a deal breaker mind... What about a second hand MIM Jazz? Must try a squire jazz out, heard so many good things about them..
i wasnt trying to suggest they were rubbish, but people upgrade them for much better pickups/machine heads etc.
 11. yeah, fender parts would fit the squier, but why bother? fender pickups arent great, nor are bridges or machine heads. the squier CV and VM series are supposed to be excellent build quiality. and as for the VM series being more popular, thats because its a lot older, the CV series are fairly new. i'd say go for the squier over the lakland, personally. i wasnt comfortable with the lakland, but thats just personal taste. but i think a good bass and a good amp etc. will be a better option than a great bass and an ok amp.
 12. i gotta say im coming round to the idea very slightly after reading dmanlamius' first reply. i've not noticed many of the things he says he has noticed, such as questions being unanswered and snobbery, but then, i was a member of bassworld and have been a member on here for a long time, maybe i'm used to it? i might even be one of those snobs, but i definatly try not to be. if he says he's noticed it, i dont doubt he has. i've been looking at basschat from a beginners point of view since i read this thread, and to be honest i can see how it could sort of lower your confidence being surrounded by so many talented players. i still stand by the comments i made before, but i'm seeing why you would be for it and theres a part of me that agrees.
 13.
The community spirit for whom? As a complete beginner, what contribution or engagement can I have with technical subject matter, i.e. ampage? Absolutely none and right at this point in time, it is not relevant or helpful to me as a player anyway. I am detail oriented and focussed therefore sometimes I don't want a tangential debate, I want to ask a question and get a variety of perspectives on that specific subject matter.
i agree, and thats where my second post comes in. its the term "beginners" i dont like, as a lot of information that is useful to beginners could also be useful to experienced players, and could also discourage experienced players from reading/posting on that forum.
This is quite dismissive - a wiki or a section for beginners would be a brilliant resource. It was the first thing I looked for here.
again, why just make it for beginners? if we fill in the wiki all round, useful for everyone, beginners can choose what they want as they advance. how advanced do you have to be to stop being a beginner anyway?
There are no better people to be writing reviews on beginners books, than beginners themselves. I went to a music shop recently and had a look at the vast array of books for beginner bass players. There are multitudes of "become a maestro quick" books but it is very difficult to decide which ones will get you where you want to go. Everyone has different goals when they pick up an instrument.
true, but we were all beginners once. if you asked experienced players they could reccomend books that they found useful, you just get a wider range of people to answer your questions. thats why a sticky on books for beginners seems a good ideaa to me, anyone - beginners or experienced players - can post on it without feeling slightly unwanted. i know id feel unwanted on a beginners forum because im not a beginner. another reason i dislike the term "beginners forum"
I identified another beginner (a much more advanced beginner though!) on here not long ago and we now talk every single day, comparing notes on practice techniques, progress, different tunes to learn etc. This has proved invaluable to me in terms of motivation, support/encouragement when sometimes it's not coming together, advice about various beginner resources and an avenue to direct my many questions. Otherwise I was doing a few people's heads in with constant emails and texts asking basic questions. Furthermore, I would like to think I have given something back, by explaining that I have had a few lessons and what I was taught and encouraging that person to try a few "evaluation" lessons in order to direct progress going forward.
why not say all this in a thread? you complain you cant contribute much but your practice techniques and stuff are important things, and a lot of beginners would find this useful. why not go onto the techniques section and put up a thread about practice techniques? then experienced players and beginners alike can help each other with practice techniques they used as a beginner.
The forum doesn't have to be called "beginner" if that offends people's political sensitivities. A place of learning for all, but may be particularly useful to those new to the bass, will do.
but whats the need for a different forum? we have places of learning, to me the whole of basschat is a place of learning, with seperate sections to help. you need to learn about gear? go to the gear section. theorey? technique? theres a section for those, too. i dont see the need for a "place of learning" on basschat.
 14. another thought, maybe a quick questions forum? i dont like the idea of a beginners forum, i feel itd split up the community and stop players going into that section. that way more experienced players can also use that forum to ask quick questions. and beginners will feel less embarresed asking simple questions because thats the idea of the forum. and youd simply answer the question, no going off topic or anything. someone asks a question, it gets answered, thread over. if you want to start a discussion on the subject, go to general discussion.
 15.
* Lots of questions get posed in 'General Discussion', which exposes them to the 'discursive' nature of that place. This means that the questioner may get an avalanche of seemingly 'irrelevant' answers, which, while fun for everyone else, may not necessarily help. ... * Technique (a bit of a wallflower?) could perhaps do with a sticky on 'Beginning bass playing', which also links to a 'Beginner Wiki'... * I don't see much flaming of supposedly 'stupid' questions. Where it's occurred, it's usually been jumped on, either by mods or other members. OTOH, I've seen lots of really helpful responses and offers of assistance. ... * To take a median approach, may I propose an expanded Wiki for beginners, which is very clearly signposted, to accommodate both lurkers and sign-ups. * We could first research beginners' needs (some of us will have forgotten what it's like, so we should go to the source and ask them) in order to develop an approach to handling beginners. This could also generate a list of 'beginner topics' for an expanded Wiki, to which members could offer contributions, these to be subject to sub-editing by the mods.
when i ask questions, i like it when people go off talking about other things, i then look the other things up or ask about them, and not only do i learn what i asked about, but i learn about other things too. i always find any questions get asked, and i think discouraging a "discursive" nature in the general discussion section will ruin the community spirit we have in basschat. i think a wiki aimed at beginners wouldnt work, if im honest. we havent got enough information on the wiki atm IMHO. and why cant we add anything aimed at beginners into the normal wiki? i bet a fair few people wouldnt read the beginners wiki, thinking it wouldnt hold anything of value to them (i also think the same about a beginners forum). and i dont see any flaming of people for asking stupid questions. ive asked a fair share of stupid questions in my time, and the closest to being flamed ive ever recieved is "why not google it before asking on here?" which was fair enough tbh, when i googled what i was asking i got the answer straight away. it couldve been put more nicely, but the replier made a point, and now i do google stuff before posting on here. i'm not sure if there is one, but i think there should be a forum or a sticky in the techniques section or something about available books, and maybe a sub forum or a begginers section of the sticky outlining books available for beginners. i also think maybe a sticky in the techniques section for beginners is a good idea, but i think its a bad idea to split beginners and more experienced players. i cant see why a beginner would want to identify another beginner on basschat, i cant see what use comes of that? we were all beginners once and most of us can remember what that was like. and why would you ask advice from other beginners? it makes more sense to read what more experienced players are saying, ask more experienced players and just try to surround yourself by more experienced players. you will progress much further that way.
 16. i like ashdown, too. ive only ever really used my five fifteen (which i suppose technically isnt mine now cos its sold, gonna be dropped off on friday i think) but its served me well. oh and +1 pookus on multiple effects pedals, i only ever use a little bit of distortion. i hate it when the effect is noticable, to me an effect thats been used well makes you think the bass sounds good, but doesnt immediatly draw attention to the effect itself. the only exeption is when its supposed to be really noticable, like say the bass part in hysteria. im not sure if im making sense here, i know what i mean, but its difficult to explain. but basically, unless the effect is supposed to be a main part of the song, then you shouldnt be able to notice the effect at first hearing the bass, the effect should only be noticed when you think "ooh the bass sounds good... is he using distortion (or whatever)?" i think that explains it a bit better.
 17.
There's some fin wrong with that design.
terrible. back to the self tuning thingies, i think theyd be an excellent idea if they didnt cost a stupid amount of money. theyre not worth the amount they cost, not by a long way. neither are gibsons for that matter.
 18. a ray is the only bass i really want ATM, apart from that im completely GAS free. great collection there. gotta say i didnt even notice they were in front of a fireplace until someone said about it lol.
 19. i don't understand how people prefer black/black/maple over black/black/rosewood, the rosewood looks so much cooler IMO. both great looking though. is the US more glossy? it appears to be in the photo, probably just the photo though.
 20.
Am I the only one who's spotted the big 'R' on the lower bout in every picture?
how did i manage to miss that?
 21.
3 words: Live At Leeds Another 3: Jean Jacques Burnel

This is why too many beginner instruments contain appallingly nasty active circuitry - because louder always sounds better, it's the nature of the human ear, and this is particularly apparent with lower frequencies. If you want to compare a passive bass and an active bass you have to match the levels. But if you want to sell basses to beginners it's easier to stick a cheap circuit in that boosts the output and bottom than try to educate them to the benefits of passive basses. Now I'm not saying that all active basses are bad - but even the MEC circuit in my Warwick Streamer sounded rubbish compared to bypassing it or the Aguilar OBP-3 that replaced it. Quality active onboard circuitry cannot be done cheaply though it doesn't have to be very expensive. Alex
ok, sorry, what i meant was i can only ever get them to sound bland, and that theyre quieter than my active basses so i always end up boosting the volume on my amp. ive tried and tried again with passive basses, but i cant seem to make them work for me. i dont hate other people hating passive basses, if you can get a good sound out of a bass, then use it. i just cant get one i like out of passive basses. its why i cant like jazz basss. i love the way a jazz looks, and some of my favourite bassists can make their jazzs sound great (timmy c for one) but i cant get a sound like that with a jazz no matter how hard i try. i learnt on a passive, so its nothing to do with how i learnt or what sound im used to, its just that i can only get a sound i like on an active.
 22. definatly B, As ok, but Cs just strange.
 23.
1) Active tone controls. That's what your amp's for, chaps... 2) Exotic wood basses - why do you want to play furniture? 3) Complexity - gets in the way, will be less reliable. KISS...
cant expect any more from someone who plays a telebass lol. i agree about complexity and exotic woods, but i hate passive basses - to me they always sound bland and quiet
 24. ive raved about how brilliant the ibanez is too many times before to bore everyone else with it again. but its bloody brilliant! like Lfalex v1.1 said, theyre very good (a bit of an understatement, but ill let him off) all rounders. i play punk & a bit of heavy rock, and the ibanez holds up fine. tbh, feel is as important (or maybe even more so) than sound, so i'd play em both. through similar amps to your own.
