Jakesbass, Jakesbass And Thrice Jakesbass
Tait replied to jakenewmanbass's topic in Tutors Available
Jakesbass eh? Hmmm...
If you're refering to the Vampyre thing not long ago 1) that was JakeBass, not jakesbass. 2) isn't it about time we all dropped it and gave JakeBass another chance? I mean, lets say this thread was saying JakeBass (rather than jakesbass) was a top man, theres no need to bring up something we all know happened and defeat the point of this thread. sorry to drag it up if you weren't refering to that, but i felt it needed to be said. back on topic, there are a lot of great people on here, and jakesbass is a regular poster. im happy to hear he's a nice guy face to face, not just on an internet forum, because i often wonder how different/similar people are face to face when theyre on the internet. -
im struggling to see if you can get a 4 string bass?

i had problems with just about everything i ever did on cubase, so i just gave up on using it.
+1 Norman Watt-Roy - Good call, if if you could actually remember the fella's name - Wikipedia's quite good. FYI, also played on some Clash stuff - total respect
Wikipedia also says Norman Watt-Roy was born in India, i dunno if thats true or not? and do you mean Watt-Roy played on some clash stuff? what clash stuff would that be, then? if we are counting Watt-Roy as british then, like i said in my last post, he has to be up there, just listen to rythm stick!
If he dosne't need to choke you with his beliefs then you shouldn't ever have any reason to argue. Neither is more believable, one is just more ridiculous from the offset, the other is just so self contradictory and inconsistent it is just as ridiculous in the long run.
he doesnt choke me with his beliefs, but neither does sheehan so i dont see any reason to complain. and which is which? IMO they both apply to christianity, or at least, the bible.
Having a belief is fair enough, but when its one as ridiculous as Scientology, it's just very hard to take someone as smart as he is, seriously. I find it hard to take anyone seriously if they swear by fairy tales.
if you ask me, the idea of any religion is ridiculous, yet my best friends a christian and neither of us feel the need to hold it against each other. people have their beliefs, and provided they dont try and force them upon us, its fine by me. hence, i cant see other peoples problems with billy sheehans scientology beliefs. how is a man being born of a virgin birth, turning water into wine, walking on water, etc. then coming back from the dead, not to mention being the son of a "god", who is creator of the universe, who is all knowing, all loving, all powerful, and who is everywhere yet cannot be seen, how is that more believable than scientology?

i'm struggling to see peoples problem with billy sheehans beliefs, he has the right to believe what he wants to in the same way as all of you do. i definatly dont see how it has anything to do with his playing, and thats what we're here to talk about. so back on topic - i've always though billy sheehan is one of the best bass players around, but in his own unique way. ive heard people say he's a guitarist but with four strings, but i just think that although he is very influenced by guitarists, he's not a guitarist playing bass, but just a creative bassist. to be honest that video bored me and i didnt find it that useful, even though i did watch it all the way through. but im glad to see him saying that he does what he does by ear, because at least one of the four bass teachers ive had since i began playing has had me concentrating on theorey much more than actual playing. his homework was always to work out one scale or another, or to practice in some of the stupidest time signatures ive ever seen etc. and i couldnt imagine a lot of it being useful in my real playing. to the other extent i had another bass teacher who believed that theorey was useless and limited our playing, and the best way to move forward was to play things that sounded wierd. he clearly thought it sounded good, i thought it sounded absolutely terrible. he was the only teacher ive had that it was my choice to get another teacher - all my other teachers ended up leaving and i had to get another one - because he was encouraging me to play, IMO, badly. if i played like he encouraged me to play, people would think i was just an awful bass player and kept hitting wrong notes, because he played out of key and tbh i think he probably wasnt listening to the music. a balanced mix of both is good, if you ask me. too much use of theorey and youre playing becomes zombie like. using theorey as a basis but then playing by ear to what sounds right seems to be the best idea to me, it stops your music becoming stale and boring without it sounding "wrong". and yes, music can sound wrong, IMO. if you wouldnt want to listen to it, then its wrong. thats what musics about, being enjoyable to listen to.
It's instant gratification. If you want a worn looking instrument then just play the hell out of it for 5 years or so and then it'll start to look worn with YOUR playing wear pattern, not someone else's and not one created in a workshop.
what if you want a worn looking instrument now? people buy vintage tinted necks and mint green pickguards, they do yellowed white finishes on basses because people dont want to wait for the worn effect, it takes too long.
Also bear in mind that not all finishes wear in the 'classic' Fender style. I own two Overwater Basses that are 20-25 years old and both have been played hard for most of their life and they show little wear except for the odd ding here and there.
yeah, but peoople only really want reliced fenders, because its an iconic look.
Also how would people feel about taking the perfect playing vintage bass that has suffered in it's finish and having it restored to a fresh out of the factory look?
i wouldnt care less, if thats what the owner wanted to do, thts fine by me. but you'd be stupid to do it, the price will drop considerably because its no longer all original, which is rare and therefore raises the price.
What's wrong with a relic? We all like our particular colours, shapes etc, same as LED's.....it's a matter of personal taste. If I had spare cash I'd relic both my basses. It's just like a custom paint job to me.
thats exactly what i meant by my last post, but you worded it much better.
-
if you like the look of it, why not? adding a different pickguard makes no difference, but it makes it look better. having a re-fin makes no difference, except that it looks better. are they wastes of money? i admit that a relic costs a hell of a lot more than either of those, but if you prefer the look and think its worth the extra money, then i dont have a problem. to me its exactly the same as different coloured basses or different coloured pickguards - as in that its all just about looks and makes absolutely no difference to sound or playability (although some relics try to make the neck feel more played in so you might say these relics are actually more useful than pickguards).

bruce foxton was pretty good, but admittedly not one of the best. still think he deserves a shout though.
This looks familiar... http://www.ifb.co.uk/~matthew/pics/squier_jazz/ Oh yeah, I used to own this. There are lots of pics of it at the link above (but with regular Jazz knobs instead of the silver jobs). It was in excellent nick the last time I saw it
i used to own it too, bloody nice bass it was! when i saw it for this silly price, i was sorely tempted to buy it back. i think i paid double for it.
My son (LWTAIT on here) used to own this, I think between neepheid and the OP. It has standard (unaltered) Barts fitted. Its actually a cracking bass, and £80 is silly money! The Barts and pre-amp are worth that alone!
IIRC thats right, i bought it from neepheid and sold it to mushroomcloudwarrior. -
nice to see theres a fair few people coming this time!
can you tell me whether this is likely to be during the day, or an evening fixture?
probably afternoon, it was last time.
Its actually in very good condition for its age, the photies dont do it justice! ( my crap camera work! ) Regards Will.
im not saying its in bad condition! i just meant its a bass thhats cool cos you wouldnt mind getting it all bashed up and its not all posh and shiny like say a shuker or a sadowsky. its simple and plain, and old. i like it i mean, you wouldntsee the one chrome knob or huge chunks of metal on the back of a £1000 bass. and thats what makes it cool.
